I really don’t follow college so I genuinely want to know who are the prospects next year given we will probably be very bad again and might be in top 5 territory. The main reason I’m bringing this up is shouldn’t we at least consider next year’s prospects to play a factor in who we pick now?

Always pick the best player available. Always. Otherwise you're overreaching which is never good. You worry about overlap latter and address that through trades.

AFAIK Holmgren and Banchero are really good and they’re both Bigs. Jaden Hardy i think is the highest rated wing. I don’t know much about them yet, I’ll wait for us to actually get a pick within that range.

    absolutely

But I think one small intangible with drafting freshman centers is they often help you tank the next yr too, giving you a better pick the following yr due to their often slower development.

this is not a Mobley v Green post, just stating a small intangible wrt thread topic

we shouldn't consider next year as we don't even know what range we'll be picking at. Even if we are really bad we can fall out of the top 5 depending on coin flip. You can't plan for Holmgren or Banchero what if you get like 8th or w/e.

Doesn't matter. You get the best player available, if the position is crowded then evacuate it or devise a system where it can work. The difference between the 3rd and 4th best player in the draft could be gigantic, you can't mess with that.

We're not trying to win a title and 2 ball dominant players can play on the same team - in fact most NBA titles are won that way.

    This year:
Pick the best player you can at #2
Pick the best player you can with the other picks.
Roll the ball out and see who your best players are.
    Play the season
Find out where you're drafting next year.

    Next year:
    Pick the best player available.

    https://nbadraftroom.com/the-elite-25-the-top-25-prospects-in-high-school-basketball/

    High School Seniors: 2022 Draft

    Guards and Wings
    3. Jaden Hardy – 6-5 – SG – Henderson, NV – HSsr.
    10. Jabari Smith – 6-8 – SF – Tyron, GA (Auburn) – HSsr.
    11. Caleb Houstan – 6-8 – SF – Montverde (Michigan) – HSsr.
    12. Adrian Griffin Jr. – 6-6 – SF – Duke commit – HSsr.
Honorable Mention: Nolan Hickman – 6-2 – PG – Kentucky commit – HSsr.
    Honorable Mention: J.D. Davison – 6-2 – PG – Alabama commit – HSsr.

    Big/Tall Forwards and Centers
    2. Chet Holmgren 7-0 – C – Minneapolis, MN – HSsr.
    5. Paolo Banchero 6-10 – PF – Seattle, WA (Duke) – HSsr.
    7. Patrick Baldwin Jr – 6-10 – SF/PF – Sussex, WI – HSsr.
    9. Daimion Collins – 6-9 – PF – Atlanta, TX (Kentucky) – HSsr.
    21. Mike Foster – 6-9 – PF – Milwaukee, WI – HSsr.
Honorable Mention: Payton Watson – 6-9 – SF – Long Beach, CA (UCLA) – HSsr.
    Honorable Mention: Moussa Diabate – 6-9 – SF/PF – IMG (France) – HSsr.

From this list, the better talent for 2022 draft will be big men. So go with Jalen Green as 2nd pick in 2021, try to trade 23rd and 24th picks to go up for Kai Jones or BPA if not, then draft a big man in lottery and 6-8/6-9 in the back of 2022 draft.

Precisely, teams that try to get cute about fit, end up regretting it way too often. I guess this philosophy would work if players were assuredly legit NBA talents, but with all of the freshmen in the draft, there isn't as much concrete information to make a determination on a G-league player or sometimes even a up to a sophmore.

If you look at the NBA draft, even thought the stars get selected in the first round for the most part, there seem to be 4 times as many misses as there are hits.... The NBA is a true roll of the dice, too many goose eggs even in the lottery picks.

So, ignore the fit need away, and go for best player available regardless of need. I'd rather have a talented all-star on the team, playing behind another all-star, than a guy who can't even make the roster 2 or 3 years after laying an egg in his short NBA tenure, because he was a better fit..

High Schoolers being allowed back next year? Thought it was long rumored to be 2022 or 2023.

If we go Mobley (which I hope we don't), I'm targeting Jalen Hardy for 2022. Kid's smooth and could be as good if not better than Green. He's hitting from Steph/Dame range consistently.

Not only better shooter, Hardy is much better passer as well.

Oh, and he can play defense too.

It is not all that clear in a deep draft where anyone could excel with the right amount of work and know how.

Much better shooter than Green. Not even close to Green athletically. Elite shooting is just as valuable though.

I think you should always draft BPA.

I agree with best player available but I fear we won’t take Green, because we’re banking on KPJ…
