Typical jock-frat behavior. More an assertion of self-importance than racism, but still very racist none the less. Idiocy.
No one made a big deal when they had the white themed party at work last week. We all had to dress up in slacks, full sleeve shirt, and some people even took it to an extreme by wearing a bowtie. They served red wine, and had little nuggets of aged Cheddar cheese served on crackers. Alot of the folks were talking in a very direct, pronounced manner and discussing things like the stock market, how hard it was to sew their child's elephant costume for the school play and how they got spotty internet access at their weekend house on the shore. Where is the outrage?

A noose is a symbol of a 400 years of forced inferiority of African Americans. It is a constant reminder that Blacks were killed just for being Black.
Focus should be on the noose. The parties themselves, as of now they happen all over and are more just stupid than inflammatory. A noose is like them putting a door of a holocaust gas chamber in the middle of the library, right after a mock Jewish party. If the country is going to keep pushing the racial melting pot concept, agree with that approach. Still, wondering out loud, what would be wrong with having a White student union even? People are always going to associate themselves with race. And will relate better to people of similar background and upbringing. As long as its not some hate group. If they're already doing these kind of tasteless events without being in any union, calling them the White student union is almost a formality.
Not to mention Jersey Shore themed parties are everywhere... ...I think the problem is that they described black girls as being loud and obnoxious which is getting off the "play" thing and into some legit racism.
The problem with that is it would be almost impossible to have all the interests of minorities properly represented in a single student union. UC San Diego already has a single student union that deals with budgetary concerns, referendums on campus space use; this A.S. is made up of representatives of every major student group, every college, and so on. The Black Student Union caters specifically to the needs of the tiny minority of 1.3% of students at the university, making sure that they even have a voice at the table. To everyone who doesn't think this is a big deal; UC San Diego already has a very hard time recruiting low socioeconomic groups and students of color; I believe that their own findings saw that only 13% of black students accepted actually matriculate at the school; so clearly, this does matter to potential students. To the people who believe that it isn't worthy of attention and protest; doing nothing sends the message that such actions are culturally acceptable, and that those disenfranchised by these things don't care. That's been the traditional Asian-American response to things like this, and I'm extremely happy that black students haven't shown such disinterest and passive acceptance.
You people have no spines. Why are people only bothered by the noose? The whole letter is an outrage and an absolute travesty. It's clearly meant to create a false sense of superiority by mocking blacks in a derogatory manner, considering it's being done in honor of black history month. If I was black, I would take a couple of my boys there and walk around calmly staring at the white folks and taking pictures of them with my hands in my pants. Creeping them out and turning the tables on them, rather than being provoked. This is the Art, of Ronny warfare.
As I have said in this thread, I just don't care for clubs and organizations based on a persons race. I think Colleges and Universities in particular should work to bring different types of people together. In reading the article, I found it rather sad that there are student organizations based on race. It's been a number of years since I've been in college, and I guess I was hoping that maybe these types of organizations were a thing of the past. As I said earlier, the fraternity was wrong, and I wouldn't mind seeing the fraternity banned.
The noose part is very racist and they should be harshly disciplined specifically for that action. However the ghetto theme itself I have a hard time accepting the claim that it is racist. There are people of all races that act and dress ghetto. That in itself does not make the party racist.
