I am pretty sure you can remain a committed fan and still thoroughly resent what management is doing or not doing for the team.
I have to wonder though if that isn't a symptom of the modern sports fan. With talk radio and blowhards like Stephen A. and PTI all over the airways, it seems like it is fashionable to hate the teams you are supposed to love. Fans are getting more vitriolic all the time. You watch reports about fans unleashing neverending tirades of curse words on players, spitting on them, throwing things at them. Sure, there has always been a DEGREE of this, but with the anonymity of the web and talk radio, it just seems to be stoking the flames. I sometimes wonder if people are really fans or if they just live to hate on the teams they claim to love. It's as if teams can do no right when, in the past, they could do no wrong. I wonder why the anger seems so personal and the hate seems so prevalent. The Astros trade for Huff and you'd think they just sent Clements to the Yankees for cash. As much as I HATED the Texas not taking Bush, fans swearing they'd never watch them again? That's a little much. Just seems extreme for a game.
That is exactly why I prefaced my comments with competant vs. blowhard poster comment. I believe I am educated and literate enough to tell the difference. This is a different feeling I'm getting than the usual blowhard trash talk.
Ditto. Jeff, we are not spreading hate. We are voicing our opinions loudly and clearly in hopes that Rockets management gets the message. Personally, I believe it is time to rid the team of JVG. I don't hate him, but I do not believe he is a good fit for the team because his string-pulling is a detriment.
I seem to recall a few years back...it was the "realists" vs the "pollyannas" and just like then.....you cant just group everyone into two little cubbyholes... 3PO is closest to my opinion as far as the curent state of the board, and jeff is dead on as far as my attitude towards the team. I dont understand what they are thinking as far as their apparent lack of activity, but I aint going apesh*t over James(since I dont beleive he ever intended to come back unless we got on our knees for him)...and I understand why Battier(eventho I cant help but feel we deserved a *little* more back for what we gave)....but I will not giveup hope nor will I waste what little free time I have blasting them to hell and back. Win or lose....richer or poorer(talentwise)....this IS my team...and I dont give up till the last second of that last game of the year. a real shame so many "so-called" Rockets fans feel the need to act the way they are lately. Blasting the team you claim as your favorite just cause you think you know better than they? the height of arrogance
O M G r U serious? What a bunch of gm wannabees whine and b**** about on the internet has ZERO...let me repeat that so there is no misunderstanding....ZERO chance that guys who get paid to do this are gonna make changes based on what we say... No way. to think otherwise is just making up excuses for blasting them. damnit...I used up this afternoons freetime actually posting... I hope I dont miss any real news cause of this.
That's why the poll question states "To which camp are you more closely allied? As I said earlier, my goal in this is to moderate views (mine included) by having to choose one extreme or the other and, of course, to have a little "fun" in so doing. And yes, A_3PO's answer is where we all should be...more or less.
I'm agree. Being a fan shouldn't mean that you have to check your head at the front door. I've been very unhappy with the direction of this team for years now but every season, I still pony up and buy NBA League Pass so I can follow the Rockets. It will be the same this year. I happen to think that all of the anger and unhappiness being vented are actually good things because they show that a lot of folks still care enough to get worked up over the Rockets. And that's a good thing.
Most of the posters in GARM are childish and downright stomach turning in their remarks and attitudes towards the team, I seriously think they would be happier rooting for whoever is winning that year, IMO we don't need their kind here, it makes the board trash and you have to wade through the trash to find any actual quality left around here. Back in the day, I was happy lurking and reading the educated and well tohugh out posts of guys like Jeff, Heypartner and others, nowadays it is more ESPN BBS drivel than anything else, little to no decent content in the GARM whatsoever.
First let me say I appreciate the thread and the thoughtful comments I've seen from Jeff, A3PO and others. And, since the waning days of Rudy and the arrival of JVG I have been "more closely" associated with the Nihilists than the Sycophants simply because I've never had much faith in Van Gundy. Having said that however, whenever the Rox have done something I agreed with like trading SF for TMAC and bringing James from Milwaukee, as well as their near first round victory over Dallas season before last, I have been among the most ardent of supporters. I am one of those fans who can't help but allow the daily successes and/or foibles of "MY ROCKETS" to affect my mood and my attitude toward them in the short term. Having said that, nothing the Rockets do, (short of shipping out Yao and TMAC for two more "JVG" type players) will ever keep me from rooting... nay -living and dying with them in each and every win and loss in this and every season down the road!!! I'm with Jeff in the sense that nothing any of my favorite teams do will dictate what happens in other areas of my life, but invariably, when I come to this board of late, it seems like we've had nothing but bad news to digest, and yet our GM's seem hell bent on shooting themselves in the foot, thereby causing me/us even more distress. There! See, I'm capable of discussion without vitriol. (But hey, sometimes a guy's just gotta vent )
I am not alarmed at all, as we are talking about role players, as long as we have Tmac and Yao healthy, and now Battier, we got a great chance to compete. DD
Rockets2K, no disrespect meant, but are you serious? If you own a business, do you want to know what your customers think about your product? Will their opinions influence the color, cost, features, etc.? Yes, I seriously believe they read ALL the opinions posted here because this is their core fan base. Why do you think there is such a stream of management rationalizatons for their actions? Yes, board members get extreme but passion is at the very core of fandom. We all, secretly or openly, hope we exert a modicum of influence on the overall course of the team.
I won't take it quite as far as you, but it is A LOT more difficult to find quality content now. "Back in the day" most of the threads and comments were pretty solid. Of course there were some knuckleheads who hijacked threads and posted a lot of drivel that contributed to nothing. They were the exception. Last summer was great because we had passionate debates about free agents that was mostly thoughtful discussion. But it has really dropped to a new low this summer. I don't even bother reading most of the threads now. It's like Clutchfans has been invaded.
Now I'm curious. Do you and Summer Song Giver consider this a useful, explorative thread or a knucklehead, drivel thread?
I'll let out a little secret here. People are mad not because you don't like the Rockets or they actually want to root for other teams. They are mad because they care deeply about this team. People are dissatisfied not because they think we have a crappy team of no hopes. They are disssatisfied because they know we have a solid core and pretty good team, and have a chance to be great.
Dude, nobody has a vendetta against the rockets here...we're just expressing displeasure at what management has done this yr...i dont see whats wrong with that especially considering that after all this is entertainment and not a faith based religion
All Rockets fans are family. You can pick on Rox, so can I and any other Rox fan. Just because we're picking on them doesn't mean we don't love them any more. Like michecon said, we're angry because we care and we hope they can do better.
