You know, I actually don't even call BS, I wouldn't be surprised if a flunky from James' (or James' agent's) ensemble probably did speculate out loud about that to Peter Vecsey - and Vecsey ran with it. After all if it doesn't come true -- in 2012 -- who the hell is going to remember?

If he leaves after his 2nd contract that would be 2011. Would he be able to sign a 1 year extension and then leave in 2012? Or would he have to sign a new contract for a year since his 2nd contract would be maxed at 5 years already?

I am quite willing to opt out of my Houston gig right now and go play for Zeke. I am 5' 6 1/2" tall, weigh 265 so I can play small power forward, and figure I can back up all five positions, and will play for the rookie minimum - guaranteed though - cause rent is high in NYC. It would also be nice if the Knicks could get me a season pass for a taxi. :D And this is no rumor!

This is exactly what I thought. He signed a 3-year contract extension, with a player option for the 4th year, which means he would be a free agent in 2010, but where did the 2012 come from?

LeBron has a player option the last year. It's up to him whether he leaves after the 3rd or 4th year.

actually its not to early, NY knicks are in such bad shape, that it will take them five years to clear cap space for lebron, so actually the knicks do need to start working on that NOW ,so it doesnt surprise me....plus, if your lebron, your thinking "hey, im giving cleveland another five years to get me in the championship if they cant build a team then im leaving"...so yeah, lebron might already made up his mind that in five years its a big market, either LA or NY or CHitown...

For the last 10 years there has been some rumor coming out of NY about some superstar opting out for the Knicks. What has this yeilded? Overpriced garbage like Strawberry. You can almost blame their current cap/roster problems on their deperate search for a superstar.

It's rumors like these that remind the rest of the Sports world that NY still has an NBA franchise.

I wouldn't be suprised if/when LeBron leaves Cleveland. As much as I dislike the Knicks and Lakers, they are still HUGE markets that Lebron, the NBA, Nike, Gatorade, etc...would greatly profit from.

IIRC, Lebron has a clause in his contract with Nike that would pay him even more if he joined the Knicks or Lakers.

hes not going to chicago for sure....small chance he'll go to LA . Its pretty obvious hes going to New York. I dont blame him at all...he can surpass Jordan on and off the court if he goes to New York

You actually think this article is true? It makes some sense, but

    1.) Peter Vecsey wrote it
2.) It attempts to project the future 6 years in advance
3.) It even has the year of the expiration of Lebron's current contract wrong

Isn't his opt out in 2011, so shouldn't he be opting out in 2010 or 2011 to join the Knicks? 3 years from now is 2010 and 4 years from now is 2011. Wouldn't 2012 mean he is staying for the full contract term?

I'm not sure, but I don't think that the CBA can govern shoe-contracts at all. The CBA is a contract between the players union and the league. Shoe contracts are between the individual player and an athletic company. I think it is unlikely that LBJ has it directly written into his contract that it would double if he changed markets. It is possible that they have some handshake agreement to renegotiate if that happens.

My prediction: LBJ to the Knicks will never happen. Carmelo will end up the face of the Brooklyn Nets.

Oh yea, I just from a very very very high level source that LBJ is going to sign with the Shanghai Sharks in 2012. :D
