GATER- My recollection says that players with even the chance of free agency (team/player options) can't be traded around draft time. There was something similar with Brad Miller.

I'm fairly confident Stoudemire, Borchardt, Marcus, Ely, or Nene will be at 15. Most likely Ely IMO, though I wouldn't be too surprised if Stoudemire slipped. Non-bball related things dropped Loren Woods to round 2 last year, and I'm curious to see how it affects Stoudemire-tons of issues in HS, and that he had no chance of going to play in the NCAA even 2 years ago because of the amount of violations he likely already has. Injury bug could put Marcus there. If we miss on Ming, I'd want Borchardt next between the 5s-very complementary skills to Cato.

    Cannot agrue with that Nike.

I wanted to restate a draft proposal I had earlier to get poster reaction. Trade #15 and KT to Miami for #10. My logic is #5 and #10 and Tmo will more than offset the risk associated by losing KT who we would probably not be able to afford very soon. That risk is further reduce if MoT come back like he was the first year, at least. #5 and #10 would almost guarantee us top flight talent where we need it most. WHy Miami? I believe they are like NJ of last year. They need players.

You do understand that since both are over the cap, the Rockets and Heat must exchange relatively equal contracts, right? The Heat have no one near KT's $1.5m contract and they can not resign any FA's (for S&T purposes) until after the draft.

There appear to be too many CBA obstacles to what you are trying to accomplish.

The Heat have a press conf scheduled for today and reports are that Zo may retire...does anyone with any cap knowledge know how that would affect them salarywise? Would they have to apply for the injury exception? Would that make them the least bit interested in Mo or Cato and the 15 for the 10? I could be way off base here...im just thinking out loud

    Total payroll $52,916,216

Gater, I am not sure how this works. Here is Miami's payroll. Quite a few are FA this year who they would want to keep next year. I would think that they could sign and send Kendall Gill, for instance. If we forget for the moment about ZO possible retirement and its effects, could the teams have an arrangement where Miami picks Houston's choice and Houston pick Miami's choice and then sought out the FA's stuff and finalize the trade after the draft.

Would the Heat get a medical exception worth $10 million or so? About half of Zo's salary?

Maybe we can send Rice home! Whoo hoo!

    Sorry...it got away from me.

If Zo retires...and we don't know he will...Pat Riley might as well just let the voicemail pick up all the messages.

    DearRock -

    1) Draft picks have $0 value in a trade when unsigned.
    2) When signed, draft picks can not be traded until Dec. 15th.
    3) Unless one or both teams are under the cap, draft day trades of contracted players must be approximately equal (send and return values).
    4) It is either against the CBA, a bad business policy or both to trade for a player who has an expiring contract and will become a FA this summer (July 1). Trading for Kendall Gill leaves you vulnerable as he will become a FA on July 1 and can be resigned by anybody after July 18th or so.

I hope this helps. It took me awhile to grasp it (thanks again, NIKE). I have a similar response further back about why it is almost impossible to S&T on draft day for Rashard.

Trading for Kendall Gill is only to facilitate the trade, I have no place for him on the team so he can go. The aim is to move KT and improve the #15 pick. I remember last year that trades were announced but would take effect after July 1 or something like that.

I agree with #1 and #2 and I am expecting that if each team picks the other choice and then trade before signing, then that works. For #3, I am understanding you to say that we can trade KT for Kendall because they have close to the same value and are under contract, at least to July 1, in Gill's case. So the only problem would be #4 which I would say, I do not mind if he walks since my intent her is to get #5 and #10 in the draft and move KT because we will lose him sooner or later. With those two picks, I can easily forget about losing both Gill and KT. Does that make sense?

Of course it would not work if it is actually against the CBA rules to trade a player with an expiring contract any time during or after the draft before July 1, 2002. What would be the justifcation for that if the CBA, on the other hand, allows trades of expiring contracts as late as Feb or March, the trading deadline.

From Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ:

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#73

    79. When can't a player be traded? Can players be given "no-trade" clauses in their contracts?

    . . . .

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

    . . . .

When the player is playing under a one-year contract and will have Larry Bird or Early Bird rights at the end of the contract.

    . . . .

The fourth bullet item above (players with one-year contracts can't be traded if they will be a Bird or Early Bird free agent) has an interesting implication. If a player has a two-year contract, but the second year is an option year, then the league treats it like a one-year contract and does not allow the player to be traded. If the option is exercised and the contract becomes a true two-year contract, then the player is tradeable. The Phoenix Suns had to exercise their team option on Corrie Blount before trading him to Golden State on 1/26/01.

Anyone else hear anything about a press conf concerning Zo? I could have sworn that I heard that this morning.

Lewis is a great player, but he would demand something close to the max , if we would be lucky enough to get Y.Ming our next move should be trading Mooch,Kt and the 15 Pick for C.Butler. If we would get another great rookie we would save a lot of money for the next 4 years and Butler could even become a better player than Lewis , he is already an excellent defender and people are comparing him to P.Pierce , I think that if we could get him and Y.Ming we could make a serious run for the championship next year.
