    Get rid of the forward progress rule, and you'll have plays that go on forever. Defenses would hold up ball carriers for an eternity until one of them could strip it loose. Teams would lose 10 or more yards when a swarm of defenders pushed/pulled the ball carrier back (I don't care who you are, you're not stronger than a gang tackle). It would be complete chaos.

    And yes, the play last night was one of those situations. Bradshaw was stacked up and pushed backward, well in the grasp of defenders. At every level of football, that (by definition) is an end to forward progress and the play is over.
