Hilary got dragged for saying half of Trump supporters are a basket of deplorable but she is right. The way forward it to separate the deplorable from the deplorables’ collaborators.

The collaborators we can win over, the truth committed deplorables are likely too far gone.

I wouldn't worry about that. If it remains a Republican Senate or a very narrow Democratic majority I don't think we'll see any major changes regarding firearms.

Even the Democrat party fighting for it in the House or the Biden adminstration will create a fear based propaganda wave on conservative media. Hence why I included "try". I agree that I doubt it would pass but the mere attempt is going to frighten so many voters. And these people will never vote Democrat but many of them are rather apolticial and don't show up to vote often who only are motivated by gun control rhetoric to go out and vote. Democrats discussing gun control is a great turnout motivator for the GOP base.

I can see routinely how my former peers react to different political subject matter and they are always the most vehement and most adamant when it comes to gun control. They'll even agree on some of my economic talking points. But when it comes to gun regulation, that's a non-starter for so many Americans even stronger than abortion.

I try to refrain from specific finger pointing but Beto's gun control rheotric is hurting Democrats' chances of turning Texas blue.

I don't think liberals should worry about guns right now. We have much bigger problems.

Agree let’s get to work on Covid first. Let’s save lives and get people on the same page about the masks, social distancing and washing hands

    https://www.budget.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/SBC Trump Budget Reaction 3-20-19 FINAL.pdf

I mean that was the proposed budget cut to things like SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and the list goes on just for tax cuts to the rich. Then Covid happened and I'm not even sure if Senate is still cutting the budget to these programs or it's since halted. But that was the plan going forward and if Trump won, another 4 years of similar cuts like that.

I think Trump starved some of his core base that depends on these programs and then told them it's not his fault their quality of life is getting worse. It's <insertwhateverexcuse> here.

I don't even think Trump succeeded as an actual populist. He talked it sure, but these handouts that I've seen shared to buy selfishly motivated voters just doesn't exist. What did he handout that he didn't take away more of in actual legislation?

I mean unless you got shares in the stock market or earned greater than $400,000 a year, then Trump wasn't working for your best interests. And even then we know the stock market is being propped up by historically low Fed rates and tax cuts that lead to stock buybacks from their own company. Not to mention all the consumer debt that props up this economy as you've mentioned many times on here.

I wonder what Trump himself will do— run again for 2024? He has to do something to stay relevant.

I suspect I’m on the minority but I don’t see why we should ignore common sense legislation because a group of people haven’t progressed yet?? If Democrats needed to be more racist in policy in order to court poor white blue collar certainly we wouldn’t say “hope they keep these racist policies in place”.

as with most things Democratic Party related, the failure is in (I) messaging of the potential policy change and (2) combating lobbying. On the former it’s the “they’re going to take our guns” crap. On the later... it’s the continued beholdeness to the NRA which is a very small organization that represents very few Americans.

Americans already are not allowed to have a variety of weaponry. We are already required to have a license and go through background checks for various things. Etc. please fix the marketing of what you want to do Dems.

    moreover...

    https://news.gallup.com/poll/1645/guns.aspx

as I already noted... just change the laws and the majority of Americans won’t have any problem anyway. It will impact so very very few people to make ARs illegal and require more extensive and exhaustive background checks to purchase legal weapons.

all of which piggybacks on my post this morning.

this is all like accepting homosexuality. Or Recognizing climate change exists. Or becoming less racist. Or letting women do more than just be housewife’s. These things have all changed to become more progressive over the years and except for the 1%-5% of true nutball crazies out there... such changes have impacted those resistant to those changes in basically no way.

fix districting. Pack the courts. Remove money from politics. Change from electoral college to ranked choice voting.

America will be more representative of the majority and any risk of losing future elections to Trump like republicans is extremely minimized because of the changes.

again... look at the Texas congressional district maps. It’s INSANE. Look at Texas 21.... 35.... 10... most of Harris county... the Dallas metro. sure, the Texas legislature might still be red after this election if they weren’t insane ... but it’s be much closer and hanging very soon.

if I’m a democrat that is my exclusive focus, beyond Covid. Win the 2 seats in GA, have Kamal be the tie breaker... then fix all the gerrymandering, lobbying bullshit that has created this divide in the first place.

