How long can ND coast on legacy before people stop caring? Maybe it's the senior citizens at ESPN who think they should keep covering them.
JACK SWARBRICK: You know, I get that question a lot about recruiting here, that it must be really hard to recruit at Notre Dame. In a sense it's not, because there's a self selection process that goes on. If you're a student athlete who's not really focused on both sides of that definition, we're not the place for you. You don't look at us. You don't come into the process. So we see a smaller number of kids and net out a higher number. http://www.ndsmcobserver.com/2.2757/catch-22-admission-standards-and-football-1.272750
When UT was playing Central Florida, I was like, isn't that the guy who was coach at notre dame for like a week.
RT @LanceMcAlister: UC sources tell WLWs Seg D. that Kelly told players few minutes ago he's leaving. Kerry Combs will coach sugar bowl
A fair amount do. Notre Dame had the number 2 recruiting class just a couple years ago. Its still at least a top 15-20 program in terms of recruiting.
I laugh at people that say Notre Dame can't get top flight talent to come there. They're currently #12 in recruiting rankings after three straight years of ND being bad to mediocre and Charlie Weis getting canned! Let alone that Weis got them in the top ten in recruiting more than once. Or that ND was able to beat out USC and Michigan for the #1 recruit in 2007.
i really really hope, kelly doesnt go to the banquet and announce it. obviously everyone knows by now, so the banquet already ruined. but at least pull all the players aside before it and tell em imo.
I am pretty sure that exclusive TV contract lasts for quite awhile longer. College football does seem to be changing though, the power house is still relevant, but so much more parity these days. People want to see the little schools now.
People, in general, don't want to see the little schools. That's why games involving the non AQC schools have been among the all time worst rated BCS games.
Sorry Jack, but my bull**** detector is going off, here is a list of just some recruiting targets from past years, who, according to Rivals, received scholarship offers from UND, and where they ultimately ended up: Pretty tough to say "we can't recruit the same players as powerhouses like OSU, Florida, USC, Texas, Oklahoma" - when you recruited the exact same players. And don't give me "self-select" - self-select means they have no interest in your school, if they had interest, then ND would be there in a second. LOL, That is a complete lie, Randy Moss got a scholarship to UND and signed a letter of intent, it was revoked after he beat the sh-t out of somebody in a riot in high school, and then he ended up at FSU, where he never played a down. Academics were the least of his issues. Even Palmer I am quite skeptical of, given UND's propensity to offer the exact same players as USC (see above), and fine, Duckett I'll give you. That's one guy. That's not the difference.
So is your opinion of the program that they can't get good recruits? Or that they have talent and just have had a bad coach?

Good move for Brian Kelly. Cinci was never going to get the top recruits and they don't have the big name or facilities to be a powerhouse. Kelly will make more money and have much better opportunities. That said, I think he's going to struggle. He's won on a smaller stage and with less recruits against lesser competition. That's a whole different ballgame from trying to recruit top tier talent and win under the bright lights. I'd like to see ND be good again (not much fun to hate them right now), but I think they really needed to go out and get someone who's proven they can recruit top-tier people and coach them up. That's why I thought Stoops would have been the perfect option for them.
What if UT doesn't get that second back.. Does Kelly leave for notre dame before a national title game? Now that would have been interesting...
Ok, I'm not saying ND is the perfect job. But I don't see how folks can't say it isn't a good job, as long as you can handle the pressure. Definately a step up from where he was at.
