Oh, I agree with your first part. It is silly, the whole damn system in the NFL is silly. Of course, that's probably one of the reasons there's so much parity, so it's a Catch-22. You're probably right on the leverage. The only thing I can give TO credit for is doing this now and not mid-July.
yeah..all good. and Ron Mexico is still overrated!! (we never talked about that Eagles playoff game, by the way!)
SERIOUSLY??? that's freaking awesome!!! If you'll remember, that was the weekend immediately after the weekend where we watched the games together at Live. I think that's the last time we hung out together, which sucks. But I was in Little Rock the next weekend and watched that game with my father-in-law, who watches just enough football to be dangerous. I got back in town and it was too far after the fact to come in here and try to pull an "I told you so" routine. Sooooo...I didn't. But I haven't forgotten!
Let's say he only got 50 catches for 5 TDs and got suspended for a game for one of his dumbass end zone celebrations. I wonder what he'd say to the Eagles if they asked him to re-negotiate his contract for poor performance...
As long as he produces on the field, the Eagles will find a way to put up with him. SF did it until they decided to seriously rebuild. And if he helps to bring the iggles a sb, then it would be worth the headaches. But if I were the iggles I wouldn't give in to his demands. I would consider giving him a raise, yah, but not a substantial one. He signed the contract. If he wants to sit out and not get his cash, then fine. The iggles can win w/o him(in the regular season anyway).
it's the NFL, the Eagles wont re-negotiate, they'd cut. As far as T.O. leverage, besides retiring, he can half bake it like Sprewell and Cassell did this season, and we saw how much problem that caused. In the end it's a lose lose for both the franchise and the player. The franchise is foreced to paly a player that might not be trying his hardest and taking playint time away from those that might, on the other hand, the player seriously hurts his market value. The part of the contract of Owens that does get to me is that his first few years not even in the top 10 players bracket, which means when he's getting in to the payday part of his contract (probably when it will be 9 - 11 million/ year contract), the Eagles will cut him. There's no if, in the NFL, a player at Owens age with that contract will get cut even if he is a top 10 talent. Ownes knows this and this is why he is demading a trade.
good for owens. if he's not being paid as one of the top players, which he clearly is, then asking for a raise is perfectly fine. especially as others have said when it's a sport where the team can cut you loose at any time. if he's willing to sit out then the eagles would have to be willing to not have their first or second best player. we'll see who gives in first but i think they'll come to an agreement somewhere in between. they need each other too much and philly probably knows he's at least partially right here.
He signed the contract, period. If he felt the contract was unfair then he shouldn't have signed it, period. Don't sign a contract, pocket 10 million dollars and then cry that you want more. If the contract was "sub-standard" to begin with why did we not hear any complaining then? If TO wants flexibility with how much he makes each year then just sign one year contracts. Yes the NFL is tougher on players than other leagues. But there's a trade off, in the NBA and MLB teams get handicapped with players not living up to their contracts or getting suspended, etc. So who do you screw the players or the teams? Pick your poison. TO is an embarrasment to the NFL. A great player who will be remembered more as an arrogant attention w**** than a top WR. Smeg try these: www.nfldraftblitz.com www.gbnreport.com
I seriously don't. T.O. was the hero of Philly after his phenomenal Super Bowl performance. He just squandered it all away with this dumb move.
