As you can see, I did not include any of the PS3 or Wii launch games that aren’t multiplatform games (ala Sonic or Metal Slug Anthology). I started with them in, but that was an additional 20+ games to the already large list of games, and I wasn’t including a bunch of the lesser known launch games (Blazing Angels, Full Auto 2, Avatar, Cars, etc). So instead of throwing everything into this thread, I think I’m going to go one more month with no PS3/Wii games in this thread (outside of the multiplatform games, but those will still be covered in the other threads). Along with keeping this thread somewhat clean, that will also allow me some extra time to make sure things are completely accurate (some of the given release dates for PS3/Wii games seem a bit off), and it might also give me the chance to cover some of the Virtual Console and PSN downloadable games that will be available at launch (although I probably won’t keep up with that after launch, similar to how I don’t keep up with XBLA games…unless you guys want me to keep up with all 3 services from now on).

So yeah, as you can tell, this is a HUGE month for games, even without considering the launches of the PS3 and Wii. The 360 is getting perhaps its biggest game yet (Gears of War), as well as some nice eye-candy in Viva Pinata and DOA Xtreme 2. You have Guitar Hero 2 coming out for the PS2, which I believe is a favorite among some of the members here. A bunch of seemingly great puzzle games are coming out on the PSP and DS with Lumines 2 (complete with the Black Eyed Peas and Gwen Stefani ), Every Extend Extra, and Gunpey. Then you have a bunch of the big annual releases such as COD, Tony Hawk, Smackdown vs Raw, Rainbow Six, etc.

BTW, 3 games that I previewed last month are now November titles. Children of Mana is out November 1st (the IGN review was posted in the last thread), The Red Star is out November 7th, and EA Replay is out November 14th.

I'll be spoiler tagging the previews+images of the games coming out, so you won't have to worry about loading a page with a bunch of content after seeing it once already (similar to some of the other ways I've used the spoiler tags in the past).

Medieval 2 (PC)

From our time with the game, we got the sense that Medieval 2 is going to be just as compelling as its predecessor. We really like the evolutionary advancements in the gameplay, and the graphics update is very welcome considering the dated 2D battle sprites of the original game. This is a huge game with lots to discover in it, and you'll be able to play it yourself when it ships next month.

Gothic 3 (PC)

We were told by one of the developers that "rushing" through the game would require approximately 40 hours of gameplay, and if you take into account the sides that you can take in each encounter and quest, that amounts to a hefty amount of replayability. With its open-ended gameplay and strong similarities to Oblivion, it's clear that publisher Aspyr hopes that Gothic 3 is the next big single-player RPG for the PC. The game reminds us quite a bit of Oblivion, and of last year's Fable, as well. Gothic 3 doesn't seem to be going for the epic, apocalyptic story of Oblivion, though. Instead, it seems like it's going for a more immersive and intimate experience in a fantasy world. Gothic 3 is scheduled to ship later this year.

Gears of War (360)

We weren't allowed to get our hands on the game on this occasion, but we did get to watch a member of the development team play for around 20 minutes as he talked us through some noteworthy features of the story mode.

Viva Pinata (360)

Speaking of gameplay, while we were playing Viva Piñata, passersby in the office most frequently asked the question: What is the goal? There is a story in the game, but it is present only as a series of entries in your journal that you'll unlock as your gardening level improves. Newly implemented missions that task you with packing specific piñatas into crates within a time limit also help to keep things interesting, although you're free to ignore them and just concentrate on your garden if you prefer. Truthfully, your goal in Viva Piñata is whatever you want it to be. For example, our main (not particularly ambitious) goals this week were to get cinnamonkeys into our garden and to successfully breed sherbats. The monkeys were relatively straightforward, but the bats required a little more effort because they first appeared in our garden as evil vampiric-looking sours. Our other goal, of course, has been to earn as many of Viva Piñata's 1,000 achievement points as possible. The game's achievements work in much the same way as those in Dead Rising. This is not because one of them requires you to kill more than 53,000 zombies but rather because there are 50 achievements, and each one is worth 20 points. Most of the achievement requirements are "secret" at the start of the game, but we've already unlocked 12, simply by playing the game.

DOA Xtreme 2 (360)

Based on what we've played so far, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 is shaping up to be a more robust follow-up to its predecessor. The minigames are fun and are funny to watch. The one interesting thing to note is that Tecmo may well find itself in the same position it was in when the original Dead or Alive shipped 10 years ago--despite the fact that the game was a solid fighter, people fixated on the breast action. While DOAX2 isn't in the same league as the first fighter in the series, it is still a solid game that has the potential to be very fun. We'll be anxious to see more of the game, especially the adventure mode, in the coming weeks. Look for more soon.

