It was always going to be a bad deal for Denver. What a horrible signing.

Straight Robbery. He should wear a ski mask to the arena every night. I knew this MPJ train was going to crash. People were just straight delusional regarding this kid and boy are the Nuggets going to regret it.

Good deal for this young man, doubt he ever returns to form and his career likely cut short. I think for all these big contracts we need a certain guaranteed amount or transfer fee that teams trading for those players have to pay and then re-negotiate and agree on salary terms.

So 5 years 172 million, let’s say 150 is the guaranteed and 22 incentives bonus etc. Of that 150, in case of a trade or acquisition, 50 is guaranteed and the rest has to be determined. I don’t know how that would work with salary caps and such, but something needs to change, especially if players refuse to play / demand trades etc.

A lot of Clutchfans were on the MPJ hype wagon and wanted us to trade for him. So glad we didn't - guy is like Mr Glass but if Mr Glass wasn't trying that hard to be a bad guy.

How long before we see a return of the amnesty clause? Dude gets a career ending/altering injury, he simply gets paid but his contract doesn't count against the cap.

Smart teams draft MPJ at 14, dumb teams proceed to give him the max.

MPJ looked extremely good last year when he was healthy. He appeared to be the rare player that could score at a very high level without dominating the ball or being a ball handler - and doing it while efficient. There are very few of those type of players.... Durant, Nowitzki and Bird come to mind.

At 22 years last year he shot 45% from three on a high volume. He showed the ability to score all over the court and even crash the boards and block shots.

They claim that he will recover 100% from this and his back is very young, so that helps his prognosis quite a bit.... but two back surgeries by 24 years old? That really doesn't sound good. Maybe they can get 6-7 years out of him like the Celtics did with Bird after his initial back issues... but Barkley and Howard also never were the same.

Back surgery is generally the riskiest and least successful of any major skeletal / orthopedic surgeries

About 10 years ago I was having major sciatic issues in my lower back to the point I had to stand up at my work desk and pull over to take breaks during my commute home

I saw a dozen specialists and nothing was working, to the point I was seriously considering surgery
Back then, the consensus was that my type of lower back procedure had less than a 40% chance of helping at all, and required 4-6 month recovery

Luckily, I found an amazing Chiropractor who fixed me without any surgery and has kept my back in good shape for over 10 years now

Generally, surgery is ALWAYS the very last option when it comes to back problems
Very risky, highly ineffective, and rehab is torture

This is generally true but I would add that age and genetics and lifestyle all are major factors. For example, older overweight smokers are terrible candidates. In this case we have someone very young, genetically gifted and likely has a solid lifestyle. The type of procedure also really matters as well and the condition of the spine...... the only real optimism I would have as a Nuggets fan is that the Nuggets had his back films before they extended him and if they were THAT bad, I doubt they extend him. Having said that.... this is a second procedure and Porter has to return at 95% of what he was before to consider the surgery a success.... either way, I wouldn't want to be Porter in 30 years, because he will likely have some back issues, and back pain is terrible.

Probably had a discectomy for a herniated disk
Really not that big of a deal
Will have to see how he heals though

The thing is nobody was chomping at the bit to offer MPJ that max deal so it was a dumb move.

I think sometimes GMs just fall in love with their own players. Like Stone offering Nwaba that 5M deal, just like MPJ it made 0 sense as nobody was offering close to that amount.

You are also right. Someone very young, genetically....

The thing is though he would perhaps do fine after surgery have a great life etc without pain. He doesnt lead a normal life though he is in the NBA.

He will be fine. If not, Insurance will cover his contract and the owners will make more money than ever.

I wonder if insurances even insured that contract based on missing time for back issues knowing that he has had two back surgeries already.

The Nuggets were warned not to draft him because of his BAD BACK. You could see at the end of the playoffs he was in pain and the last two games in the playoffs he did not play well. Poor JOKIC...
