I can't debate with you which way gets you into Heaven but I think most studies have shown that strictly abstinence based programs are less effective than condom programs in regard to preventing AIDS or unplanned pregnancies.

And that's fine and very well may be true. However, in Africa, the programs aren't working because the culture is refusing to adapt to them.

And the fact remains the Church's main goal is going to be to get people into heaven, and so it's not going advocate a program that both puts people's souls in jeopardy and doesn't seem to be working in Africa. It's a simple and completely tangential point.

I agree that that is the Church's goal and I'm not going to argue they change it. Since doctrinally they can't and as a Non-Catholic it isn't my place to argue they change it. My disagreement though is whether that is the best strategy to combat AIDS in the wider marketplace of ideas.

True totally tangential and I apologize for not just starting a new thread.

"So, to summarize, killing prisoners is ok, as long as the Catholic church says it is? "Thou shalt not kill...unless they really reserve it, according to the Pope"? I must have missed that scripture."

Taking a cheap shot at the Pope, given his role in Catholic teachings, is mocking.

You really might want to read up on a faith before you attempt to discuss it. Such a thing might prove beneficial if you do not want to come across as mocking.

I think it speaks poorly of an institution if they invite the leader of the free world to speak at their institution and then have second thougths about it and think about rescinding the invite.

I mean, it's the freaking president. I wouldn't want Bush to be dis-invited to an event he was invited to. It doesn't make the president look bad, it make the school and the people look bad.

It shows intolerance. They may disagree. But to say, hey, you can't speak because we disagree with you - doesn't seem very American if you ask me. I'm not Christian, but I thought that Christianity was suppose to be more tolerant than Islam.

    Just goes to show.

The direct quote from Cardinal Avery Dulles was: "Catholics, in seeking to form their judgment as to whether the death penalty is to be supported as a general policy, or in a given situation, should be attentive to the guidance of the pope and the bishops."

This quote basically says when in doubt, just go with what the Pope says. Which is exactly what I said. So it's not mocking, it's the Catholic church's policy.

Oh, I've read plenty on the Cathlolic church. You might not want to misinterpret a fundamental disagreement about the principles of a faith as lack of information about that faith.

The pope may be the leader of the Catholic church but he is not THE church. The post that you replied to said that man is imperfect, and that was pope was a man...

You are making the same type of harsh generalization about this religion that are made about race, sex, etc.

When you let the decisions of a minority sum up your opinions about the majority you are being a bigot. And I know that that is not what you are.

Notre Dame never had any second thoughts. They said from day 1 that they wouldn't rescind the invite.

It was outside people asking ND to cancel the invite.

i dont think its cute that usually when someone makes a post about something strongly they get made fun of a lot of times.

much easier to post a bagillion times how something is stupid or wrong i guess.
