I was at the game, and it seemed like we didn't any mis-direction plays like Philly did to keep the defense off-balance, seemed like Chris Palmer was calling the plays again, between the tackle left then right, try a long 3rd down pass! Also, both teams had trouble running the ball but Philly went more to the pass to open the running game which I wished would have done especially in the 2nd quarter. Just my 2 cents...
so what did you see and/or not see that bothered/concerned you? i think a lot of people forgot how good the eagles are; they also forgot how bad the texans are. this is 2002, 2.0. it sucks, i know, but take the 7-win teat from your mouth - that was never realistic ever; they're going to have to almost completely rebuild this team from scratch. the D.C. con man and his band of merry dip****s left this team barren; there is not a lot of talent for kubiak to work with. you're going to have to accept progress in small doses; and carr yesterday was a major plus. if he builds on that performance and gets progressively better (they can win 9-11 games if carr plays like he did yesterday, assuming they fill the roster with more talent), i'll be much more encouraged than i was this time last week.
When I looked at the schedule closely some weeks back, I cringed as well. We will be lucky to win 4 games this whole season. That is okay because Cube is in his first year and the team is going through an overhaul. Next year, no more excuses.
I didn't get to watch the game, but on 610, the guys seemed to think the "trip" sack was caused by Flanagan (who apparently had a horrendous game) stepping on DC's shoes...anyone verify? I listened to the first drive (at church), then went to service...then came back and they were down 14-10 at the half. I was so optimistic too...
With a defense clicking on all cylinders it is. This team will get better... THIS season. Carr was good enough to win. And I could see Mario getting close multiple times to a backfield play! I'm pumped... remember this was against an Eagles team that looked pre-T.O. calibre on offense (remember they had multiple playoff wins and NFC conf. games before T.O.). With Dayne more ready/healthy, and some work on pass protection, the Texans can finish better than the Cowgirls. Just look at them yesterday! (AND THEY HAVE T.O.)
hard for me to put a finger on, ric. i just didn't come away impressed. i was glad he played better than he had. but i still don't get a sense of confidence from him. i realize, as i said, it's very subjective. i watched eli manning last night. i watched his team lose. but he looks like the leader out there. it looks to me like the team is with him. that they're behind him. that there is a sense of confidence. i just don't get that with carr. i guess i have a pretty high idea of what a day for a QB with a 100+ rating looks like...and that didn't feel like it. they scored on the first drive...they didn't score again. i know that's not ALL on carr.
fair enough. it's been a long four years. a "decent" outing doesn't change that. now you're dipping your toe in the unfair pool. carr isn't working with an 1,800-yard back; burress, toomer and shockey is a far suprior trio to anything carr's ever had as is coughlin and his coaching staff; and the giants have one of the best pass rushes in all of football and, as a result, a defense that holds a lot of teams in check and keeps its young QB in better field position and not always staring at a large deficit. i don't think eli's a fair comparison for carr. there's really no one who's a fair comparison - this is officially the worst expansion franchise in the last 30 years. as harsh as i've been on carr, he had no running game yesterday at all, a rookie LT who was overwhelmed and a rookie head coach who was outclassed by one of the best defensive coordinators of this era. under those conditions, i thought he played very well. i know there are 4 years of broken dreams and frustrations here, but i was encouraged by carr yesterday. you got to start somewhere.
Most of the sacks were due to blown blocking. Morrency had the most pathetic attempt at a block I've ever seen. he litteraly dived at his man who sidesteped to run full speed into Carr. Just aweful. And then our TE got blown by for another sack. Then there was the blind sided sack where carr never saw the 2 guys blitzing into his back. I would say Carr loooked much beter today. The team looked really good the first 1.5 quarters of the game. After that, we seemed too conservative. I did love that one LONG pass play carr completed to Johnson who was in 1on1 coverage.
all fair points, ric. i'm just frustrated by it all. but carr was the least of my concerns yesterday.
I wonder when the Texans will actually address the OL. The one thing that has consistantly been the downfall of the Texans is the OL. Using two 3rd round pics is not going to help us get better right now. Hopefully down the line one of these guys can develop, but we need help NOW. The only free agent OL offseason acquisition got cut before the season started. As long as they don't try to significantly upgrade our OL we will continue to lose games. And damn it was frustrating watching Carr having to dodge a lot of Eagles defenders while our DL played patty-cake with the Eagles.
when will people finally realize David Carr is just a good back qb???? Too many time I saw Carr antsy he needs to be poised ...which he is not.
It still bothers me that David Carr never sees the blindside pass rush coming. He stands there, checking receivers and BAM, he's nailed. If you watch better QB's, they have a sense for it and try to get away from it or get rid of the ball. With Carr's scrambling ability, he could make something out of those plays. Otherwise, I was happy with Carr's performance.
The loss was not on Carr. Not at all. My ONLY complaint with Carr as it always has been is that he throws the damn ball sidearm directly into defensive linemen and it gets batted down time after time in crucial 3rd down situations. He has at least 3 per game, does anyone else notice this? Or is it just me...
LOL - Heck yes we notice this....and so do opposing defenses. Joey Harrington....I mean David Carr just doesn't have it. DD
here, now, are 10 more insightful comments from dadakota regarding the 2006 houston texans. on gary kubiak - "he's no vince lombardi." on wali lundy - "he lacks the speed and power of an earl campbell." on andre johnson - "jerry rice was better." on owen daniels - "mike ditka was a more ferocious blocker." on the OL - "none of these guys could start for the '95 cowboys." on mario williams - "he'll never be confused with reggie white." on travis johnson - "he'd never see the field if randy white was on the same depth chart." on demeco ryans - "he won't have the same impact as lawrence taylor." on dunta robinson - "they'd pick on him constantly if he were on the same team as 'night train' lane in his prime." on the '06 texans - "the '72 dolphins would wipe the field with them."
DaDakota... just doesn't have it (when it comes to a fair assessment of NFL quarterbacks). DaDakota has been an NFL quarterback.
The loss isn't all on Carr, but he wasn't great either besides the first drive. If he continues to find Andre, he will be fine.
