The only thing McGrady needs is some additional training in Media Relations. That's it. You have to be careful what you say to the media. I have no doubt that there are many players who pack it in during a losing season, who have the urge to take a break during the middle of the season, who have problems off the court that are to the point of being unbearable, and who have chronic health issues that have them contemplating a vacation or retirement. No doubt at all (think about how many times you've heard people at work talk about quitting after their boss angers them once- and then don't go through with it). The difference is that they are savvy enough to keep it out of the media.

McGrady is not comfortable with speaking in public. You can tell by his responses- whereas a Kobe Bryant or Tim Duncan know how to respond to questions effectively (including the tough ones) and know what not to say, McGrady isn't there yet. Remember him saying that his fiancee had to help him with his speech in speaking with the media? From our standpoint, he just needs to learn what not to reveal to the media. Unfortunately, in our society and in the world of sports, you're just not going to get any sympathy when you talk about not wanting to show up to the arena or wanting to quit.

Was anybody listening to 610 in the morning today, at about 7:00 am?

There were talking about how Tmac was telling Barkley (paraphasing), "That my heart is not into basketball anymore", and "I really want to play baseball".

I caught the tail end of it, so I am not sure whether they were joking around or what.

Baseball? I'm sure they were joking about Jordan's excuse for retirement.

It was something like, I play basketball for a living, but I love baseball, and then they said that it should worry the Rockets because he has a very long contract, it didn't sound like they were joking, but I don't know sometimes with those two.

Well even all the jump-shooters run in the lane to get the jumper going. Tracy has to be the most impressive player I've ever seen becuz he his average 26 points off 90% jumpers, that's CRAZY!!!

If his back can't take basketball, it sure as hell can't take baseball.

You know its not like Tmac is having a bad year. I'm not understanding people who say he wants to quit because the going gets tough. Sure the team's record isn't what we would like for it to be, but when Tmac is in there and healthy, he carries this team, he is having a solid year overall, individually.

His shooting has been poor lately, could be his injury, could be the personal problems, who knows. I won't speculate until I know more about his personal issues.

I was also remembering those pics of him before the season started, looked like he bulked up and put on 20lbs of muscle, I wonder if that started the back problems, maybe his back couldn't handle the extra weight? I'm not sure I have seen anyone mention that on this bbs. Just a thought.

Listen, all of you who are dissing T-mac for this need to shut up.

I don't know what's going on and I haven't had depression, but I have had psycological issues (not specifying) and still haven't completely dealt with it.
In some ways, mental problems are the worst things to possibly have...and sometimes the best way to deal with it is just ot keep playing or whatever...but that doesn't mean you're going to be 100% so please just lay off.
And if he doesn't want people to know, it's his deal, all right, even my friends don't know. I'm only posting this here because it's anonymoust.

That's my point- I'd take a clinically depressed, unmotivated, slowed-by-injury T-Mac over 95+% of the players in this league. Would it be better to have Kobe? Maybe. How about Duncan? Possibly (although he has his own issues).

That's the point, really- it's OK to call him out, perhaps- but who are we going to get that's better?

There are many different ways to lead. Which leaders out there have a championship ring?

    Kobe Bryant
    Shaquille O'Neal
    Tim Duncan

And don't even tell me you're going to trade McGrady for any of the 5 Pistons or Parker or Ginobli, either. So we're gladly "stuck" with T-Mac. Fine. We just need the right pieces- I'm convinced of that. A few here, a few there, and we'll be fine. Really, regardless of what T-Mac says, I'm sure he and Ming will be around for another 5-7 years in Rockets uniforms. I have a feeling we will be where we want to be soon.

Didn't Yao said in the early interviews that if he was playing in the finals and his girl friend in china had some sort of crisis that he would drop everythig and be with her?

you guys are hilarious. give him the benifit of the doubt? why? he's already proven that when times get tough he can't handle it. you guys just totally ignore this guy's history.

edit: another thing, if you are gonna make excuses for your poor play, then don't half ass. no one feels sorry for you especially if you're gonna basically say I have issues and its my business so don't criticize me but I'm not gonna tell you what those issues are.

I believe most of the Rockets fans love TMac. Nobody said anything about trading him or wanting anyone else. It's a DISCUSSION. People fully understand as a super star, he is still a human, and he surely would have personal issues here and there. Since he's not a robot, those personal issues would affect his play from time to time, which is perfectly normal. People do understand that. What some of us do not agree, was the way TMac dealt with those issues. In my opinion, he needs to seek help from family, close friends, professionals, or management, coaching staff, or even teammates. I am sure he will get 100% support from those sources. Although those help might not be enough to deal with whatever serious issue he is facing now, he still needs to deal with it personally. What I do not agree is the fact that he talked to media about this, talked that on national TV, talked to Barkley about that. What's that for? Nobody said anything when he left the game for the birth of his baby, and I am pretty sure most of the fans won't have much problem if he needs to take some time off. But was it necessary to claim that on national TV? What did he want to achieve? To justify the recent slump? To gain sympathy from others? Every super star has slumps, no need to explain it, as long as you can come back to top form, it's just fine. Except for Rockets fans, nobody out there would be interested or caring about your personal issues, and they would only make fun of you. Why would you go out to tell them about that? TMac doesn't need this, and the Rockets doesn't need this. I don't think TMac handled it well this time. If you guys consider that dissing or bashing, if you guys cannot hear different voice or opinion about our top player, maybe you are asking too much.

i think the same too. some games he plays well and everything seems over. then some games he'll slump and it's his back or his personal problems. if his back really is that messy, then it souldn't even allow him to get back on the court at all. you're talking playing great basketball here that's very strenuous. and why would his doctors clear him to play with an unhealthy back?
