Still one of the greatest seasons in Rockets history, and my personal favorite, excepting the championship runs. Talk about a deep team. If Van Gundy had that kind of talent on the bench, we'd still be playing.

He'll want at least the full MLE and the Rockets have more pressing needs than a backup behind TMac and Batts.

Yes but Avery Johnson was groomed to replace Nellie for almost a year. Add to the fact that Dallas had all the pieces of the puzzle beforehand and never had to trade for players or anything. Mavs were already a deep playoff team that Nellie built and AJ only took over after the much publicized dispute between Nellie and Cuban.

The Rockets are in a completely different position because we don't have a natural heir to JVG maybe Tom Thibodeau but Les didn't want any relics from the JVG era. He wants a completely different apprach with a new brand of basketball. Also the Rockets are looking make some major changes in the offseason. I don't see how a Mario Elie comes in to the picture espcially since we a have 2-3 year window to win and no time to go through the pains of a rookie coach.

    UPDATE: Van Gundy Fired
May 18 - Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was fired Friday. The Rockets went 52-30 last season but lost to Utah in the first round of the playffs. Van Gundy led the Rockets to a 182-146 record in four seasons.

The Rockets offered Jeff Van Gundy a job Thursday. It was not necessarily as coach.

While still holding out the possibility he might return as coach, the Rockets made it a bit easier for Van Gundy to leave the bench, offering him a different position in the organization.

GM Daryl Morey would not specify what post he offered after many talks Thursday with Van Gundy. Van Gundy has not accepted or turned down that position. -- Houston Chronicle

    - Van Gundy, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, told Rockets owner Les Alexander last week: "I know you have problems with my coaching style. You ought to look around and see if someone is out there you'd rather have coaching your team."

Alexander apparently wants more of an up-tempo, Phoenix Suns style of play, and Van Gundy is uncertain that a team with Yao Ming can play that way. He's a defense-first coach. -- Houston Chronicle

    - The Post also has learned the Rockets soon will announce Rick Adelman as their new coach. -- New York Post

Its going to be Adelman. Its a good hire considering the personel we have. Remember the kings had Vlade the chain smoker as their center, the princeton offense isn't about running like Phoenix. Don't be misled by Les' comments about an more up-tempo offense like Phoenix, we probably will score more points, but it wont be from running all game long.

I can also see why the rockets only looked at Adelman as their only prospective coach. The sooner the rockets hire a head coach, the sooner the new coach can start putting his imprints on the team. Once it's official Adelman can start working with the current players on what hes going to do and what he will expect of the players. Adelman would also be able to give Morey his input on personnel decisions, so our GM knows what hes looking for sooner rather then later. Adelman would pretty much have the entire offseason to do whatever he needs to do instead of a month later if he had a long drawn out process of hiring a new coach.

I'm not sold on a 60 year old retread coach for the Rockets. JVG killed Yao's passing ability by having posted up one on one ala Pat Ewing

Adelman is not a sure hire.

I'm sure they will do an extensive search...

    I hope so.

I remember from those years when the kings were good and seemed to eliminate the nash, finley, nowviski (sic) Dallas team every year in the playoffs it was mainly because of all the easy layups and fastbreak points they got off steals. I think that only with the addition of 2 guards who are competent at running a fast break and capable of penetrating just a little (maybe v-span and someone we bring in), the rockets would be the sort of team that can alter its style of play dramatically depending on what would be best to beat their opponent.

To hell with a coaching search if you already know who you want. Saddle up and go get him.

BTW, JVG told Les that maybe he should check out other coaches before offering him keeping him around plus he gave Adelman his blessing.

If JVG really wanted to coach the Rockets he should have told Les that not only was he still the best man for the job but he did not want Les looking elsewhere because he definitely wanted to return.

With no addition at power forward, do you see JHo being a much bigger piece of the offense and regain his starting position. I think JHo is a much better fit at power forward than Chuck Hayes.

Thats why if they select an old experienced coach possibly it might be to act as a caretaker coach for a year while his younger assistant trains and gets hold of the way Les wants things to be.

Agreed- It was fun watching how Hakeem- Akeem could dominate and put fear in the other team. All Feared him. Sampson was 7' 3" + with point guard skills. Rodney McCray could run the break with anyone. If the games had been fairly called in Boston-who knows - but that the Rockets could have won a championship. Lrry Bird cried everytime someone looked at him and a foul was called. there has never been more contact thant McHail and Parrish slappping hakeem and Ralph-they got away with murder!!!!.

    Loads of fun!!!

I was referring to centers who played under Adelman.

Almost coach of the year? He finished 4th. Granted, I though he should have won. But "almost" means finishing at least second.

I actually think Rockets management is chosing Adelman because of the fans. The poll here in clutchfans clearly showed him as the favorite. I voted Larry Brown. But I think any change will be good, regardless of the coach.

There is no doubt that JO is a much better PF than Chuck offensively. However, JO's lack of defensive ability often left Yao and the paint exposed. What's more, there is no offensive big man coming off the bench for rox. You'd be happy if Deke/Chuck can give you 10pts combined. Let's hope rox can bring in a much better PF or backup C in the offseason (Yi please! :D ).

i'm skeptical that any of you ever used the word "great" to describe Adleman before his name became connected to the Rockets recently.
