Dictators are not all crazy suicidal maniacs, even if they do become that at their end, its not as though there is a magical red button which they can press to send off these missiles to kill the ememies....it involves a number of people who've got to make the process possible, I'm sure someone along the line would understand using these weapons would be suicide. Also, with dictatorships the power is usually witheld within a family, I'm sure the next power hungry freak wants to live through his era......it's not like the movies people, y'all have seen True Lies a few too many times :D

things change but at the same time remain the same.

although china is now trading partners w/ the us, japan, and sk, its still in their interest to keep nk propped up as a buffer.

there have already been several incidents between the us and china over international airspace and waters. china is rising on the international scene and it wants to "flex its military muscles." i guess they see east asia as their sphere of influence (a la monroe doctrine).

yes china is cooperating better but it still wants its space. sadly, the people of nk are paying for it.

if nk follows up on their threat, us response should hinge on how china reacts.

w/o china, nk would collapse on its own.

All of that is true with respect to China. In fact the only reason North Korea exists today is because China helped fend off the South Korean troops who were advancing North during the Korean War. In fact, pretty much all of North Korea's basic commodities such as fuel, heating oil, and ag products come from China. The rest is from international aid that comes every time Kim Jong Il starts pot banging. The refugee situation is a huge concern, and one that China wants no part of. But I can sense that they're growing a little uneasy with the madman, Kim.

Unfortunately, the U.S. doesn't have much leverage with China seeing as though we just begged them to buy billions of t-bills to help fund our stimulus bill. In fact, China owns such a large chunk of our debt, that they have the potential to cripple the Fed in one fell swoop if it so chooses.

Meanwhile, the best thing to do is the same as before. North Korea is just clamoring for attention. No reason to panic and do something crazy that would result in Seoul and Tokyo getting leveled.

Not that I disagree with you, but prior to the end of World War 2, the US and the USSR were trade partners and war allies. They needed each other to defeat fascist imperialism.

NK is a blackmailer, an extortionist, the exact same thing happens whenever they needs some attention/aid. Once the shake down is done, we will be back at the never ending 6 nations talk.

That's also why they probably will never give up the nuclear program,

China should put a sane dictator in charge in NK. That little Kim is just nuts.

Not possible. North Koreans have been brainwashed to love the "Leader" since they were born. He is their President, Commander in Chief, and Deity all wrapped in one.

Supposedly he is almost dead, some military general surely could take over.

We should let Japan off of it's leash. Tell them they can do "defense" actions with their F-2 and F-15's.

yeah but the problem is if japan were to make a preemptive strike, china would definately jump in to defend bc china and japan have bad blood.

if nk attacks us/japanese/sk ships then they have a right to defend. sink the nk ships but dont escalate further until china's intentions are fully understood.

First off defend what? Take out their launch sites and game over. Secondly, I doubt China really wants to tangle with Japans F-15J squadrons.

well japan's constitution prohibits military action. so that would be the first hurdle they would have to overcome.

it may seem like over kill to get involved over some missles or a nuclear fuel processing center. but you have to realize that there is a lot of really bad blood between japan and china. and would japan really want to start ww3?

Good one. Love the glasses. : )

As far as I've heard, one of his crazy sons is set to succeed him.

The latest numbers from the U.S. Treasury website show that China owns almost 1/4th of our national debt. If they decided to dump those securities en masse, imagine what that would do to our currency and the Fed's balance sheet. Just something to think about while you play with your GI Joe's.

Sure, we could print 100 trillion dollars and give it to everyone. Then you can buy a piece of bread for 300000k dollars. :D I wonder what would the inflation rate be? ;)
