There are plenty of things I like that are unoriginal and derivative (as another poster astutely put it), but the problem I have with Nickelback and Creed is that they aren't adding anything. I don't mind bands that basically sound like other music that came before them. GnR channeled Aerosmith on plenty of occasions. I can't count the number of Zeppelin and Beatles knock offs have existed with varying degrees of effectiveness. I just want them to ADD something to what came before. These two bands are really not significantly different than bubblegum pop music. They are just taking what has already been done and repeating it without adding anything new. Frankly, they even copy themselves, repeating the same thing album after album. It's boring.
My problem with Nickelback more so than Creed, is the lack of vocal range and inflection in the lead singer's voice. From the songs I've heard of theirs, they sing every song the exact same way. It also has the same type of guitar work. Nickelback's music is very similar to the new band Daughtry in many ways. I don't think many people would hate these acts if not for the incessant media telling us these bands are supposed to be the in thing and popular and consequently play their tracks and videos all the time.
I don't like Creed's music at all. As for Nickleback, some of their songs are okay, but the radio plays them way too da** much. It gets annoying after awhile.
I rarely watch MTV,BET,VH1,etc because of this type of crap they are more atempts a mind control and warp perceptions to make folx buy crap than anything [but i guess that is all TV] I like the old days. just play the music and shut up Let me decide if it is hot or not I wonder how much Payola is on MTV Rocket River
I just find the music to be incredibly crappy and annoying. And yet it is on the radio all the time!! I am a rock fan and not a rap fan. But I would rather listen to rap or even something like the PussyCat Dolls or Blackeyed Peas than this junk.
this is why... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/466EKohjFUo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/466EKohjFUo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
yeah, that or the fact that those bands just suck ass. i have always thought they sucked - i never jumped on the hate bandwagon...i have been the one pulling it all along. you didnt have an option for 'all of the above' so im not voting.
Also I just never really got into either band. There was one song I thought was catchy by Nickleback I can't even remember but that aside, they never seemed like a band worth buying a CD for, or even pirating. To each their own that likes them though.
all of their songs sound the same. they look and act like douches. they get all sorts of undeserved fame. thus my hate.
Lazy thinking.. that leads to crap music in the pursuit of the allmighty dollar.. Jeff didn't say he wanted something completely new or never done before.. Just that those bands never 'add' to what's been done before.. Kinda like Nirvana went out to sound like The Pixies with "Smells like teen spirit".. followed the same formula.. Loud..quiet.. loud.. melodic verses.. screaming chorus.. Yet when you listen to it.. Dave's drums and Kurt's unique voice styling and relevent songwriting added to that formula.. give it a whole new dimension and impact.
Yeah ... and there was nothing original about Nirvana. I guess energetic thinking led you to believe that there was.
And you're just not listening.. just seeing/hearing what you want to? At what point in my post did I say they were original..? I was trying to show you what Jeff might've meant by adding to something that's been done before.. and not be the exact duplicate of someone that came before or a sound that came before..
By that logic, Slaughter was adding something new by taking what Van Halen/KISS did and putting their own touch on it. You and I both know that's not true, but for some reason it's not cool to copy Van Halen, but it is/was cool to copy the Pixies.
I don't hate them, I just don't like the music. If I hear it, I change the station. They remind me a lot of Bush...and that just makes me nauseous.
My 'problem' is not that they sound generic. There's some run-of-the-mill stuff out there I like. But with these two bands their songs deliver like a bad soap opera. It's very much just a personal taste thing w/ me: very emotive singing, loud guitars, but it just feels very unemotional and insincere and over the top. It's like trying to put out those slow rock ballads for the sake of putting them out there. Same goes w/ their 'heavier' songs too. Just sounds like they're following the formula but it feels so canned. Like I said, it's really my own interpretation. I feel like Bjork's odd singing is way more endearing and sincere than Whitney Houston belting out 'I will always love you' so you might think I'm crazy. To each his/her own...
