Nope. Granted, the userbases somewhat skew things, but PS3 game sales seem to be to be pretty poor (at least relative to the 360). Kind of bothers me that games like R2, LBP, MGS4, etc., aren't on those lists. Sales seem to be better in other regions from time to time, at least from what I could tell. Speaking of which, since these are the last of 2008 sales, I think I'll try to post some sales from Europe (or possibly only UK) and Japan later on.
UK Hardware: 2008 PSP - 0.6m PS3 - 1.0m 360 - 1.4m Wii - 2.9m DS - 3.4m LTD PS3 - 1.9m 360 - 3.2m PSP - 3.2m Wii - 4.9m DS - 8.8m European/PAL numbers as a whole seem a little harder to pinpoint, but I believe it is basically (LTD): DS 31M Wii 14.2M 360 8M+ PS3 7M+? Didn't get any specific Sony numbers (360 was at 8M+, ~1M more than PS3), so no PSP/PS2 numbers (unless I do some more searching). Japan (YTD/LTD) NDS 4,177,267 | 25,350,321 PSP 3,850,175 | 11,515,252 WII 2,982,727 | 7,598,866 PS3 1,041,406 | 2,683,082 360 341,789 | 850,234 PS2 485,032 | 21,412,072 Don't really have software numbers, especially from Europe. I can post the latest weekly Japanese sales, which include some LTD numbers for Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, GT5P, White Knight Chronicles, Final Fantasy Dissidia, etc. Also, the PS2 hit the 50M mark in the US.
Got some more numbers (mostly LTD)... http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21937 According to this, MGS4 is at ~1M in the US (not counting bundles), and both LBP and R2 are at ~600K. Not quite as bad as I was thinking, although still far off from similar games on the 360 (L4D sold 600K+ in December alone). LBP sales were somewhat consistent (December sales were bigger than October sales actually), so hopefully is has some long legs in the US (already has long legs in the UK/Europe). More details at the link, including sales for PoP and Tomb Raider (483K and 246K). There was a top 20 list for December, as well as a top 10 list for each console (also during December). Thanks to various details on games, sales for some of the games on the rankings can be estimated. Here are those lists (credit to botticus and others at NeoGAF for calculating these numbers): (long list, so spoiler tagged) Spoiler Top 20 Games of December 2008 1. It is usually hard to get nice software numbers.
how many people are buying the PS3 as a bluray player? I know people with both 360/PS3 and the PS3 is mainly used for the DVD/Bluray entertainment. Now that they have decent bluray players in the $200-$300 range, did that decrease the sales of the PS3 as the #1 'affordable' bluray option? I was talking to some dude at CES and he told me the difference between his Sony ES Bluray player ($1000) to a PS3 or any other. its all products of scale, if you have a home theater room with super expensive and high end audio, you get the $1000 bluray player to get the most out of the advanced sound processing.
Kind of tough to say for sure. This definitely has been a factor, although we don't know to what degree. It certainly would account for the "lower-than-expected" sales of PS3 games compared to the 360, although I do think that in general, PS3 gamers do not buy as many games as 360 gamers. Nor do they seem to gravitate to the big name games as much. At least in the US (gamers in Europe and Japan have different "behavior" of course). Sales didn't really decrease (at least, not in an unusual way) these last few months IIRC, but that was due to the holiday boom (or possibly leftover MGS4/PS2 BC momentum in earlier months). Sales could have been higher though. For example, the PS3 sold much better in 2008 than in 2007, but it sold better in Dec 2007 than it did in Dec 2008. Perhaps Dec 07 through parts of 08 were influenced strongly by Blu-ray?
At what point do software companies further feed the PS3's decline by making fewer games for the system? Is everyone assuming that Sony will eventually cut the price low enough to make PS3 sales explode?
