Dude Chris Brown is old. He's Ahman Green clone in a sense of injuries. I'd rather have Kyle Lowry of the Rockets. LOL
Casey could play fullback and tight end and will be a beast on special teams. Hill was the best blocking tight end in the draft. I think the Texans will spend the last two picks on a QB and RB.
I hope the Texans take a look at Ricky Jean-Francois. He's still out there. We could have an All-World underachieving defensive tackle corps!
I'm hoping Cedric Peerman or Rashad Jennings falls to us in the 6th. If they dont then we should trade Anthony Hill for a running back.
from espn draft chat Why did texans pick to TEs? Gary Horton:*I think both of these guys probably had higher grades on them than this round indicates. When you're looking at your value board, it exposes guys that you graded high but are still on the board. AT this stage, a lot of teams are looking for the best available player, regardless of position. This is a little unusual. Casey looks like a guy who could be an H-back, on the move kind of guy which would give them some versatility. He would not be used as a blocking TE. From ESPN CHAT: Phil (TX):*Umm, why did Houston take two TE's consecutively? Gary Horton:*I think both of these guys probalby had higher grades on them than this round indicates. Hill has the chance to develop into a bigger guy and he's probably a better blocker. You're getting versatility and a guy who could be your blocker in short yardage. Athletic TEs also make good special teams players. That's something you really value in Day 2, guys who can be on the cover teams. Zach (Indiana):*The draft is about value not needs. You want to collect as much talent as possible. (Egghead beat me)
At least these guys are Tx guys and are probably digging this moment right now. They are probably going to help us out man I just don't like our RB situation right now outside of Slaton.
Does this quote make you feel any better about Caldwell? "DeMeco was a mentor to me when I was at Alabama - kind of took me under his wing - and I’ve always admired the way he works," Caldwell said. "I admire his leadership. And actually to be a part of his team now, I know he’s done a great job out there, so I’m just excited. It’s truly a blessing and I’m looking forward to it." http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=5250
Casey intriguing but Texans still need a big back April 26, 2009 3:21 PM Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky James Casey is a very intriguing player, a versatile tight end who can run, catch and throw and will prompt questions about whether the Texans will bust out some Wildcat. He was not asked to block much at Rice -- where the Texans saw him up close -- but Houston drafted Anthony Hill 30 spots earlier and Hill may be the best blocking tight end in the draft. If these guys pan out, the Texans are loaded at the position, as Owen Daniels is already a Pro Bowler and one of the NFL's most underrated tight ends. Daniels is a restricted free agent they would like to sign long-term. If he plays this year for the tender offer and the free agency rules are the same next year, he could be able to test the market. If the Texans keep him, they are potentially stacked at the spot. Should he leave, they should be able to withstand the loss. Casey is a hard guy not to root for, and it will be fun to see how he pans out as a pro and how he is deployed by the Texans. Houston has three picks left, and one of them should be used on a big running back to pair with Steve Slaton. A couple guys who may be in the right mold who are still available: Liberty's Rashad Jennings, Wisconsin's P.J. Hill and Texas' Chris Ogbonnaya.
I agree that Casey is a great pick, great value, especially at this point in the draft. He's a guy that would have worth to any team in any system. I see him as a more athletic Frank Wycheck type. Line him up at fullback, tight end, receiver, etc. And if he contributes in special teams, then that is critical at this point in the draft. You aren't looking for immediate starters, but you are looking for depth, flexibility and special teams contributors.
While Hill and Casey are good picks, I can't understand the logic behind picking 2 TE's back to back when you already have a pro-bowl TE on the roster. Hill makes more sense since he can block and while I'm a big fan of Casey, I just don't see the need for him. I was really hoping we'd pick up a DT, G, and WR at some point today. Rashad Jennings or P.J. Hill would be a nice pickup in the 6th.
