Which is "funny" cause why would a monkey write it? A monkey would not write it, that's just crazy. In before the claims of the cartoonist is calling for Obama to be shot.
even beyond the obvious racism of the thing . . .Is this something to joke about . .. sheesh . . . talk about tasteless Rocket River
1. I disagree. It isn't the cartoonists job to write down to his audience. He should be able to create without having to second guess himself every little step along the way. He can't be held responsible because the audience doesn't know the typewriter saying. If the cartoonist thinks of it that way, he should draw that way. People can think it's stupid, or bad, or tough to draw the connection, but he shouldn't have to pre-think that for them. 2. I agree with you. Also even if that hadn't just happened the cartoon would be stupid. It was stupid and lousy, but I don't think it was racist. 3. I didn't think the beheading had to do with Islam either. It is indirectly related. I think after seeing the title of the thread it is easier to look at the cartoon and instantly think of the racism angle because the idea is already on the surface. I'm not defending the cartoon as being good, but I don't believe it was racist.
Do YOU know what the monkey is referring to? I know about the Chimp who got shot. Believe me I dont correlate a shot up chimp and Obama together in any way other than tasteless humor that hints out racial undertones.
Not racist, but the intent was probably to stir up racist connotations. The cartoon is referencing the attack and this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theorem
It figures an instigator like Al Sharpton would think the monkey is Obama. What a bunch of bull! When I saw the comic, I instantly thought they were referring to the stimulus bill writers as a bunch of monkeys. Some people thought Bush and the GOP were monkeys ruining the country. Now every monkey pictorial involved with politics is apparently Obama. Al Sharpton is grasping at straws to remain relevent, now that our president is black. He can't blame it on the MAN, because the MAN is black.
Here's some more racism that is several years old Apparently, Al Sharpton believes it's ok to compare a white man to monkeys.
It didn't seem racist to me just looking at it, though you do wonder why they used cops. It is possible they needed someone with a gun, and a police officer seemed like the right person to carry a gun, or that they see the stimulus as criminal. This was a mistake by the Post, but we can't infer anything about the artist or the Post. The more racist thing is when a guy says, "Wait. Obama didn't write the Stimulus Bill."
BetterThanEver: I agree; comparing Bush to a chimp is dumb. However, you're blatantly ignoring the history of racism in this country that, maybe to your surprise, has not been directed at whites. Up until the 1960s, "monkey" was a racist term when used in regards to blacks. Can you see why? I hope so. The view that since we have a black president erases all historical precedent for racism in the US is absurd. The cartoon is stupid. It's not funny and attempts to connect too many unrelated things. But to claim ignorance of racial undertones that can easily be detected is that in itself: ignorant.
This is what's funny about being PC. Everybody wants to jump in with their opinion about why somebody else should or should not get their feelings hurt. If you don't represent that target group, just close your pie hole for a minute and listen to the people that say they were offended. Key word: Listen. If you don't care if you hurt somebody's feelings, then that's fine too. Man up and say that. Say, I don't care if black people are offended.
I am with you but there also has to be some quid pro quo. From what I read no one knew about the old saying of monkey's writing stuff. And the use of monkey as a moron was underestimated. So the ones claiming racist should also listen. by your tone and diction I can tell how much you really care about not offending anyone so I am sure my post will be taken seriously.
Has somebody ever pissed you off and told you that you were overracting or worse, said you were being a baby (or whatever). How did you take that? Monkey's have a LLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGG history of being associated as a racist icon. LLLLOOONNNNGGG. Hundreds of years LONG. That won't be erased anytime soon. It's just a simple fact. Not worth disputing. It is a PERFECTLY predictable and a reasonable response for people to be offended by the use of a monkey in the context of Obama. If you don't care that people are offended, fine. But you are not really in any position to tell people how they should feel. If they say they are offended ...just say ok and leave it at that. Nothing pisses me off more when I get offended about something and somebody else tells me to stop whinning. So telling people to stop whinning isn't the solution. The solution is just respect people's wishes and stop portraying black people as monkey's ...unless of course you don't care.
I thought most of the guys that wrote the bill were white. We could include Olympia Snow as a minority since she is a woman.
