Nurse w/ issues with player development and the current stage of the rockets is literally player development. Yikes
Siakam, Koloko and OG have developed better than projected. Barnes has been excellent for 1.5 out of 2 seasons, so you could argue he just had a dip in form and he's a poor fit with two other playmakers in the starting line up and not enough elite scorers. FVV, Boucher, Flynn, Achiuwa, GTJ haven't developed much if at all. Seems to me like he's developed the high value assets and not done so well with less critical prospects, late first round and second round picks. There's no one on that entire list that was ever projected to be a superstar so I'm not sure what was expected of him.
wildly different situation though from ours . . . Toronto was predicted to have ended up around 5th or 6th seed with some 40-45+ wins. We were tanking from the get go. Nurse was trying to win, not focusing exclusively on developing young players
Nurse literally won two championships with development players in the G League. This is garbage - his course just ran out with the raptors, the GM knows it. bring him or Ime to houston and we win the off-season before free agency even starts.
sure maybe but their prized ROY already staggered in his 2nd season. that's definitely not good. if hes not developing and progressing when you're actually trying to win, well that's a red flag
FVV developed a great deal during Nurse's tenure, now he's nearly 30 and there's not much more upside there. FVV has undoubtedly been a player development success story so it's pretty weird to see this angle, honestly. Boucher is 30 and just doesn't have a lot of basketball skill. He's always profiled as a broke man's Siakam, a long athletic energy guy off the bench. Malachi Flynn just sucks. Precious played fewer minutes than the previous year but didn't exactly earn the additional playing time in a deep frontcourt with Poetl, Siakam, Boucher, Thaddeus Young, Otto Porter. I could see him fitting into Masai's point here. But there really wasn't a lot of young talent drying on the vine up there in Toronto
But Barnes had every chance in the world to "sink or swim" on the court. He just can't shoot still ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
which is not good when were talking about player development. he also didn't show any signs of improvement in other areas when he should be at the very least highlighting some part of the game
Pistons are the only other job open. (Besides Rockets and Raptors) Sixers…could they make a change if they go home early (ie next round)? Nuggets…could they make a change if they go home early? Cavs…I don’t think so. TWolves…I don’t think so. Clippers…not firing Lue but could Lue decide to step away? Hawks…already hired Snyder Nets…already hired Vaughn
FVV is the same player he was in his second season, I'm not sure how he's developed. Is there something he does now he didn't do in year 2? It sounds like you're saying he's a good player, which I agree with. The rest of the guys you're saying they are bad now, but that's Masai's whole point. They should have been better than they are and he should have invested more time in them is what Masai seems to be communicating. I can agree with that but it's a marginal point, the success of a franchise doesn't depend on how well we developed fringe players. I can also see that Masai probably overvalues his own picks and thinks they should have been better than Nurse believes.
