Hurry up, Ill price as right you. Just play it non-stopped, skip our game this week and take it to work and sneak it on that one tv.
I'm finally starting to get sick of Wii Sports. It might be time to buy a real game. Would this be the first one I should buy? Is it expensive? Is there any extra hardware I need to play it?
well worth it. Buy elebits, i bet you can get it for cheap. also Resident Evil 4 is only 20 or 30 bucks
Okay, I got Super Mario Galaxy today, and I just played it for an hour or two. (Pretty great, so far.) However, now I feel all dizzy and have visions of Mario running around a sphere. Has this happened to anyone else? Ugh, I think I need to lie down now.
http://wii.ign.com/objects/824/824989.html basically a hide and seek game. You have a gravity gun and search out little creatures called "elebits". You use the IR and point to object and pick them up using your gravity gun. For example; you may be in the kitchen and you have to find X amount of elebits. You will have to open draws, open the frig, open the pizza box on the counter, shake the vase, etc etc to capture elebits within a time limit. Sounds weird and boring...i thought the same thing, but it is a dang fun game and was the 1st game other than wii sports i played. It made me a believer in the endless options of motion/IR control. Great game. Simple. Fun and addicting. oh thats just the beginning. Wait until 20 stars or so...you will be dreaming of mario
How long did it take you guys to beat the game? I'm finally getting a chance to play this game a month after buying it. Can't wait.
I rented this game Saturday afternoon and have 22 stars so far IIRC (a few stars in the 3rd dome/galaxy/whatever, just after the 1st encounter with Bowser). Does it get better after this? So far, I haven't really been hooked into the game. I'm not really into platformers (the latest R&C being an exception, although it probably doesn't compare well to most platformers), so I don't know if it is that or if maybe the game really picks up after the first 4-6 hours or whatever.
Didn't know you had a Wii. If you aren't really 'into' platformers I'm not sure what you are expecting. It doesn't 'get better' - it's already one of the best there is. R&C isn't really a platformer.
I was thinking that maybe SMG would change my mind since it seems to be the best (or one of the best) out there (and this probably applies to more than just platformers). Technically, it isn't so much that I don't like platformers, but that I haven't really bothered with any since Mario 64 (which I enjoyed of course). The few I've played since then haven't really left much of an impact on me. I've always thought of R&C as a platformer, but your probably right about that clarification. I definitely enjoyed the shooting and RPG-esque elements of the game more so than the actual platforming. Although if you just kept the platforming elements, I'd probably still enjoy the game quite a bit. Or just take SMG's gameplay with R&C's story/characters/humor/etc.
Yeah, I really like R&C's humor. It makes it a fun game to play. Although it does have more 'story' than say an average Mario game, it's just barely above that. More than anything it's just a reason to go to a new planet and blow **** up. (not that I really need more reasons to do that. Just going to the new planets is a blast). I've read enough of your threads to know that you have very specific tastes (and understand why you've stuck with primarily just Playstation for so long), and as such a lot of those elements aren't present in many other genres. Most of what you like seems to apply to more JRPGs than anything else, with a mix of action tossed in. That's not really going to apply to most platformers. However, as just a game player, I think I really have to marvel at a lot of the things SMG does right. Obviously platformers are one of the first genres I played years ago, so there is that link there, but overall there are several aspects of Galaxy that go beyond that; level design, controls, music. Bringing something new and fresh to platforming is an achievement in of itself. Stuff like that is universal, IMO. Heck, it is a wonder in level design. That alone is worth appreciating.
This is probably true, although I felt like it was becoming less so in recent years. I used to play mostly RPGs only, but I've had a lot of fun with games like Lumines, Gran Turismo, Burnout, Gripshift, GTA (it has a story, but not really why I play it), etc. I finally played Guitar Hero (3) recently, which I never really had much interest in, but I really enjoyed that too. I'm not sure why I can't get into platformers (or at least the platformers I've played); I haven't really had much problems getting into great games in these other genres that don't really share much in common with RPGs. They may not be my favorites (due to the lack of story, character development, etc.), but I still really enjoy them nonetheless. For some reason, those things weren't impressing me that much, or at least I probably wouldn't have thought anything of them without reading this thread. Maybe due to my lack of experience with other platformers since Mario 64 or something (except for the music, which even though I enjoy, is basically just playing off of nostalgia for me, similar to the music in some FF remakes/spin-offs/etc.). I'll definitely try to get to that point in the game, if not further (should probably be able to "beat" it if only ~60 stars are needed).
That's too bad; those aspects of it are really top notch. I'm not one to care about single reviews, as I've said before, however this is a case where the overwhelming majority of reviews (professional and others) are glowingly positive for a reason. Just very impressive all the way around. I kind of approach platformers as a 'total' experience. One of the great things about Galaxy is you are looking at some crazy levels, with so much stuff going on, while adding in a nice mix of classic gameplay. Say, for example, the Battle Rock Galaxy. You are running around (both over and under) a spinning platform while traps spin around the edges, a huge battleship is shooting at you, more traps are flying past the surface of the platforms, you're jumping and fighting AND you're collecting coins and stars all at the same time. And while all that is happening, awesome music is playing in the background and the controls are perfect. It's like you get in a zone; a friend of mine was watching me play and is like 'how the hell are you doing all that?' It didn't seem like I was doing anything superhuman; just trying to stay alive. It's really a great experience. It's probably just a lack of familiarity with the genre in general. In reality, there hasn't been anything this well done since Mario 64. So, if it's any consolation, you haven't missed too much.
Well, I got this game for my son this last Christmas, but I only finally started playing it a couple weeks ago. Damnit if the game hasn't hooked me. I've been playing a little just about every day and I'm up to about 94 stars now. The comets runs are fun...except the Daredevil comets. Those are meant to be challenging, I know, but good lord they can be frustrating. Took me like 20 tries, but I finally beat the Floating Wizard dude daredevil comet run, on the ghost ship. I think the Matter Splatter Galaxy wasn't about the coolest level design I have ever seen. I wish they had done more than one star in that galaxy. Do I have to fight the final Bowser fight in before I can get all 120 stars or can I get all of them before I challenge his ass?
I can't remember exactly how many stars you need in order to fight Bowser the final time...I played through the game very methodically, getting every last star in an observatory before moving onto the next one. So by the time when the counter appeared in the center of the spaceship, I had already had more than enough stars to fight bowser. You do have to beat Bowser before you can go after the purple coins stars...which are hard as hell. The purple ones, with the exception of a few, are the only stars I didn't get (I opted to finish Burnout instead). I loved the game, it was definitely immersive and the galaxies were creative. But at times I felt the game followed to much of a linear path and a lot of the planets were on the small side. So in that context, I felt it came up short when compared to Mario 64. Still it was a definite successor to that game following the subpar Sunshine.
You have to fight Bowser after 104 stars (I think), then watch the credits roll (again- i think you have watch credits here- maybe not) and at the end of the credits get the purple coin comet unlocked. Then get the rest of the coins for 120 total, and defeat bowser again and watch credits again to unlock something else.
I bought this game as a gift to my buddy and after playing for a while I can safely say that this game is AWESOME! It gives me the same kinda feeling that Mario 64 gave me. It's fun, cool, and adds a new dimension to the game, the same way Mario 64 did by making a fully 3-D world. If you have a Wii buy this game!!!! I totally eat crow by thinking this game wasn't going to be great, or along the same lines as Sunshine (which sucked!)
