If that's the case please tell me why we didn't win those games Howard didn't play. If that's the case why are we giving up 110 points with Capela starting. When has Capela locked down anyone down?
dude, what are you talking about? I looked up the rim protection stat for Dwight and he is not doing particularly well on that front either. Source : http://nyloncalculus.com/stats/rim-protection/ In fact, he seems to be doing worse than Terrence Jones, which I don't believe is the case, but as far as the numbers go, Dwight his not deterring much of the opponent shots as you so claim to. If anything, it seems like we are losing a lot more points when he is on the floor.
The bigger the detterrence index the better it is . His detterance is right now top 13 in Centers. Capellas is 11th from the bottom. You shouldn't compare PFs and Cs in rim protection UNLESS they are combo bigs. But TJ's rim protection numbers are pretty impressive for a PF (because the averages are different depending on position.).
You are clearly nitpicking here. Dwight trails Capela in all other categories including Opponent FG% when contested and points saved. In fact, Dwight is not saving any points for this team, the exact opposite is true.
I'm not nitpicking. Deterrence is EQUALLY important with FG%. It means that when an opponent sees Dwight at the rim they are scared and think again to go for the shot and pass out but when they see Capella they say oh good let's attack. The more the numbers of attacks the more the points the opponent team scores.
Not to mention that a) a player who plays against NON starters most of the time has better numbers and b) a player who plays few minutes adjusted per 36 boosts their numbers because it assumes they can keep up the production for all the time which isn't the case for noone.
doesn't matter. the point is not whether Capela is a better defensive player than Dwight is, but is Dwight still a defensive threat, and all the defense related stats point to otherwise. Given his yearly earning, he should perform at the defensive prodigy level since his offensive game is close to non-existent, and Dwight is just not producing enough for this team on both ends of the floor to help this team win and justify his salary.
And yet we're still allowing 110 points a game. Again these stats that you are posting are meaningless.
Doesn't have to do with scouting. It has to do with in how good position the c is when the guard (usually) attacks. Take for example Bogut and his great deterrence index. Or Duncan. A lot has to do with the defensive sheme. Take for example how Charlotte's bigs have pretty big deterrence index even though they are crap at actually FG%. (big al, cody zeller even Hawes who is really a joke). But when you compare players from the same team, and so the same defensive sheme then you can see who does his job better at being at the right place at the right time. Yes that's not the point between Capela and Howard. Capela is still very young and his stats shouldn't be held against him with such limited experience and ..well bulk too. Salary has little to do. A starting C usually is paid a LOT unless they are on their rookie extensions. Offensive game of a C as Dwight is dependant a lot on the guards and when the guards pretty much ignore him a lot of the time then what he should do exactly? Besides we are still in RS. The playoff Dwight is much better than early RS Dwight who can't play B2B because he has still health problems.
Losing 110 points does not mean we are losing 110 points in the paint or Capela is doing sub-par defensive job. In case you didn't know, we are horrible at defending perimeter players too. Not to mention that Capela has just started in 5 games and this is way too small a sample size to judge his impact on the game as a starter. Pretty much all the defensive advance stats say Capela is just as good a defender as Dwight is at this point, if not better. If you think otherwise, that's fine but just be aware that this is not my opinion. It's called facts.
We need to get a 3rd big up on here. When Capela starts and he goes out, you have Harrell out there playing Center.
Great post. Nicely correlates with what the posters who don't blame Harden for everything under the sun have been seeing. Dwight is no longer the rim protector and defensive anchor he once was in his Orlando days. Not surprising we had our best defensive season in the H&H era when he missed half the year.
The sad thing is that when Hakeem was Dwight's age, he was just hitting his prime. Dwight is clearly already heading downhill.
Question to Cyber or Clutch: I saw it during the clippers series...and have felt something was CLEARLY off. Why isn't this the same group? I know it has to do with Harden's behavior, but I really wonder what it could have been.