SOCOM Combined Assault (PS2)

A couple of new features that we did get to see in action during our demo were the medikit, which can be used to restore health at any time during a mission if you're carrying one, and the new team command action (TCA) system. In SOCOM 3, the team command menu (TCM) let you issue orders to your squad quite easily, but it wasn't streamlined enough to be practical during the middle of a firefight. The new TCA system, which works in tandem with the TCM, uses a context-sensitive cursor that lets you give the most common orders in a fraction of the time. If you move the cursor over a door, for example, you might get an option to breach it, while hovering over an enemy will default to an option ordering your squad to attack.

Guitar Hero 2 (PS2)

RedOctane and Harmonix seem to have taken the tack of not fixing something that wasn't broken to begin with. Guitar Hero II will be immediately recognizable to anyone who fiddled with the first one, but the subtle gameplay improvements and towering track list ought to make it deliver in the long term. We're excited about some of the notable tracks yet unannounced in the game, but you'll get the full rundown directly from RedOctane soon. In the meantime, try to rest your fingers.

I haven’t been paying much attention to what songs are in the game, but apparently you can play the Trogdor song from Homestarrunner.com…which is both weird and awesome at the same time.

The Sopranos (PS2)

Lumines 2 (PSP)

Given how well the original Lumines came together and how promising Lumines II already looks, we're confident that Q's follow-up will stand as one of the better PSP games this year. The gameplay is as addictive as ever, and the presentation has benefited from the new multimedia approach. Lumines II should have the appeal and content to retain the original's fan base as well as attract newcomers to its unique puzzle experience. As fans of the original, we're anxious to get our hands on the game for a much longer period of time to poke around and see how this all comes together. Look for more on Lumines II in the months leading up to its fall release.

Every Extend Extra (PSP)

Tetsuya Mizuguchi's Q Entertainment has already released two games--Lumines and Meteos--that blend unique meditations on fairly traditional puzzle game concepts with very pronounced artistic styles. So it's little surprise that the company took an interest in Every Extend, a homebrewed PC freeware game that Q Entertainment has enhanced significantly and turned into the upgraded Every Extend Extra for the PlayStation Portable. We've been playing the import version since it recently hit store shelves in Japan, and we're here with our thoughts, as well as a big heap of new gameplay videos for your viewing pleasure.

SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 2 (PSP)

Gitaroo-Man Lives (PSP)

Elite Beat Agents (DS)

Elite Beat Agents is a rhythm game developed by Iris and published by Nintendo. The game is essentially a follow-up to a Japanese DS game called Osu! Tatake! Ouendan that was released last year. Yoshi’s Island DS (DS)

Yoshi's Island 2 is one of many Nintendo DS games on display at E3 2006, but it stands out as one of the prettiest-looking. The game seems like an unapologetic throwback to the glory days of 2D platformers. We didn't see any real use of the DS touch screen, for instance, and the game's two screens are used simply to give the levels a greater sense of scale, such as when Yoshi jumps on a trampoline and goes flying from the bottom screen up to the top. Final Fantasy III (DS)

We've wanted more solid RPGs on the DS for a long time now, and Final Fantasy III looks like it will fit the bill quite nicely. The beginning of the game has a suitably old-school feel to it, and we won't complain too much if that sense persists as the presumably epic quest progresses. Call of Duty 3 (Multi)

With such an established franchise as Call of Duty, you don't want to make too many big changes to the core formula or you risk alienating the series' fan base. Thus Treyarch seems to have incrementally improved on all of the previous game's strong points, creating a sequel with the same flavor as the original but with enough new gameplay and increased realism that fans should find an incentive to enlist yet again. Call of Duty 3 is due out in early November on the Xbox 360, with the Wii and PlayStation 3 versions to follow thereafter.

Smackdown vs Raw 2007 (Multi)

It only took an entire console generation to make it happen, but it looks like a Microsoft console will finally be getting a worthwhile wrestling game in SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007. This year's game looks to be bigger and prettier than ever, and it certainly doesn't look like it lacks content. And of course, you PS2 owners don't look to be left out in the cold, as save for the shorter load times and upgraded graphics, the PS2 version looks to include every change found in the 360 game. Sonic The Hedgehog (Multi)

Based on what we played, Sonic the Hedgehog is shaping up to be a unique entry in the series. We haven't seen the playable roster of characters in a Sonic game so active in a good long while. We appreciate the game's attempt to be different than the previous entries in the series, and we're curious to see how these pieces mesh in the final game. To date, we've only seen these action sequences and haven't been able to check out the town levels yet. If all goes according to plan, Sonic the Hedgehog will live up to its potential of reinvigorating the classic franchise for a new set of consoles. Rainbow Six Vegas (Multi)