There is no easy answer to this and I think it has to come to messaging and also to responsible Republican leadership. That at least 70 million voters still were willing to give Trump another chance and that the Senate is likely out of reach and that the House is narrower shows that Trumpism is far from defeated.

The best thing that could've happened to this country and even the Republican party was to have a landslide. Instead this just shows that the country is as divided as ever and that support for the message of Trump runs deep.

As others have noted many of Trump's policies actually hurt his base more. I've related the story of how a blue collar Trump supporter I know living on the edge of rural MN was doing much worse than I an urban professional living in the part of the state that is the most anti-Trump. During the past four years that's been the same throughout the country. The coastal elites have thrived under the Trump economy. People who make money off of things like investments and hi tech have done particularly well. For people who are tied to farming haven't done so well. Even for the Trump's much vaunted calls to bring back coal coal jobs have declined under Trump and WV is still beset with many of the same economic and social problems that were under Obama.

The perception that the problems faced by rural, exurban and blue collar American are based upon immigrants and unfair trade practices isn't exactly true and protectionist policies have hurt those areas. Yet that perception is very powerful even to the point that farmers who are facing bankruptcy because of loss of foreign markets still support Trump believing that Trump was doing the right thing and that things will turn around. That shows how powerful that messaging is.

At the same time Democrats and the Left have been hurting themselves with their messaging and allowed themselves to be defined by their opposition. It's understandable there is a lot of anger over things like systemic racism but the response in rhetoric and action from many on the Left has really helped the Right's message. As someone who witnessed this first hand and went out to protect my neighborhood, the failure of the Left to unequivocally speak out against the destruction following George Floyd's death I fully believe hurt Democrat chances.

To defeat Trumpism it's going to take a lot of things. Starting with changing the messaging. I think Biden made a great start last night and saying that "our political opponents aren't our enemies and that we are all Americans" was very important. As those who are very concerned about systemic racism in LE we can continue to address and speak out against that while recognizing how rhetoric like "DEFUND THE POLICE!" can be misinterpreted and used to cause fear and uncertainty among many. And while it may be hard at times recognize the goodness of those who we don't agree with. I know sometimes listening to die hard Trump supporters can sometimes be infuriating and frustrating but I know for me some of the most die hard Trump supporters I know have treated me personally well and I judge them more by that than not what memes they might post on FB.

It will also take leadership from the GOP and media influencers in the Rightwing. Those in the Republican party who need to speak out more against unfounded conspiracies and divisive rhetoric. This doesn't mean give up on Conservative principles of limited government or traditional cultural norms but not advancing ideas that the Left is evil and out to destroy America.

Most importantly we as a country and a society need to more critical thinking. We need to be able to assess things less on how they inflame emotions and more on how much they might actually make sense. We're at a time though where many assess stuff not just not doing critical thinking but anti-critically. It's why we get things like that because it doesn't get reported my the MSM or is supported by expertise, becomes it's own justification for assessing something. "Of course the MSM doesn't want you to know this because that would expose them!" "Of course the experts don't want you to know this because it would expose them!" "Think for yourself don't listen to the experts!" Or why somethings that don't make sense on the surface becomes a justification, "That's what they would like you to think!"

I don't expect things to change much anytime soon. Even if Trump is gone Trumpism is still going to be with us for quite awhile.

Sometimes you say things that leave me scratching my head. People DO give a **** about climate change. Its when politicians put agendas between people and their $$$ is when people start balking. Cap and Trade is very ignorant and accomplishes nothing. While I don't advocate leaving the Paris agreement, I do find it ineffective ...until it can stop some of the biggest polluters like China.

Industries all around the world are coming up with more creative ways to reduce energy consumption. There is a growing race for the EV market. The green energy initiative is much closer than many realize. Solar roofs and powerwalls can be a reality.

I suspect the progressive left is pushing the student loan forgiveness narrative in open forum. Bidens first mission is to deal with COVID properly. And that is going to easily take up the 1st year of his term.

