November Video Game Preview Thread

Who got the Uncharted demo? After playing CoD4, I was a bit let down by the quality of the opening cutscene. I like the gameplay, switching guns is very easy and the puzzles didn't need explanation. The camera didn't bother me that much, but I can see why previewers talked about it. It seems to try to show you where to go next at points before giving you back control of it.

I'm still going to buy it.

I did...doesn't seem as good as R&C, however the environment graphics in Uncharted are gorgeous

the gameplay was alright, seems like it takes some getting used to. I may or may not buy it, depending on what the professional reviewers say

I didn't really like how many enemies would spawn, or how they spawned either. Not really a big deal, but I probably would have liked it better if that was tweaked (and maybe it will be in the final version). Other than that, I came away pretty pleased with most of the other aspects of the game (visuals, gameplay, controls, camera, etc.). The platforming seemed pretty easy to me, which is a relief since I'm typically not that good at platforming (I get VERY frustrated at games that screw this up).

I guess I'm missing things since I haven't played CoD4, but what was wrong with the quality of the opening cutscene? I've seen most of that cutscene numerous times, so it has kind of lost its effect on me. But I really enjoyed the last 20-30 seconds or so of new footage (definitely starting to like Nathan Drake as a character).

It certainly was a different direction, and no one probably knew how it would work out, but it wasn't like the fate of the company rested on that decision being a success. If the Wii was a failure, it probably still would have sold 10M-15M systems (at a profit), and Nintendo still would have sold tons of copies of Mario, Zelda, SSB, Metroid, Pokemon, etc. It would be a big failure, and yet they'd probably end up making more money than Microsoft would on the 360. I think it would have been more interesting had they changed up a few things, which would make things riskier, but potentially more rewarding to Nintendo and/or the industry. so it wasnt a huge chance because their companies asses wasnt necessarily on the line? A failing Wii would have all but eliminated Nin from the console market and left them relegated to the handheld. Which is fine, they do well. But Nin isnt exactly a huge company with income coming in everywhich way...like say Sony or Microsoft.

Well I think they actually took over Sony in terms of revenue. I think They're like #1 or #2 now in Japan amongst all companies

I just watched it again. It wasn't bad, but Elena's eyes and mouth seemed odd. I watched the trailer they released in May right before I saw it last night, maybe that's why it bothered me. I was showing my wife the changes in her appearance (brunette to blonde, her voice is slightly different too). The last bit really gets you into Drake's shoes and works really well to go into the demo. Maybe I was expecting too much. I still want the game!

I enjoyed the Demo. You have to remember that this isn't the final build and from what I've heard from websites that have played the final build that a lot of the problems have been fixed. Visually, I thought it was amazing. I loved how his clothes reacted to being in water and you could see that he was getting soaked. Since I already beat COD4, I'll probably trade it in for this game.

I don't think it would have eliminated Nintendo from the console market, although they definitely would have been regulated to more of a small piece of the overall market (similar to the what the Gamecube had). I'm sure there was pressure to do something different to try and recapture the top spot though, which is why they went that route. It just seems like if the Wii was a failure, Nintendo would be in roughly the same situation they were in 2-3 years ago. On the other hand, if MS, Sony, or some other company (Sega?) went the same route and it turned out to be a failure, I'm not too sure they'd get another chance to make a home console (in some cases, they'd probably never even get the chance because it was too risky).

Yeah, I think I know what you mean about Elena's eyes and mouth. I didn't really pay much attention to it when I originally saw it, but it kind of does stand out now that you mention it.

And FWIW, my sense of time is terrible. I said the last 20-30 seconds earlier, but after watching the cutscene again, I think I meant more like the last 2 minutes.

COD 4 is a really good game, and i'm not much of an FPS fan.
I'm going to also be getting Assassins Creed this week, which I hope will be great.

The game I'm really looking foward to is Mass Effect. Just by knowing Bioware games and reading the review in Game Informer it's going to be up there for game of the year, and in my opinion, the best game coming out this month. Which is saying something with all these great games being released.

Telling the origin story of a well established franchise can be an extremely hazardous thing to do, but Silent Hill: 0rigins manages to wrap both the mythology of the movie and games together in an impressive package on the PSP. With a good storyline, intriguing gameplay elements and excellent production and replay value, 0rigins is definitely worthy of a Silent Hill fan's attention. While the combat and camera system is pretty weak, and the manual control over shifting between dimensions removes the feeling of dread, 0rigins does justice to the series as a whole.

SOCOM: Tactical Strike

When all's said and done, you may be somewhat discouraged from giving this game a try, but we would like to reemphasize that it's still fun, despite its flaws. Although the A.I. can be stupid, the overall control interface is slick and setting up strategic attacks can be totally rad. If you're a huge fan of strategy/tactical games, this one may be worth your time, if you can forgive the problems we discussed. And with a relatively refined multiplayer system that doesn't get weighed down by lag, Tactical Strike is a respectable member of the SOCOM family, though perhaps not the brightest of the bunch.

