I'm on board with being a fan of the Connor Barwin pick. See page 3 of this thread. It just doesn't seem that this draft is full of top-shelf talent. I think there will be a lot of later round picks that turn out just as good as the early round picks. Barwin, for example, has a chance to be a more valuable pick than Cushing. I could see him being a Jason Babin, but in my opinion, Connor Barwin is going to be a great player. Like I said, I'm more sold on him than Cushing. I could end up eating those words, but I doubt it.... Here's to hoping we find a safety or corner in the third round. I feel there are a few diamonds out there.
Rashad Johnson and D.J. Moore could be available, Shonn Greene, Jaron Gilbert, and Roy Miller would also be good picks.
I was thinking/hoping that they would go offense or DB in the 2nd round and get Miller or Henry Melton later on for DL depth. I think Roy Miller is greatly undervalued.
Good thing we spent the 7th pick on him. I don't get what you wanted Sam. In Cushing the Texans got a beast who, despite your insistence, has never tested positive for any substance (that positive report was retracted and the website apologized to him). He's a three year starter for one of the best programs in the nation. Kiper and the NFL Network guys all praised his work ethic and willingness to do anything that was asked of him. He's going to probably fill the spot of Zach Diles who, while a nice player and I'm sure he's a nice guy, is he a starting quality linebacker in the NFL? Now, I'll admit, Barwin probably could have been had a round later. But a lot of people have been complaining that they need a 3rd down pass rushing specialist. Well, here everyone goes. One of, if not the, best athletes in the entire draft and played well enough to be named all-conference at a BCS conference. He's got speed, agility, and raw potential coming out of his ears. Will he meet that potential? Who knows? Based on track record, I'm willing to give Smith and Kubiak the benefit of the doubt.
I really don't like this draft...but I'm not sure I really care that much. I think this team will be competitive next year (playoff competitive) regardless. If I were a Denver fan or an Oakland fan, I would have been PISSED in the first round.
Barwin shot up the boards lately. I'm surprised he was there when we picked. He talked like he had some indication he would be a first rounder. I actually thought the Pats would ick him up in the spot where they grabbed Lauranitis.
Crap, well there goes Shonn Greene to the Jets. The Jets sent their third-round pick (No. 76 overall), their fourth-round pick (No. 115 overall), and their seventh-round pick (No. 228 overall) to the Lions for the ability to jump up eleven spots and land Iowa tailback Shonn Greene with the first pick in round three.
I don't think they are/were targeting a front 7 guy again in the third round. RB or Safety/DB is what I think they will go after. Maybe an interior offensive lineman.
Love it. The thing that's mystified me the most about this offseason -- from the fans to the team -- is this attitude that the OL is fixed and doesn't need any moves. Watching any games down the stretch -- especially the Oakland game -- you could see Kubiak absolutely did not have the confidence in his OL to move a pile in a short-yardage situation... and the weakest link was in the middle. I don't know much about Caldwell, but I love the position they addressed with it. I was afraid they wouldn't.
Allowed just one quarterback sack and graded 85 percent for blocking consistency as a senior, earning All-State first-team honors...