I think you have to, especially when it comes to fixing the police/keeping people safe. Same with drug abuse along with economic anxiety. The police issue isn’t just the police departments and brutality...lot goes into why the police departments are the way they are and if you don’t fix those things, you probably aren’t fixing police departments.

The amount of guns and the type of guns available is a huge reason for the increase in military militarization and their use of force.

Even Fox viewers and Floridians want living wages along with bigger better more beautiful healthcare for all, yet that party will equate that to 'socialism' It's Absurd. Fixing those 2 issues should be a priority by both parties.
My answer would be the same as I've replied to similar threads. You have to peel off the layers of this 401K mythical Jesus that the party has created. Once you do that you can separate the Real Christians from the want to be seen Christians and the "America first" people, which if you study has a dark origin in the USA.
Personally State and Church should be separated but it is what it is. Dems can't continue to allow Republicans pretend they're holy when they're just as flawed as the godless foreign aholes they hate.

I wanted to find the Thread where Trump holds the bible but couldn't find it. Here are the stats:
Biden knocked it out the park with Catholic Latinos, 67% to 32%. If it were baseball that's a .320 pct or The Orioles at 58 wins and 108 losses for Trump.
The same cannot be said by whites catholics but that's why we have to rip apart 401k JC. Biden still improved from Hilary, 47%. Trump had 57% of White Catholics
    https://www.newsweek.com/catholics-helped-elect-joe-biden-more-voters-shrugged-off-abortion-issues-hostile-clergy-1545775
Almost the same stats for Black Baptists and Hispanic Baptists supporting Biden while White Baptist and Rubio Evangelicals stomped Biden like a mario world goomba.
401k imitation Jesus that the gop created is a very powerful one but it can be destroyed and replaced by the real one. What will it accomplish? Take away their created Jesus and they will have to run on those things that even Floridians love.

Like SamFisher has been saying all over the board it's a broken system. It's true unfortunately.

Most of the victims of police brutality are unarmed - so you can't tell me that guns are the issue. If Democrats focus on gun control, I promise you that they will be shut out of the gov't by 2024. It's a foolish strategy.

America isn't going to give up its guns no more than it will give up pickup trucks. This is what the right uses to rally support.

The libs are socialists who want to take away our guns, our pickup trucks, our religion, and our jobs. A lot of America feels that their way of life has been criticized and told it's front. Everything from their diet to their values.

Right now, there are more important issues. Climate change is a problem, but you won't solve it with a green new deal that threatens a lot of people. Health care is a problem. The standard of living is a problem. Education is a problem which goes hand in hand with jobs.

It won't be the next instance of police brutality that will bring up gun control reform. It will unfortunately be the next school shooting and what automatic weapon that shooter used this time. Remember when those were happening at an almost daily rate before Covid shutdowns?

Trump should take credit for that too. "I alone stopped school shootings!" Narrator: "School had been cancelled due to Covid"

You know, I wonder what it is that's caused school shootings to stop for the time being. I know with shut downs school was distance learning and then there was summer break. But we're entering in the Fall now and some colleges and public schools have been sending kids back to the classroom.

Are these potential shooters feeling bad for the state of the country or something? Is it just being under reported given elections? You'd think with behavioral health trends trending downward there would be an uptick in violence and maybe there is and I just haven't researched it enough. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there hasn't been widely documented cases of mass shootings recently, but I wonder what the cause is. Maybe whatever the cause is, could hopefully be focused to lessen the frequency of school shootings in the future.

Maybe some of these shooters that tend to be on autistic spectrum or have some sort of social impairment are benefiting from distance learning where they can still get an education but don't feel so alienated or isolated from their peers in an actual classroom. There has to be reasons right?

Without Cap and Trade we might not be seeing so many creative ways to reduce energy consumption or develop more renewables. We needed to incentive the market to make reductions in carbon usage and there was little incentive until Cap and Trade.

Ban, no. University background check, yes. Also “red flag” laws. Maybe even licensing requirements. Common sense stuff with wide support.
