JFK provoked war in Cuba, a country that was geographically closer and more culturally and socially aligned with US than Vietnam ever would be. He blocked re-unification elections and knowingly allowed the South Vietnamese leadership to be assassinated. All of these guys were crippled with postwar anti-communism and a lingering quasi-colonial Euro-centrism that precluded them from making strategically or ethically sound or even marginally forward-thinking decisions regarding non-Western countries.

Your Cheney analogy is transparently partisan. He was Bush 41's Defense Secretary when communism fell and during the first Gulf War, which prevented a brutal dictator from conquering the Middle East and cornering the world's oil market, and was fully aligned with America's and the rest of the developed world's permanent strategic interests.

Not sure how adhering to a political philosophy forty years removed from the events being discussed is a relevant charge.

Kennedy's administration was fully aware of the coup that led to the assassination. My original assertion: that Kennedy, along with all other Presidents during the Vietnam era, made decisions that indisputably worsened the situation, still stands.
