Its like when you go play pickup ball and you aren't good enough so you try to close line the other guy.

Perfect example. In the 80's they called that a good hard foul. Now you get suspended 10 games. The evolution of sport.

And you enjoy soccer where flopping is the standard?

There is flopping in every sport, even football has some flopping now. When the rules start changing in the NFL, players will do anything to gain an edge. Even flop.

You think Goodell has a choice? The so-called "pussyfication" of the NFL is not an option, it is a mandate.

The lawsuits are piling up, the league has been trying very hard to cover up the old fogies with spines like spongecake b****ing about not being taken care of.

Every 60 million dollar contract given to a #1 pick who had never played a down in the league was a slap in the face to the veterans.

The NFL knows that litigation alone will sink the league and that Goodell has to rule with an iron fist to prove without a doubt that the NFL is committed to player safety.

The concussion issues will only intensify the greater lengths players go to to win games.

Goodell is doing what is necessary to ensure the sport survives long term.

    This x10000000.

When one of the current players becomes an old coot...and decides it's time to sue the league for what happened to his brain over the course of his career....

can you imagine how valuable information regarding the NFL turning a blind eye to this stuff would be? can you imagine how much a plaintiff's attorney would salivate over a league knowing this is going on and not making a serious effort to stamp it out?

I agree with you 100% moes. I just doubt that the fans will accept the change. Another sport will pop up to fill the violence gab that the NFL leaves. MMA might be the biggest threat the NFL has.

Troy Aikman went on record recently saying he thinks the sport is in serious danger long term and those are among the reasons.

If someday some hot-shot lawyer out there can prove that playing in the NFL caused a player serious, life-threatening injuries and the NFL did absolutely nothing to prevent it, that would be the beginning of the end.

Why do you think the rules have been changed to protect QBs? Because QBs are the smartest players and get paid the most money which = highest threat of a potential lawsuit.

Goodell is no dumbass, and my thinking is that he is only going to continue to promote player safety and take steps necessary to prevent concussions, but he can't erase the blind eyes previous commissioners turned.

This bounty scandal is terrible timing given the calm before the storm. Goodell has no choice but the drop the hammer.

In fact I'd be surprised if Goodell didn't come out soon and ban Williams for life.

Also funny that Donny used the "sausage is made" analogy. Peter King is on live on NFL Network right now and just said the same thing.

I'm not so sure about that. The NFL's wussification has coincided with its massive popularity growth. The most popular sport in the world is sissy ballerina ball. The NFL will be just fine, I welcome changes to the game, especially if it makes it more like Aussie rules.

And plenty of us whine about how wuss the league has become on this board.

I don't think Williams was saying anything that isn't said in plenty of other locker rooms. I doubt the Saints are doing things that isn't going on in many other places. But they got caught and gotta pay the price. Maybe they would have been ok if the league wasn't in CYA mode from impending lawsuits related to injury.

This is a violent sport where dudes are paid millions to perform. If no one is shocked about all the doping that takes place in football, or other things to keep players performing then why are folks so appalled at this? Isn't this the same sport where Ronnie Lott lost part of his finger to keep playing, and we applaud him as a warrior yet call Deion a puss cuz he didn't wanna tackle?

I feel for Saints fans because you can almost bet this kind of thing has been going on for years throughout the league, unfortunately for them Goodell's hands are tied on the matter.

You either deal with 1 fanbase screaming "UNFAIR" or 31 fanbases screaming "double standard".

I think Vilma is going to get a year suspension and I think several other players will get 4 games.

It would speed up the pace and improve the flow of the game, remove the gawdy (and dangerous) pads, place less of an emphasis on knocking the s**t out of people and more emphasis on kicking, leaping ability, and catching. Essentially it places more importance on athletic ability, strategy, technique, and skill than just sheer brute force. I'm not sure how you could incorporate the passing game into an aussie hybrid, but I'd be open to any ideas that make the game flow better, in addition to making it safer.

I've been watching a lot of Rugby Sevens lately. Now there is a brutal sport.

    The future of the NFL?

so essentially removing pads, protection? wouldn't that slow down the game? i'm thinking you remove pads and the defense slows down considerably before they make a hit.

not arguing..seriously asking. i've never watched much aussie football.

As long as I never have to sit through an entire baseball game I'll be good.

    Dear Moes:

I'm sorry, but your heretical comments regarding Our National Pastime have doomed you to Hell which involves spending eternity in a "church" like the one you were forced to go to as a child.

    Sincerely,

    Max

    Dear Max,

Maybe I would watch baseball, but any sport where you can interview the coach of the team while play is going on just doesn't really make it seem like there is much intensity.

I think baseball is a good thinking game, a strategy game.

Maybe one step above a televised Chess tournament.

Perhaps eventually IBM can develop some computer programs to just simulate baseball scores and that way kids like Drew Henson won't have to waste their promising NFL careers hoping to make it to the Yankees.

I look forward to a future cheering for the E-twins with their scrawny RAM and AMD Duron Processor vs The New York HALs

    Best Regards,

    moes

The padding is what is so dangerous and enabling about the violence in the NFL. Remove the pads and people won't go violently launching themselves like missles at each other. When you're a little more exposed, you're less likely to take giant risks like that. Not saying no pads is the answer (esp not for offensive players!), but they become a hindrance at some point.

The speed of the game would decrease, yes, but the pace of the game would not. A very important distinction. Less stops in the action, better flow and rhythm. The NFL is a demolition derby for 10 seconds followed by elongated pauses. Imagine Aussie rules more like boxing, ebbs and flows, but still physical enough to keep your attention.

IMO, the NFL is eventually going to get to the point where these giant behemoths are no longer needed and the amount of padding will need to be decreased out of necessity for more mobility and speed. They're going to legislate safety into the game, which is going to make the current equipment and prototypical player outdated and less effective.