Sure, it may be twenty dollars, but unless you're a hardcore Metal Gear Solid fan, you're not really gaining much with this lackluster expansion pack, which loses more than it gains. In fact, the title could've been handled better as a downloadable patch or update to the game file instead of a standalone that doesn't really improve on the formula. No story, unbalanced multiplayer and hampered recruiting mechanics all combine to make this a disappointing addition to one of the best games from last year.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

To call Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn a Wii game is to take the meaning of that statement as literal as possible. Yes, it runs on Wii, comes in a cute white box, and you’ll pay $49.99 for it. From there, however, the experience is anything but Wii-like, as the game uses no motion, no IR, no Mii integration, and no online. While some gamers will scoff at this fact, diehard Fire Emblem fans already understand the choice made by Nintendo, as the series hasn’t needed to change in nearly 20 years, and shouldn’t be expected to now. The game supports Wii-mote control in classic NES-style, the GameCube controller, and the Classic Controller, so no matter what your setup you can still dive into one of the deepest, mature, and traditionally rooted titles on Nintendo consoles.

What you’ll miss, however, is any sort of upgrade from the GameCube version which is on sale for $20 new. Radiant Dawn is a direct sequel to the Cube’s Path of Radiance, and as such looks, acts, and feels identical. You’ll still get very little VO, minimal animation overall, GameCube graphics, and extremely simply storytelling that makes use of only a backdrop and some character art. Why the production value in Fire Emblem has yet to be completely overhauled is beyond us, but apparently someone at Nintendo things traditional games need to not only play like a game two decades old, but also look similar as well. If you’re looking for an entertaining, challenging, traditional strategy game, look no further, as Fire Emblem is as good as it gets. Just don’t expect anything more than GameCube presentation, visuals, and control for $50.

DQ Joker

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker may not be a mind-blowing, innovative experience on DS, but it carries on the DQM lineage just the same. Combining some impressive 3D work on the DS with over 200 collectable monsters, a lack of the somewhat irritating random dungeon generator, far more depth and production value overall, and impressive depth in a monster battler, Joker is a great chance for the more niche RPG gamers on DS to dive into the Monsters series for the first time and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. It’s far from perfect though, as the game is essentially more of the same for the series, and ends up cutting a few corners to squeeze it all in, specifically when looking at monster diversity (change the color palate, give it a new name), a somewhat basic interface, and some technical limits in 3D draw distance and world geometry. Those expecting a product with the overall polish, scope, and grandeur of the Pokemon series may be let down. That being said, DQM is easily worth the cash for monster battlers that are looking for a new game to latch onto after Nintendo’s first party effort grows stale, as it’s more ambitious technically, has a stronger battle mechanic, and brings monster battle customization to whole new level on DS.

Link's Crossbow Training

As a standalone product, I wouldn't buy the Wii Zapper. It doesn't do anything for me. But I wouldn't pass up the chance to own Link's Crossbow Training. It's a short, but nevertheless fun demo that reunites Zelda fans with one of Nintendo's greatest icons while simultaneously providing a new way to see the lands and enemies that Link explores and fights respectively. The shooting mechanics are well done and the visual presentation looks like something right out of Twilight Princess – which, obviously, it is. I would have preferred more stages and more options, but for $19.99, I'm a little more forgiving.

As an interesting aside, I would definitely be keen on buying future demo games of this type on Wii if they were also priced for the bargain bins.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings isn’t some blockbuster epic of a game that’ll rocket the DS RPG genre into legendary status. If you’re looking for the traditional FF experience, you’ll find that with XII on PS2. What Revenant Wings offers, however, is the next step in the story, complete with some inspiring music, beautiful visuals, impressive CGI, and some innovative RTS-like gameplay. We’ve got a few gripes with the design, as units will often bunch together, enemy AI still isn’t too bright, and the linear feel makes it easy to stock up on units and then run your blob of fighters from beginning to end with little challenge – at least during the first half of the game – but as an overall product Revenant Wings is nothing short of impressive. There are tons of side quests and hunts in the game, a huge amount of RPG depth in items, equipment, and skills, and an overwhelming amount of fan service for those that – like us - can’t get enough from the FFXII world.

If you own a PSP, be sure to check out "beats" at the playstation store online. It costs $4.99 and is good fun with eye candy on top. It's like a mix of GH with Lumines and you can play it with your own music like the Harmonix one on Ipod. You can also remix loops or play with the preloaded stuff. But why would you do that!

Guess I should've spent my last $7 on beats instead of rally cross (wtf ps1 game suxxxx). I've played the all the demo's that interest me and came away disappointed.

Uncharted - First time I got stuck in the water fall and quit (haha). Second time I actually made it past the first puzzle and continously got shot down by enemies who spawned right next to mee?? They spawn like crazy.... kinda killed it for me.

R&C - Too kiddie ish for me. I like basic gameplay but this game, idk, I just couldn't get into it after 15 minutes.

Sega Rally - I was really looking forward to this game. Played it roughly ten times and the best record I could get is second place. Didn't really like the game...reminded me of the same old Sega Rally on the Dreamcast.

Nba2k8 - wtf happened here? The game was very clunky. Felt like there was lag when I tried any moves...and I couldn't dunk. Before, all you had to do was hold down the turbo? button and press the shoot button running towards/near the basket and they would dunk? Now? All I get is a pump fake then some lame off the glass lay up.

Hopefully there will be a COD4 demo soon? I'm still on the fence about it. I guess if it's on sale for less than $40 I'll bite.

I concur. COD4 is my top game so far. Uncharted behind that (Crushing mode was HARD).

damn, you're a PS3 fanboy and you don't even like 2 of the best games that have come out on any system for the entire year!

both R&C and Uncharted are awesome games, top-notch

Ironically, I just came back from Blockbuster with COD4, though I was hoping to leave with Uncharted or Assassin's Creed to be honest (two stores I went to didn't have either game ).
