just because you didn't doesn't mean other people won't. I wouldn't have thought of a monkey on a typewriter. when discussing these issues you shouldn't just apply what you would think.
Well who has a problem then? Me who instantly think of probability class or the people who see a monkey and scream racist? At some point there is "cried wolf" problem with this stuff and real racial issues get overlooked.
I don't believe the cartoon in any way is racist, or was referencing Obama as a chimp. It was stupid, but not racist.
yes, people scream racist everytime they see a monkey ----> your being obtuse just tells me you understand why some might react that way
I agree and a lot of times it is annoying, but in this case I can see how it can be seen as that. FranchiseBlade- I think I agree with you. The person may or may not have intended anything malicious, but he does have a viable out. So I'd probably go with stupid over racist, but I don't know the artist. Like I said, I don't think the picture is funny enough to deal with potential headaches. Its like a joke where you have to explain the punchline.
That's my thought as well. I looked at the cartoon and didn't really get it. I didn't think Obama, but I didn't think monkey-on-a-typewriter either. Maybe it would have worked better had there been a typewriter in the background or something like that, but I don't think the first thing people associate monkeys with is typewriters. All around, just a badly done cartoon.
here's more. the chimp was shot by the police, which the cartoon is pretty obviously referencing. [rquoter]With a friend clinging to life after her pet chimpanzee mauled her, Sandra Herold tearfully told My Fox NY, "It's just been hell. There's no other way to explain it." Herold, a Stamford CT resident, tried to stop Travis the 200-poung chimp from attacking her friend Charla Nash by hitting him with a shovel and even stabbing him, but it wasn't until the police arrived and fatally shot the animal that Travis stopped. Herold was in shock, "He didn't have anything but love until this freak accident." She told the Post, "It was very difficult to do this, but I had to save my friend. I am so sorry for what happened to Charlie. She is my dear friend." Herold had called Nash for some help because Travis was acting out—Herold had tried giving him Xanax in some tea, but he refused to drink it. When Nash arrived (with an Elmo doll to calm him down, the Daily News reports), Travis immediately charged at her. In the 911 call, Herold hysterically tells the dispatcher that Travis "tore off" Nash's face: Herold also tells the dispatcher that the police need to shoot the chimp: "My chimpanzee! He ripped her apart! Shoot him, shoot him!" The dispatcher stays on the line and tries to comfort Herold after the gunshots. She said, "I don't blame the cop for what he did. It's a tragedy on both sides." Nash is in critical condition, with severe injuries to her face and hands. Herold, 70, may face criminal charges; the AP says, "A pet owner can be held criminally responsible if he or she knew or should have known that an animal was a danger to others." While some animal experts are "baffled" by the attack, Nightline (video) had a segment about other pet chimps who grew up and attacked their owners (one would let a chimp groom her hair and mouth—until the day he pulled out a tooth, root and all).[/rquoter]
That was all in the original article - no one questions that. The question is what on earth it has to do with the stimulus package.
yes, yes, we all know about the chimp attack. the word "stimulus package" in the cartoon and the depiction of a monkey being shot suggest that this joke is on Obama. but it's not, it's on the monkeys who sit at typewriters making stimulus packages.
If the cartoon had contained multiple monkeys it would make sense that that monkeys on a typewriter is what they intended the audience to picture. Using one doesn't make that an obvious connection.

Are you asking if I really think the vid I posted was racist? No I am being obtuse. However I really do not understand why people cannot see how the monkey is a symbol of incompetence and not of a black man
there in lies why some think its racist. sharpton is old, he's seen a lot of racism in his time, when he was young a common racial degregation was to compare blacks to monkeys, to say blacks were like monkeys, therefore, incompetent, or stupid. so fast foward to 2009, our new first black president has a stimulus plan linked to him, first and foremost to him before the congressional democrats. there is the connection that sharpton sees, I know you don't need this explained in detail but there it is written out.
