Agreed. I like the Barwin pick. It looks like he is a younger, better version of Mike Vrabel. Athletic enough to play line backer and quick enough to rush the passer at DE, and he is productive and relentless. The only thing wrong with this guy is that he has only played the position for one year, and I'm not even sure that's really a problem either.
Im impressed that so many of you have followed Barwin...I mean, Im sure thats why you guys are knocking the guy already. If anything, if you dont know much about him, look at his combine numbers and realize that he has a real shot at being a freak on the field.
Hmm... I guess we are talented enough to go after situational/hybrid types. I am guessing they will go after need players (DB, RB) on day 2...
Round 3...I think we really need to address the secondary. Round 4...we find our bruising RB. I wouldnt mind a flip flop of the situation above if the timing was right. DJ Moore and Rashad Johnson are still on board...and although its unlikely that they will be there tomorrow at our pick, I would take one of them in a heartbeat.
Maybe they can find a RB from Denver.... They got like 7 of them now... (between RBs and "FBs") The combine numbers on this guy is incredible. That's where Mario shined as well if people couldn't remember. Rick Smith has been pretty money over his picks and I'll take their feel for it. I don't get why people always tend to rip a pick because they didn't pick the guy you wanted. Everyone, including these "draft experts" always seem to think they know what each team should have as their "perfect pick." Teams reach at potential.... It happens. Otherwise, you have fans from 31 cities wondering why Tom Brady is not wearing their team's uniforms. Why is Owen Daniels in the 4th round.... Teams have to take certain chances and Rick Smith has been nothing short of great at evaluating talent so far.
It sounds like Barwin was a Frank Bush pick. Barwin'll fill fit in great in the joker packages. Arizona's joker packages have an emphasis on guys who can play different roles on the line: rush the passer, drop into coverage, or play the line. The ESPN commentators said that Barwin might be the most versatile player in the draft. I really really wanted Malcolm Jenkins at 15 and William Moore at 46 but we got neither I trust Smithiak so oh well.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/profiles/connor-barwin?id=71197 http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers?tabIndex=0 6'4" and 256 lbs. Some interesting comparisons: 0-40 time: 4.66 2nd fastest of all the defensive lineman. Orakpo ran 4.70. Vertical jump: 40.5 inches Highest of all DL...1 inch higher than Orakpo. 7 players in the entire draft jumped higher...includes WR, CB, and S. Broad jump: 10'8" Highest of all DL. 8 players in the entire draft out jumped him. 3 cone drill: 6.87 s 2nd highest of all DL. William Moore, the safety many of you wanted, did it in 6.84 s. 20 yard shuffle: 4.18 s Fastest of all DL...by 0.1 second margin. Crushed them.
I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out...they must have some big plans for him since they took him in the 2nd round. Im sure he will be a big part of the aggressive, attack the offense, wreak havoc type of defense we are supposed to see next season.
i guess we're gonna have one of the best 7 in the league, if smith turns out to be a player, then we just might.
I agree there is no way you draft someone that high without giving them significant playing time. It will be an interesting front 7. Now if Dunta would shut up and play...
I can understand the raw or inexperienced at DE argument but still, 11 sacks in his first full year at the position is pretty impressive. IIRC, Owen Daniels only played one year of TE at Wisconsin (converted QB). That seemed to work out pretty well.
Ask Philly about Mike Mamula's measureables. One year at DE, in the Big East? How the hell could you project anything from that? Give me anybody that has a two year pedigree in the SEC.
DL stands for defensive lineman...which includes defensive ends...many of which are in the 250-260 range. Maybin, the 11th pick is 249 Orakpo, the 13th pick is 263 English, the 16th pick is 255 Everette Brown is 256. Sintim is 256. Barwin is 256. There are many DE that are in the same range. And he's faster than many OLB that are in the same range of weight as well, so Im not exactly sure what your point is unless you just want to nitpick at something stupid.
He's only going to be a situational pass rusher. yea he has only played one year at DE but thats why he is going to be a situational player in his ROOKIE season. He is still going to develop more pass rushing abilities and become a regular part of the rotation. And you also cant forget about how he is going to do on special teams with his speed and versatility. He is going to be a good one and this is coming from someone who wanted william moore instead.
Thank you, I was about to post this until I saw that you did. Barwin is a DE that will most likely get his reps at OLB. He was a 2 year starting TE which means he is skilled enough (more than some with his catching) to play outside, great pick to help Williams/Smith. No longer will they be able to predicate much of the Defense to doubling DE's if they have 3-4 quick guys on the outside of them. Cushings is goin to be a better run/pass stopper than Barwin, but with some time, I think Barwin is quick enough (just has to learn the skills of an Outside Rusher) to get to the QB. Hope we go DB in the 3rd/4th round, wouldnt even mind if we used both picks on the Defense, we were the 3rd rated Offense in the leage last year, we have to build our defense up to get in the 10-20 range among teams, then we will will, IMO.
