Different scenario. CP3 was not on a rookie scale contract and would "only" be forfeiting his fifth year and larger annual raises had he left New Orleans as an unrestricted free agent.

In Love's situation (being on a rookie scale contract), he can still get the "30% max" with Minnesota as opposed to a "25% max" with any other team. And that's AFTER he waits a year playing under his qualifying offer.

Bottom line: Kevin Love would lose out on a LOT more money than CP3 would in their respective situations.

You may be right about what the Rockets would do, but using T-Mac is a bad example.

Much like CP3 last month, T-Mac only had one year left on his deal and was threatening to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent. Les Alexander made T-Mac signing an extension a PREREQUISITE for trading his two best players (Francis and Mobley) in exchange for him.

No way was Les going to do that for a one-year rental.

They need to keep him, he's there only legit big man and he is a rebounding machine.

That being said, it's important they learn from their mistakes with Garnett. Don't tie up all your money with Love, otherwise you won't have enough to bring in surronding talent (veterans would go to Minnesota if they were winning and Minnesota compensated the lack of a nightlife with more money) or in this case, keep Rubio and Williams together.

What if they have two choices, max Love out or lose him? What would you decide?

I think, just for PR, you have to max out. The Twolves have been in a constant state of losing for a while now, I think losing Love and starting yet another rebuilding era will kill the franchise. I think in the situation you described they max him out, and try to build a somewhat competitive team around him.

Just for PR? For basketball reasons, the T-Wolves must re-sign Kevin Love long-term because they are trash without him.

Well, in terms of building the next championship, giving Love a max contract and building around him isn't going to cut it, unless they try to build a solid team ala '04 Pistons.

But, if we're just talking about competing and not truly contending, then yes- signing Love is a solid basketball decision.

Kevin Love is 23 years old and is currently 2nd in the NBA in PER, after finishing 4th last year.

You can win a title with Kevin Love as your best player.

If the T-Wolves re-sign Love, they probably won't win a championship (for various reasons). If they let Love go, any talk of a championship this decade is complete nonsense.

The only way they have a chance to sniff the NBA Finals is with Kevin Love (at a max contract).

I wonder though, if Minnesota can bring in a young center- no one special, maybe like an Oakley guy to just get boards or play D- and if they can dump Beasley and build around Rubio, Williams, and Love, just how good they can become. I don't think they could beat the Thunder, Bulls, or Heat- but maybe they can be like the Grizzlies, and be that scary cinderella who no one wants to face in the 1st round.

They need to add a dynamic/athletic perimeter scorer at SG, hope Rubio becomes all-world, hope Derek Williams develops into a very good full-time SF and get a serviceable C that can defend the paint (to help make up for Love). Add some seasoned veteran reserves and maybe contend in 2-3 seasons. There should be some good lottery picks in the coming draft.

Minnesota would be at the top of the lottery selections every year without K-Love.

    Oh wait...

I don't think so... And I don't think PER is a good measure for determining a player's greatness. Kevin Love has a much higher PER than Dirk, but he is LIGHT YEARS away from the player that Dirk is now. I am highly doubtful that Kevin Love will ever be able to close games...

No rim protection, very little post game to close out a game...

(If any team can do it though, it would be an Adelman coached Princeton one...)

love puts up amazing numbers, the question is do these number help you win, i realise the team around him is tripe but who was the last player to average 20 and 15 on a 17 win team....

have watched a few twolves games so far this season on league pass, they are fun to watch, and love is extremely good at getting to the line when the game is tight, but the question is, who is their go to guy when the game is on the line in the last 5 minutes, one game i saw it was Beasely, really it love is a superstar and max player he has to be able to score with the game on the line...

nevertheless you have offer him the extension, you wonder what it would take to trade for him
