The national anthem is no reminder of those rights and not playing the anthem will not make it go out of existence.

It's about time. Good for Cuban and the Mavericks. Get all that USA rah rah rah bullshit out or sports. Except for the Olympics.

One man's patriotism is another man's terrorism.

Never knew why there was a need to feel patriotic before a domestic basketball league game. I'm pretty sure the only reason the tradition exists is because of the military pays the NBA a lot of money

It is political because the national anthem is that, it partains something to the nation. It is good that the national anthem reminds you of your rights as a citizen but people are there to play, spectate and enjoy basketball right? It's a leisure event if you are gonna be honest the national anthem has no place in it.

Its like if you play the anthem at home before you watch TV, eat dinner or bang your wife. Its not related to the activity you are doing at all IMO.

The other dude who said its just tradition and association attempt is right. The govt just wants people to associate the anthem (and prob the country as well subconsiously) with a past time they enjoy. But looking at it in white and black the anthem really shouldnt be played in purely recreational activities since nation building is not on people's priority when they go to watch an NBA game unlike when its a boxing match between 2 diff nationalities or the Olympics or something similar.

It always makes me roll my eyes and borderline cringeworthy. On a weekday afternoon between two american teams singing the national anthem.
And that's because I have tolerance for other people's customs. If it happened in the domestic sports leagues here I would be fulltime ridiculing.

One thing to sing the national anthem in the army, national holidays , international events or schools. But in a domestic unimportant sports event?

What you sing the anthem also when you take a dump in the toilet? Why not?
    You aren't patriotic enough!

    Oh okay.
Then every morning when you go to the office you play the national anthem from the speakers while every employee stands up. Right?
Otherwise how you are reminded of your rights?

Wouldn’t be a bad idea. Then you wouldn’t have so many damn victims running around that have no clue about their rights as citizens. What kind of America do YOU want to create? As an immigrant, I want the one that I signed up for. You ain’t gonna change my mind.

Personally I don't think America on certain things. Because everyone in America has an opinion and everyone thinks their opinion is important and must be heard, the country has very few things that people agree on. The national anthem used to be something that most Americans agreed on, it was something that unified Americans even if for 2 minutes. Now, that doesn't even exist.

The USA is the most unique place I have ever been. I have never been to a country that is as successful and with such high opportunities and yet their own people are so hard on their own country. For example, racism. There is far more racism in Europe and Japan and other first world countries than exist in the USA, yet many Americans and the media would complain endlessly about racism. The United States the last 15 years or so do not sweep anything under the run like almost every other first world nation does. Everyone knows the USA's business and struggles because American citizens will make sure everyone knows about.

Intolerance and bigotry have no place, and often are covered in patriotism and "love it or leave it" claims.

As for the Mavericks and the national anthem, I don't care. People are going to the Mavericks games to watch basketball and not for the anthem.

    What does this matter?

They are playing in the United States, they are getting paid by Americans and they are playing an American game.

If I were playing basketball or soccer in Europe I would expect to stand for their anthem if they choose to play it.

Definitely a political decision. Has nothing to do with sports. Cuban trying to score woke points.

Americans are such slaves to the news cycle that now Patriotism = Racism
