If the Rockets could add another 1st rounder for as cheap as $3M, then they should do it.

This draft has a lot of talent, a lot of college guys who were with winning programs and could probably help teams out quickly.

    #19- CJ Miles
    #24- Wayne Simien

If it were available to Rox I'd prefer swapping draft places and paying a pittance.

    How about we trade:

Wesley and our TE to Memphis for J. Williams and their first?

They get rid of their problem child and another gurranteed contract, we get a PG and a young player.

    (i know, impossible)

    :D

Since a 1st rounder is guaranteed a contract, would that count against our MLE we already have?

Also, what is the procedure of high school players and early entry players pulling their names from the list?

Do they have to pull their names before the draft, if so, when is the deadline?

but if we traded 19 and 24 for a late lotto player such as Danny Granger, I'm sure he'd probably start.

TE can't be aggregated. Doesn't work capwise (though with some manuevering, it does). Weatherspoon for Williams would work for example. (thanks f4p :))

GATER- Sure. The difference being Memphis could look at a pure cash swap as a team paying them to keep Jake on their roster whereas if they trade Jake, they theoretically have to replace him. Though, trading Jake would be an even sweeter deal because he represents nearly 6 million in committed salary over the next 2 years.

1.) No. They count against you if you're under the cap, but for capped out teams, you get a special "exception" to sign your draft pick to his slotted salary. Paying more first rounders may deter us from using our MLE however.

2./3.) They do have to pull their names before the draft. The deadline to declare has passed, but the deadline for an early entry to pull his name is June 21- a week before the June 28 draft.
    -----------------------------
xiki- The point is, the Grizz don't want a first rounder. They're not talking about moving down, they want to move out.
    -----------------------------

I just don't understand why people see this as a big deal. Personally, I wouldn't do it. Orlando sold the #13 overall, and basically gave away the #10 that same year (along with Maggette). , based on forcing the Clips to also take Derek Strong. The Suns gave up the #7, which became Luol Deng for a future first because they wanted to get rid of it. This is the #19- certainly wouldn't pay the max 3 mill.

Edit: the nice thing from this article is if teams aren't willing to "buy" a pick like the article suggests, that means teams are being a little more financially wary. This bodes well for potentially landing talent for our expiring contracts.

    true. and with our mle.

i wonder what the value of expiring contracts will be if the new cba limits contracts to 4 years. all of a sudden, you can get out of a problem contract in no time (it usually takes 2 or so years of sucking before a contract really starts to be seen as bad) so you don't need the expiring ones as badly to help you outta trouble. however, with so much of your roster overturned all the time, teams would have chances at huge cap space much more often than now and would love expiring contracts to help them get even further under. maybe it'll just be a push between these two factors.

well...I was actually only asking for my own information...cause you know how many misconceptions there are about legal uses of the TEs

It was mentioned early...somehow or another I took it as being discussed in conjunction with getting the pick....

    Duece,
Thanks for that idea. That is the first thing I've read on this site that has me a little excited. I think we could turn one of two first round picks into something special if we make getting solid, researched picks our focus. Look at what Dallas has with Josh Howard? We can get talent with these picks.

People seem to only focus on the negative with late 1sts (20+), yeah some guys like Gaines have bad deals. But you also have guys like Josh Howard, Nelson and Prince who is locked away ultra cheap (1-1.4 mil year) for multiple years and then is resticted when he does hits free agency with a full right to match any offer--giving his current team lots of power.

    Look at 20+ 1st rounders

    2004
    Jameer Nelson
    Pavel Podkolzine
    Viktor Khryapa
    Sergei Monia
    Delonte West
    Tony Allen
    Kevin Martin
    Sasha Vujacic
    Beno Udrih

    2003
    Dahntay Jones
    Boris Diaw
    Zoran Planinic
    Travis Outlaw
    Brian Cook
    Carlos Delfino
    Ndudi Ebi
    Kendrick Perkins
    Leandrinho Barbosa
    Josh Howard

    2002
    Kareem Rush
    Qyntel Woods
    Casey Jacobsen
    Tayshaun Prince
    Nenad Krstic
    Frank Williams
    John Salmons
    Chris Jefferies
    Dan Dickau

    2001
    Brendan Haywood
    Joseph Forte
    Jeryl Sasser
    Brandon Armstrong
    Raul Lopez
    Gerald Wallace
    Samuel Dalembert
    Jamaal Tinsley
    Tony Parker

Overall there were many excellent values. I would gladly take Memphis's pick off their hands, plus I think this draft looks pretty good in the 20s, including possible servicable back-up PFs.

this is a good draft to have a late first-round pick. Sign me up for buying the Grizz pick.
