I don't agree with that (I think Resistance is a league above COD4, at least in SP), although we don't necessarily have to get into that. It is certainly a quality game, and one that has been pushed for 13+ months as the PS3's killer app (and rightfully so). Yet a multiplatform game outsold it (by ~200K IIRC) in less than 2 months. Those are only numbers from Japan and the US since it is hard to get good numbers from the rest of the world (mostly Europe). But all reports pretty much have the Wii doing really well in those places for the most part (and the 360 doing not so well), so it wouldn't change anything but the numbers. Yeah, I think there was some news about it a while back when the estimates put the Wii on top. The Wii's global success really helped it out (it sold on par with the 360 or better in the US, it sold much better in Europe/Japan/etc.).
it would seem the 'finish' here in NA is pretty much set, as far as 1st, 2nd and 3rd go. I really don't see that changing much, at least untill maybe HD movies become the standard, but that may be pretty far down the line. Which really doesn't 'mean' much, if ps3 stays in '3rd' it'll still get good games and just retool for the next round. It just probably won't get the software support the ps2 got.
you're right, it was pushed as a killer app. the problem is it isn't. i'm sure we're going to see a lot of things they wanted to do in r1 but couldn't due to the time constraints of a launch title + programming for new hardware. resistance 2 might be a killer app. the 8 player co-op got me excited enough to make a thread about it. what's going to be interesting is how resistance 2 vs killzone 2 vs gears of war 2 compete against each other this fall. if killzone 2 doesn't get delayed. i'm confident geow2 and r2 will definitely be released this year. maybe the market is large enough to sustain two good fps games in a quarter, like halo 3 and cod4 this year. i'm surprised how well the wii is continuing to do. hopefully better games will be released outside of nintendos first party games. no more heroes is a interesting game, but it sort of bombed in japan. definitely going to have to wait on the reviews before picking this one up. monster hunter 3 is going to be great if there is online multiplayer. if it doesn't....i have no frigging clue why they would released it on the wii other than to cash in.
Let's just say I don't agree with most of this at all (although I do think they'll be able to do a lot more things with Resistance 2). I certainly think it was more of a killer app than COD4 (mostly based on SP, probably give COD4 the edge in MP although Resistance isn't too shabby). I'd like to wait for Sony to play a few more of their cards to make sure (Home, more games, lower prices, etc.), but this is probably the most likely scenario. Talking about oversea sales. Not sure about LTD sales, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 sold better in Europe, Japan, etc., than the 360 did in 2007 (and the PS3 was still launching in major regions in 2007). Basically, the PS3 has had poor sales in the main 3 regions. The 360 has had good sales in the US/NA, really poor sales in Europe (or at least that seems to be the trend), and it is practically nonexistent in Japan/Asia. They're both selling like crap IMO actually (at least WW sales).

Crysis could be coming to PS3 N4G.com I got a chance to play it on a friend's comp, he doesn't have the top of the line but even on medium settings this game looked good.
Resistance is not in the same league as COD 4. This has nothing to do with MS vs SONY or dumb fanboyism rant....I have both consoles and have played both. IMO, Resistance like Chow yun fat said was pushed as a killer app to coincide with the PS3's launch. I don't think Resistance is a triple A title. Triple A titles are games like COD4, Oblivion, MGS4, Gears, Mass Effect, Orange box, ect...Where does Resistance fit in there? The game is mediocre at best, sorta like a game EA would put out. I hope resistance 2 is much improved over the 1st. I really want to see how they pull off the 60 person MP mode....If done right that'll be awesome... RC, do you know if Sony is going to stick with the current SKU's or release another incarnation of the PS3?
You didn't say anything about the game itself which is what I asked Chow to do. You just reiterated you don't think it is a killer ap. I don't think any games can be "pushed" by the system or developer as a killer ap. It was the critical and fan response that gave it so much cred. I'll ask again, what was it about the game that you thought was not great. What do you think other FPSs like COD 4 did better? This would be great but I'm not sure it's much more than fanboy propaganda like MGS4 going to the 360 or Mass Effect/Bioshock doing the the PS3. From what people have said in the threads on the rumor, the PS3 could run the medium settings for the game at best.
