I think the "valuable" in MVP gets misapplied a lot. I don't think it's meant to be taken literally. You could conceivably handicap a guy simply because he has a capable backup. For example, we've now seen what the Colts look like with Curtis Painter at QB. The Colts would obviously be screwed without Peyton Manning. But lets say hypothetically that Tom Brady was Peyton's backup. All of sudden, the loss of Manning wouldn't be so huge. So would Peyton be any less of an MVP type player if he had a better backup? Of course not. Don't get so caught up in the word "Valuable". MVP = Best player. Regardless, it's league MVP. How you apply "valuable" in the context of the entire league? The one player the league could least afford to lose? The one player that if he goes down, the league doesn't win as many games? It doesn't make any sense. Just give it to the best player. FWIW, prior to 1960 the award was called the Player of the Year award. I don't think they changed the criteria when they changed the name. MVP sounds sexier and sounds better as a chant than POY.
CJ is close to being the best player in the league and can change a game in a heartbeat HOWEVER the Titans were 8-8 with him so his value to the season is limited. Manning LEAD that team to 14-2 and if Caldwell doesn't lose his balls they go 16-0 without him they MIGHT win 7 or 8 games. Manning - MVP CJ - Best player in the NFL
I totally agree. I don't buy the whole crap that some people say when caught up with the word 'valuable'. That is very subjective and is totally a gray area. If I were voting for MVP, it's basically the best player.
Congrats to Peyton. Very deserving (and also very boring). Part of me wishes they would have gone for the shock factor and given it to Queen Favre.
they still have OPOY and DPOY awards. Johnson will win the OPOY award, but not mvp. I think there is a difference now
Congrats to Manning. I saw the look on his face when he was pulled out against the Jets. He wanted to win out. And the Texans would be in the Playoffs right now. So, congrats.
The mvp long ago should have been renamed to the either qb or rb on the best team* award. *unless the best team is led by its defense, then see 2nd best team.
Mark Moseley? Lawrence Taylor? At first I thought Rice won it... but that was only Super Bowl... I had to WikiPedia-search this
Peyton is always good. It is expected. And, it is also expected that the Colts will be in the playoffs making a run. Congrats and I'm gonna let you finish...but Tony Romo had his best season of all time.
CJ not only had 2K yards, but someone on the radio sunday was saying how it was much more significant that he broke the all purpose yardage record. that being said, i've never seen peyton be more valuabe than this season. first year head coach, no significant running game, he was more of a coach on the field than any other year imo.
it's hard to argue against the peyton. he was the best player, BY FAR, on the team with the best record in the league. chris johnson was awesome, no doubt, but they don't give MVPs to players on teams that don't even make the playoffs. edit: brees was worthy as well.
