I played this at best buy today. I think I said earlier that I only liked the side scroller Mario's and never liked Mario 64 or Sunshine. But this was ****ing sweet. I am buying this ASAP. Best Buy was sold out.
whenever I see one on the map I drop what I'm doing and go to that galaxy to do the challenge. yeah, that's essentially what it is though. there's one type of comet that just gives you a 4 minute timer and you have to do a speed run through the first star. another, you race a mirror mario to a finish to get a star. my favorite so far is you have to beat the level with 1 health (usually makes you fight the boss I believe). I'm almost at 30 stars I think, I don't intend on beating the game with less than 120 (if it is avoidable).
This thread has convinced me to try and get a Wii for my 12 year-old son, who is a Mario fanatic. If not, I'll get a PS3. I'm now convinced the Wii will be sufficient for 1.5 to 2 years before a PS3 will be needed. By then, there should be enough PS3 games to make it a compelling purchase. If I'm lucky, great games for the Wii will be pouring in and make it a moot point.
I had bought Madden 08 Wii for my room but only played it a few times on my crappy tv. My roommate borrowed Madden 08 for his 360 and we played it on the HD in the living room. I decide to pop in the game for Wii outside and it looked horrible on the big screen...like playstation graphics. Enough of a distraction where I had to trade it in (28 bucks--not too shabby) along with 5 other games for a total of 80 bucks....guess where most the money went? See, games on the Wii can look beautiful. At first I thought it was a bit shallow in the first few levels and didn't get the hype. Just picked up my 24th star and I just absolutely love the level designs. It's almost something new every planet.
I don't know how I missed this earlier. that's pretty funny. I agree. It really shows (along with games like MP3 and - from all the screens I've seen - Smash Bros Brawl) what you can do with the system if the effort is put in. Combine that with a good use of the unique controls and there are plenty of good gaming opportunities.
It started off kind of kiddy but has picked up alot later in the game. The level design is amazing. The guys at nintendo spent more than just acouple of months on the project
I bought a Wii this morning along with Super Mario Galaxy. I am officially done with Christmas shopping. After searching around the internet, I can't remember ever seeing a game so universally acclaimed as this one.
You'll be happy with your purchase. I'm one of those people who has always loved video games but as I've gotten out of college and whatnot, I've had less time for them. When I do sit down to play one, I start thinking "man...I'm a bum, I should really be doing something more productive". That said, I must've played Mario Galaxy for 8 hours yesterday. One thing though is that, like other Nintendo games, it starts out really easy so you can get adjusted. I've now found a little less than half the stars in the game and it's a freaking blast at this point and has been for some time.
The music and visuals are what make it an awesome game. Plus the controls. But its just that classic Mario music that takes you way back
fighting the tree on daredevil mode is working over my nerves. Other than that on at 55 stars but i still have several untouched planets...i'm just knocking out all the stars I can on the first few galaxies. I got the Green Star working last night...think i will check out that area tonight. p.s. the sand stages are very cool!
I gave my kids their game to make it easier on me this past rainy weekend. I have to play it with them its so awesome.
The great thing is for the grown ups, if you don't want to give up the main gameplay, just give the kids the second remote and they can help you pick up stars or freeze enemies for you!
"daddy, can i actually move mario around" "No son. you are doing just fine making me jump higher and collecting stars"
120 stars, all done! I had a lot of free time during the Thanksgiving break, and I ended up playing for 22 hrs (around 30 hrs total to get a 120 stars)... . The game is like crack. It's funny because I play a lot of games, and the most I usually play for is about an hr or two at a time. You get past a certain part, and it feels exhausting and you want to save it and close. With Galaxy, you just can't put it down, and want to keep on playing. The level design in the game is unmatched with any before it. 100 stars in, and the game was still hitting me with new and unique gameplay mechanics to get stars. It NEVER got repetitive. That's a tough task to do considering the goal of the game is to collect 120 stars. It's not too hard to get 60 stars and beat the game (the Bowser fights and most boss fights were all amazing btw), but it is pretty damn challenging to get all 120 stars. Some of the later galaxies and the purple comets make the game downright hard at times. Hard, but never frustrating. You always want to go back and try again if you die. It's fun each time! This is the sequel to Mario 64 that Sunshine wished it was. In fact this game blows Mario 64 away as well. It's like Mario 3 was to Mario 1 as Mario Galaxy is to Mario 64. Galaxy brings some amazing new powerups to the franchise as Mario 3 brought. When you play some later levels like Toy Time Galaxy, you'll know what I mean. I feel I'm pretty picky about games, and rarely does one come along that completely blows me away. Well I haven't enjoyed a game this much since 1999 with Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Mario Galaxy just topped Metroid Prime and Halo1 for my 2nd favorite game of all time. I didn't think it would be that good, but it seriously is. Funny thing is that I have 120 stars, and have Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect sitting there waiting to be played, but I just feel like playing Galaxy all over again. The main reason for that is because of the reward you get for getting 120 stars... Spoiler You get to freakin play as Luigi! He controls different, jumps different, and so a lot of the game feels different while playing with him. Plus it's classic to see Luigi in the Bee suit. . If you get 120 stars with him, you get an extra galaxy for a 121st star! Overall, this is easily GOTY, and more like GOTFD (Game of the Freakin Decade)!
A friend of mine told me that he bought the game and didn't like it. He said it was repetitive and by his definition that means that he feels like he's done all the things in this game, in games that came before. He then went on to tell me that he's not the only one that feels this way, because his friend does too. Since they're more hardcore gamers than I am, he claimed that they knew what they were talking about and I don't. However, I was as big a gamer all through my childhood and I'll be damned if I don't know what a good game is. I cited clutchfans, saying that I knew of at least a dozen people who love the game. His response was that "those people" don't know games. I was just curious what some of you guys thought of that. Do you find the game repetitive (and if so, enough to say it's not a good game?). Are you all just clueless gamers?
There's a reason it's one of, if not the highest rated game of all time score wise across different gaming sites. At first I thought it was repetitive, but I love the level designs. I dunno, for me, I feel every galaxy offers something new. I'm never bored with them.