Rainbow Six Vegas' single-player campaign has been looking better every time we've seen it the last few months. The game is making great use of the third-generation Unreal Engine--we were highly impressed at one point to emerge from a warehouse onto a catwalk and see a brilliant sunset over the hillside horizon outside of town, which was seemingly a good couple of miles away. We're looking forward to seeing how the designers map Vegas' core gameplay concepts onto the elaborate casino environments of Sin City, and we'll get to see the entire campaign in its final form when the game ships in just under a month. Superman Returns (Multi)

Star Trek Legacy (Multi)

After a hiatus of several years, Star Trek gaming returns later this year with Star Trek: Legacy, a starship combat game that bridges across all five Star Trek television series. In fact, publisher Bethesda Softworks recently announced that Legacy will feature the voices of all five Star Trek captains, with William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula reprising their famous roles. Your role in the game is to command Federation starships in action. You may start with a single ship, but eventually you'll be able to lead a squadron of starships, with the ability to take direct control of any vessel. Multiplayer will let you play as other factions, namely the Klingons, Romulans, and the Borg. For the newest details, we turned to lead designer Ian Currie of developer Mad Doc Software.

Gears of War and Midieval 2 are it for this month if I can get a little cash. GH2 will wait until it comes out for the 360. Between those 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Final Fantasy XII, and .hack//GU I should be pretty busy for the next six months or so.

Not to be a stickler (well, actually to be a stickler) but the Total War games are not RTS's.

The "Strategy" portion of the game is the opposite (turn-based) while the battle engine (tactics, for lack of a better word) is real time. So to be accurate we'd call it a "TBS-RTT" game, lol.

The only reason why I raise it is that I really prefer it that way - I mean who the hell wants to bother micromanaging a few peasants to repair your farms or gather wood when you're trying to engage in flanking attacks. By separating the empire building out from the actual battles I think you get a lot more realism.

I've been a HUGE fan of the Total War series ever since Shogun, came out, and wish it was more popular. In fact in a way I hate it because I'm still schlogging through Rome, which I love, I don't have enough life to waste on a whole new game....

Rome was a blast. I loved unlocking Macedonia and Greece so I could engage in my favorite form of warfare. Stack phalanxes to hold up the opposing army the flank my heavy cavalry around and smash them. The Romans didn't stand a chance.

Midieval 2 looks like a whole 'nother thing though. Castle seiges look epic. Hopefully assassins will be slightly easier to use then they were in Rome. I almost never had a successful mission.

Yeah, I've come to realize that some of Gamespot's genre descriptions aren't entirely accurate. If I think about it, I'll try to make a more fitting description (such as what I did with DOA Xtreme 2 ), but I'll forget to do that for some games.

I'll try to keep that in mind the next time a Total War game (or something similar) is coming out.

I'm surprised nobody else has mimicked the TW formula of massive battles featuring 10's of 1000's of individual units; that's just something you don't see in many conventional RTS games. Perhaps because it's become such a signature itself that it's impossible to imagine anything that woudln't be a total ripoff.

What I would love to see (aside from other historical variants of the TW formula, though most of the mods take care of that) would be one that expands the economic & empire building formulae to make them a little more realistic and less direct. Instead of building certain buildings in certain units and automatically getting certain troops and upgrades according to a rigid tech tree, for them to happen more "randomly" and amorphously. (I.e., you develop your military budget/recruiting in mountain areas, you get mountain-oriented troops after a few turns, or you build a university near a mining area, your chance of developing metallurgy increases, and build a barracks near it, you get armor upgrades, that you can export to all your troops for a fee).

I heard about the game a while back when it was announced as a 360 game, but the 360 version was canceled since then. To be honest, I haven't really followed it all that well, but I'm not really expecting the game to be all that good. Looking at the Gamespot page for it, 7 Studios is developing it, and the scores for their games at Gamespot aren't very good (ranging from 3.8 to 6.9). It might be a nice surprise though, and even if it has some flaws, it might be able to be enjoyable for fans of the series.

I didn't include it in the list, but the game is scheduled to be out on November 7th. If it gets some positive reviews, I'll try to make note of it in the thread.

Lookin' forward to Guitar Hero II; the girlfriend and I decided to try it while walking around Best Buy last night and we're both hooked!

It was amazing how easy it was to pick up and play but how you quickly get into some really cool combos. My girl (a non-gamer), on her first time, was gettin' so into it she almost started head banging in the middle of the store while hitting 25 straight!