i didn't find it fun. i know you and RC love resistance, i just didn't. heck, i even contemplated purchasing cod4 for months before i purchased it on sale for $30. my favorite part of the game is playing the story mode in co-op. - not enough blood (i know it doesn't make a difference in gameplay but it sure feels more satisfying after a kill) - limited variety of enemies (come on, for a fictional story you could come up with more unique enemies) - destructible objects? (there should be more destructible objects aka eye candy) - vehicles (only a tank?) give me a jeep with a chase scene or a tank scene instead of a one minute tank ride. - multiplayer maps(too large. needs to be scaled to the amount of players in a game) - multiplayer maps2 (i have yet to play a fps with better map design than cs. granted the map designs in cs are custom) - multiplayer maps3 (custom designed maps - this would open the door to infinite playability. this would also pose a problem with what ut3 is facing now, unless they implement a system where you can download the map from the user prior to the match) - multiplayer maps4 (where is the tank warz?? that would've been fun. instead of humans vs chimoire, everyone fights in a tank!) - ragdoll effects (another eye candy - after watching the rag doll effects in killzone 2, this should be standard in all fps games) - details (i forgot why, but i think the game should have had more detail. maybe in the characters etc, i don't remember. i just remember the game being sort of plain in a way) i think there might be more, but i don't remember. haven't played the game in over a year so i can't pin point every little thing that i think they could've improved on. i guess the story wasn't that appealing to me either, although the voice acting and the visuals is good. while we're at it. i'll tell you what i don't like about cod4. - contrast is too high. my contrast levels is below normal and this game still blinds the batsiht out of me sometimes. - invisible grenades. i am slowly learning the grenade points, so it's probably not as big as a deal. especially when i kill half the opposing team with one grenade - auto aim - it sucks - makes it too easy for nubs to get kills. all you have to do is move your cursor over a enemy and wait for it to lock on. once it locks on, he's pretty much dead. you don't have to adjust the controls, just hold down the fire button. - right hand only - why can't i switch to a left hand model? i've died so many times because i was used to playing with a left handed model on cs that i naded myself many times in cod4. - kb/mouse - where is the kb/m support? - cross platform online - minor grip because it's impossible but wouldn't it be wonderful? - blood - where's the blood? for a realistic army sim....no blood is oozing out when i shoot someone. - aim issues - im right in front of someone and drop a whole clip in them. they don't die because apparently all my bullets missed even when my cursor is right on him, but not locked on. - multiplayer maps - too much junk everywhere. i'm trying to strafe but i'll bump into a rock and it'll stop me from moving. i'll die because i didn't memorize every little bump/rock/edge of the map to avoid it while i was strafing. where's the small maps where you can hide and ambush people? some maps are too large. you have to search the grass, the houses, the corners, behind the cars, etc to find someone. need some indoor maps instead of every map being outdoors with houses. btw, crysis is not coming out for the ps3.
they might have that perk that increases dexterity. you need to keep playing to get more perks, there's a 'steady aim' perk too. the better weapons you acquire, the easier to get frags.
I'm sure they'll always be open to tinkering with the SKUs. I heard rumors about a deal being worked out with Tivo that would create a DVR add-on. If that happens, I could see another SKU with the DVD built-in (or whatever). Probably wouldn't happen immediately though. How many did you want? Thinking back about it, I think there was WAY more variety in Resistance than most of the FPS games I've played recently. Counting the "boss" types (like Stalkers, although most of these types appear frequently near the end), there are at least 10 different enemy types IIRC (not counting the different kind of hybrids with different weapons/AI/toughness/etc.). Most of your other complaints seemed extremely minor (even with COD4), or dealt with the MP section of the game, which I don't bother with (just wanting to know how the SP section is). If that's what you feel is important in a game, then I understand your opinion...sort of. We're in the 360/PS3 generation, where nearly every game is 30 FPS (and a lot of those aren't even natively supporting 720p...not that anyone would care). COD4 was an exception, and I definitely give them props for that. The technical aspects of COD4 are actually one of the few aspects of the game that I think are clearly better than Resistance. I'll note that Resistance rarely (if ever) dropped below 30, even during the intense moments (which got pretty crazy). I'd take that over an inconsistent framerate that maxes out at 60 (most people probably didn't even know Resistance was 30 FPS due to how smooth it was). Regarding Crysis, I don't think it is out of the question that it would come to consoles (IOW, PS3 and 360). I actually assume it will, or a spinoff of it anyway. I know Crytek is definitely working on consoles (particularly the PS3, but I think people might be putting too much into the PS3 aspect, which probably led to this rumor).
Yeah, you know, the MGS games are great, but that game alone wouldn't be enough for me to buy a PS3 if I didn't have one already. However, Tekken 6 would be, and I have a lot of friends who second me on that. Ditto on FF13 if the reviews are good enough. And, as I've mentioned before, if they ever actually did do a FF7 remake, everyone who ever loved RPGs would probably buy a PS3. I just don't see myself ever buying a 360. It's a good system and all... but it seems like all the good exclusives eventually come out for PC anyway, and I plan on buying myself a decent gaming PC in about a year. The Wii though... it doesn't have A LOT of games I want, but the ones it does have seem like must-owns... Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Strikers: Charged, Super Mario Galaxy. Those three alone are probably enough to justify my getting a Wii. I'm thinking I'll pick one up once they get easier to find.
