Seriously doubt it all you want. It doesn't mean it can't happen in the future. That line of thinking is what the problem is. You give up more and more freedoms and the next hing you know you are serving time for a Twinkie.

They want to ban smoking in houses/ backyards. They already want to ban smoking in houses with children. Then it will be smoking in homes all together. Then it will be for certain foods in your house. It will happen. This is the road we are going down.

If it is harmful then why not is my point? Are you pro second hand smoke for kids? :p Smoking is different because if one person does it, it has a negative health effect on the people enhailing it around them....Would shot give a child a drink of wiskey (I hope not), then why your 2nd hand smoke?

He isn't saying that these things aren't bad for us. He is saying that it would set precedent for the government to start banning all kinds of things that it deems unnecessary, dangerous, or anything else they feel like they should ban for any reason. That is much more dangerous, in many peoples' opinion, than second-hand smoke or trans-fats.

I agree the slipperly slope is in effect.

That said, smoking and trans fats are different. Nobody is saying you can't eat french fries. Eat them all you want. Just don't let restaurants poison us with an artificial ingredient that provides no benefit to the consumer. Trans fats were invented to help shelf life of their product ...not to make things taste better.

Smoking is done because the person wants to.

Ban trans fats and you can still eat french fries.

Ban smoking and you can't smoke.

    See the difference?

Nope. If a restaurant want to sell fried Twinkies they should be allowed to do so.

transfats are cheating. i love fat it tastes good, but use the real thing. i would do with a compromise, labeling menu items that contain them. i'm for slow foods for sooooo many reasons. http://www.slowfood.com/
i don't really get your opposition to this.

Fine, just change the oils and there you go, you can sell fried Twinkies. This is what a government is for, to protect the people. Companies will not change the oils unless the feel enormous pressure from either the public or the goverment.

Or people don't buy them...except when they are free to do so. It's called a choice, rather than the police raid your house for crisco.

Why the hell does it matter if the other stuff taste the same, just isn't as bad for you? Geez, the government is doing us a freaking favor for once and you idiots don't seem to realize that this is a very good thing.

The taste is the same, all we at talking about is switching one type of fat/oil for another that isn't near as harmful.

Trans fat is a an artifical fat made by man. This isn't the first time we've made an artificial food, found out it wasn't good for us and removed it from the market.

No, it's not banning food, it's banning oils that are used to make food.