I think I pointed this out in the other thread, but even at these sales, there's no point in killing PS3 support IMO, at least for most games (certain exceptions may apply). I believe in general, sales are like 65-35 between the 360 and PS3 versions of multiplatform games (EX: ~650K for 360, ~350K for PS3, adding up to 1M total). With the increasing costs to make games, the 360 version of a game would not result in a profit. And even if it does, a PS3 version would likely add a nice amount of money to that profit. Given how much work most developers have already spent on multiplatform engines and tools, it seems pointless not to release PS3 games given the cost. This is partly why we have so many games on both consoles. All that's assuming these current ratios. The PS3 may cut into that ratio over time, and of course, some games will not result in the same ratio (as mentioned in the link, Prince of Persia was 50-50). Additionally, these are only referring to US sales. Sales in Japan and possibly Europe would favor the PS3, and depending on the game, this can mean a world of difference (EX: MGS4 could have sold 700K/300K in the US, but then maybe 200K/500K in Japan and 300K/400K in Europe...assuming it was 360/PS3). Home could have an influence too, although that might be too early to predict. The worldwide ratio would have to be really bad for the PS3 for publishers to start dropping it I think. If anything, I think publishers might make more 360 exclusives multiplatform rather than dropping PS3 support....if that is even possible. I am interested to see how KZ2 affects sales. Given past PS3 games, I certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to expect crazy sales. That said, it probably is the 2nd best known PS3 game, next to MGS4. MGS4-esque numbers would be nice for sure...of course, that would apply to virtually any game. SFIV, RE5, and a few other games should help as well, although they'll likely be helping sales for both the 360 and PS3.
Me too. Ive logged 8hrs max on my Wii since owning near launch. I guess I should have given Mario Galaxy a shot but meh.
Gotcha, but if publishers increase the number 360 exclusive games, that could be problematic. I guess your point is the global ratios are high enough that the PS3 is worth it for publishers and the ratios will likely improve as time goes by.
You know why the Wii is so Hot 1. Young kids ( population is ever growing ) 2. Old Folks 3. Adult fun factor on a level they can understand and the ultimate why Zelda Twilight princess Hack ( Look it up on google, youtube )
Why would they do that? As I tried pointing out, they'd likely prefer to release on both platforms rather than just the 360. Of course, I'm assuming that Microsoft wouldn't be involved in any of these decisions. That could certainly change things... To further illustrate my point, in December, COD:WaW sold 1.33M on the 360 and 533K on the PS3. This is actually beyond the 66-33 split, around 70-30 if I did my math right. If they made $20 per PS3 copy sold (pretty conservative IIRC, think it might be closer to $30), then they made ~$10M by creating a PS3 version. Granted, they're making more than twice that with the 360 version, but it would probably be hard to turn down an extra $10M*. And again, these are strictly US sales. Of course, I suppose it is possible that a portion of the 533K that bought COD for the PS3 might have bought it for the 360 had a PS3 version not existed. IOW, creating the PS3 version may not have increased overall sales much, if at all...it may have just split them. But it is hard to prove this, let alone predict it. Sort of. US ratios are high enough for it to be worth it for publishers from what I can tell. I just threw in some global ratios to show how, in some instances, multiplatform games sell better on the PS3 than the 360 (or the same in some cases). It would certainly be foolish to stop supporting the PS3 in that case. Suppose there could be some cases where a game sells something like 80-20 in the US, but maybe 70-30 or 60-40 around the world...although I don't think that has come close to happening. Maybe with really late ports or something (Oblivion, BioShock, etc.).
I just bought one 2 weeks ago for the blueray.. I figured for a decent (average) blueray player is around $250 so paying $316 for a PS3 was a no brainer.. Now I have all 3 systems which I can't believe. I have to admit though the 360 online capabilities run rings around the PS3.. I mean downloading demos, games on the 360 vs PS3 is night and day. Also Lag on Street Figher HD is a lot more noticeable on the PS3 than on the 360 (Yes I bought SFHD for both systems (Different friends)).. But man BlueRay looks so nice on my 46" 1080P Sharp
OK. Just send me $12K and I'll see what I can do. Or was it more than $12k for software...I forget. Send me $24K just to be on the safe side. I remember the good old days when we did get complete lists ("illegally" of course). Seeing what FF7 sold in March 2004 was pretty cool.
