In what regards? I think he’s the best wing defender on the market right now. Melton is arguably as good as a guard defender but is seriously struggling with injuries
Opt out of Landale's contract, keep Cam, use the MLE to sign DFS, extend Bari and Tari to extensions that keep us out of the first apron next year. Next two years of: FVV / Amen / KD / Smith / Sengun Sheppard / Cam / Eason / DFS / Adams
Name them? Also keep in mind KD is probably gonna miss 20 games or so. DFS could be a good insurance.
I like DFS, but he will not fit this team. We need another another dynamic guard in the backcourt that can either be a 6th man or a starter at SG. Combo duties is a must so we can avoid FVV playing an ungodly amount of minutes if Reed doesn't work out.
Defender? Can he shoot? Can he create? Those are what we are missing creation and shooting....not defense... DD
He’s not a good defender. He’s a complete liability who is targeted It’s like saying Jae’Sean Tate, also a good shooter in comparison to Ty Jerome lol He shot 41% on a good volume of 3’s. No he can’t create, complete offball player catch and shoot, hustle guy on O. Like it or not defense is our culture and what we built our success on, Ime might not want to give up and inch on that end, and feel content with KD and further development from Amen/Smith/Reed on offense.
I believe we need to give Sheppard all the chances possible to grow into the role over the next couple of season. With FVV, Amen, Sheppard, and Holiday as primary ball handlers, along with secondary ball handlers like KD, Sengun, and Cam, I think we'll be fine as a team. I feel like if we sign a high-level vet backup guard, Ime will be tempted to use him over Sheppard. We need to see what we have in Sheppard. A guy like DFS, on the other hand, would be excellent KD insurance if/when KD misses games.
Gary Trent Jr. played along FVV in Toronto. Curious if that is a positive relationship. He’d be a good fit as a scorer off the bench who could play alongside Amen or FVV in a pinch.
Reed development (jump?) during his second year will be one of the key storylines of the season. If he's a significant contributor, another win for the FO but if no progress, still bouncing to G-league/etc., a wasted 3rd pick.
I’d be ok with DFS, but it’s like he has sparkled on offense throughout his career and it looks like he wants close to 20m. We need long guys that can shoot and play team defense at the NT-MLE or below. The rockets don’t want to broach the first apron. I’m not even sure they are wanting to pay luxury tax. Once they signed FVV, the writings on the wall. We are going to go for player(s) for no more than 14.1.
He’s a little more interesting than guys like Hardaway / Beasley / Kennard because from what I’ve read, and remember, he’s actually decently athletic and sturdy, he has the tools to be a solid defender, and was at times earlier in his career, but has motivational and poor decision making problems that make him a negative defender. Might be a guy that, if Ime could motivate/guide on that end, would fit great. Same could be said for Whitmore though… We are not offering anybody 20 million, we likely can only make an AVV offer of 12-13 million per or so over 4 years, a good chunk less than a full MLE. We may not be able to afford him, but your argument was seemingly that there are better players than him - for the money we have to offer.
