I agree with Bobrek. I get it a lot of people say stupid and insensitive things especially when younger. It's a different matter to be doing so consistently when as a man in his 50's. On top of that bad mouthing co workers and others in your profession on work emails.

I also agree that I think the NFL is being very selective here and I strongly suspect that what Gruden said has been said widely throughout the NFL. A few years ago Viking's Punter Chris Kluwe publicly criticized then Vikings' special teams coach Mike Priefer for homophobic language that he would use during team meetings. While the Vikings disciplined Priefer he is still coaching in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns. I have a hard time accepting that Gruden and Priefer are the only coaches, execs and players in the NFL frequently using language like that.

Any profession that has a machismo culture such as pro Football or direct combat military occupations are going to be rife with that type of "humor". That's the unfortunate reality.

Yes in martial arts circles especially among older martial artists a lot of this type of attitudes are prevalent. Even as a college coach in recent years I've had to caution and restrain some of my players about what their language.

    good take.
however the emails never did any harm because it was banter between two friends.
    Sending naked pictures of cheerleaders.
Don't they have to pose naked to get pictures taken in the first place???
    hmmmm

Regardless of who the conversation was between, making fun of a black man's lips, saying the NFL shouldn't draft queers and calling people faggots reveal the true character of a 50+ year old man.

why was it revealed? that's the real question.
Did people know that Gruden was an A-hole? Sure.

Can he be an A-hole in private? yes.

Why was HIS EMAIL TARGETED ON AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM?
He wasn't even employed by the NFL when the emails were written!

Black man lips jokes? Probably. Certainly plenty of racist jokes based on stereotypes.

Using the F-word though is pretty similar to using the N-word. Does not belong in the vocabulary. And for him to be coach of the only team with an openly gay player, that is pretty damn bad.

If you had written an email to the WFT and it was on their server, it would be being looked at as well.

if it's a bad business decision then it's their decision to make, and they will pay a price for it.

Mark Davis says ' I have no comment '
My opinion is this is targeting for sure. The Raiders have always had conflict with the NFL , especially Al Davis.

    https://autos.yahoo.com/autos/raiders-gm-mike-mayock-addresses-194558904.html

To which Mark Davis said simply:

“I have accepted Jon Gruden’s resignation as Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.”

    And that was it.

Wednesday, ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez reached out to Davis in the hopes that two days after the fact, the Raiders owner will have had a chance to collect his thoughts and thus have something to say. He did not. In fact, his only response was seemingly worse than saying nothing at all.

“I have no comment,” Davis said. “Ask the NFL. They have all the answers.”

So the NFL doesn't want to show the rest of the emails?
except for John Gruden and Schefter?

    Poor Gruden.

So he is owed something for the NFL leaking things he actually said and he thinks he would have not had to resign if they were revealed at another time?

    Makes total sense.

I don't think Gruden's lawsuit as much of a chance. He's not denying he wrote those things and if he used NFL email accounts those are the NFL's property. Too many people don't realize that work email's aren't private correspondence but professional and insulting co workers and others, using crude language in most businesses is a fireable offense.

That said I have a very hard time accepting that Gruden was the only coach or executive out there saying such things. While what Gruden did I think is a fireable offense but I can also believe that the NFL was being very selective about this.
