Obama isn't the laughing stock of the entire planet like Trump. 33% approval in America, way less than that globally. Trump is a fake tough guy, lots of big talk, but weak actions. Only the most gullible and susceptible to be taken advantaged of buy his rhetoric.

His statement today about fury fits in perfectly with what NK is trying to do, make Trump and the USA look like a bunch of idiots and increase KJU's support in NK. They already made another threat to the USA. So now Trump is either going to take the public humiliation OR he can start a WW3 by directly causing the deaths of millions of civilians. He's either an idiot, or a straight up murderer and worst leader in history.

Everybody knows that the way to deal with NK is to ignore them, they aren't going to attack first because it means that they will get demolished and lose all their power in NK.

you're right. ISIS and Iran loved Obama.

Hell no you don't ignore a crazy person who will have the capabilities to strike the US. I mean if they say they're going to nuke the US that's one thing but if they actually have the ability to then you have to act as the president.

And I like how you're so sure that NK won't strike. If you were alive in 1940 you would probably say no way Japan will attack pearl harbor. Yeah, how did that work out?

Pretty positive that the US has a robust missile defense system that will knock any nuke fired at the US out of the sky. And if NK fired one at us it would be their death sentence.

RussianLegend in here posting a breathless defense of looney Trump after he threatens nuclear war, tries to paint liberals as North Korean apologists. How predictable.

Four pages of debate today and not one mention of why we haven't simply "taken out" the Kim regime over the last 60 years. North Korea is a domino that sits between the death of tens of millions of people in Seoul and Japan, tens of millions of refugees pouring into China, the most expensive and costly reunification effort in modern history and the presumption of American troops on China's border (which they really don't want). Make no mistake, North Korea would lose a war. But they would take out Seoul and western Japan with them, not to mention fallout over Manchuria if nuclear weapons were used.

Clinton, Bush and Obama all failed on North Korea, but there was never going to be an easy answer. At the very least, DPRK is a rational actor unmotivated by supernatural belief. They care about self-preservation which is why many experts think they'd never use a nuclear weapon.

I'm sure we'd be greeted as liberators in Pyongyang, too.

Don't you think if this was the case, some of the military men surrounding him would say something?

North Korea crisis has been building for decades now. It has come to a head mostly because of the leaps in missile and warhead technology advances they have made in the past 6 months to 1 year. Trump has ZERO to do with that.

I know you hate the guy but not every problem is of his making.

So, is the ball on Trump's court? He promised fire and fury if Nokor made another threat. Instantly, Nokor threatened Guam.

I am sure Trump is working closely with his Ambassador to South Korea and his Assistant Secretary for Eastern Asian Affairs. What, he hasn't nominated anyone for those positions yet?

If it was the case that Trump wanted a war for personal reason, how would military men surrounding him know that intent? He would tell them that? Perhaps, but that's not at all a given. And if he doesn't, they would have to pick up on clues and take a guess at their command-in-chief intent and act against it for the benefit of the US - a dangerous assumption game that military men wouldn't likely cross.

his military and political men are busy thinking of ways to deescalate while saving face (a very necessary requirement for Trump); at least i hope so

Tilllerson appeared to have tried to diffuse the situation earlier and teed up discussions ("We are not your enemy ... but you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond. And we hope that at some point they will begin to understand that and we would like to sit and have a dialogue with them.") but the latest escalation happened while Tillerson was in Guam. Tillerson still seems to push diplomacy and is now trying to calm the situation ("I do not believe that there is any imminent threat' from North Korea; `Americans should sleep well at night"). But ultimately he, Mattis, and Kelly still ultimately report to the mad man.

I share your hopes that Kelly can distract Trump with a new folder with news video of Trump looking strong while Mattis and Tillerson can work out an out.
