Im looking to take my wife to Niagara Falls for our anniversary in mid-September. Neither of us has been there before, so we’re looking forward to going somewhere new. I have read that the park in NY is nicer than the Canadian side, but the best place to stay is in the Canadian side. I have also read it’s pretty touristy around the falls. Looking for any recommendations on hotels, activities, restaurants, etc. from people who have been there. Thanks in advance.
I've been there with the wife about 8 years ago. We both weren't overly impressed. It's very touristy (i.e. Ripleys believe it or not, Madame Tussaude Wax Museum, etc.). We stayed in the Canadian side, the US side didn't look like there was much gong on. There were tours to go ride boats and see the falls up close, and we both were like meh...no. Instead we drove to Toronto and spent the day there while spending the night in Niagara. Also, Ontario has strict alcohol laws. You can only buy beer at "alcohol" or "beer" stores unless at a restaurant or hotel drinking on premise. No alcohol sales on Sundays at all Was not impressed
Was just there last week. I don't live far, so we make day trips, but the Canadian side is the better place to stay. My wife and I stayed at an old dairy plant turned hotel once. It was nice. We went to a place on the New York side called Rock Burger. Very interesting menu, but I was a bit underwhelmed. Cool place though. Jist no fountain sodas and you get bags of chips unless you pay 3 bucks for fries. The state park is just a place to walk around. It's not bad. There's one casino on the New York side. Plenty more on the Canadian. Toronto's not that far away. I'd spend a day or two there. Not sure if you're flying or driving, but on the way up, along lake Erie, there's all kinds of winieries, if that's your thing. I live near a bunch of them.
There are wineries on the Canadian side as well. There are several around St Catharines which isn't far from the Falls. Ultimately, the Canadian side is just nicer (for whatever reason the American side is a state park instead of a National Park so it just has very limited resources). The National Park Service needs to take over the American side and make it into a proper national park like the Canadians have. It would inject some much needed life into the American side.
I figured there were, based off the climate. I've just never ventured that far into Canada, to be honest.
Think it's worth seeing. Good day. I remember being little when I went and some Japanese guy handed his camera to me. I said thank you.And then my parents let me know what he wanted. Generally impressed with water speed up close and how little there is to keep you from taking the plunge.
I wouldn't go to Toronto unless I have to ,mainly for the traffic and nothing special from other big cities . If you have a week , spend a day in Niagara falls , drive to Kingston, Ottawa , Montreal, Quebec City which is probably the most underrated city in NA,enjoy Montmorency fall up close , then back to Niagara for a 2nd looks. There are many bus~ tour packages for a bargain in September
We Drove to montreal from niagara falls. Niagara is cool a day is enough. Thought toronto was dirty and overall unimpressive. Ottawa was a treat and my favorite. Montreal was cool and reminded me of new orleans in a strange way. Makes sense though. We drove back through vermont and burlington was nice as well
