[NEWS] China Says Buddhas Must Obtain Permission for Reincarnation

The movie Little Buddha is a good primer on how a reincarnation is identified.

 

The "something" Bush would do in that situation is replace the entire Supreme Court with them! So no, I wouldn't want Bush to do anything more than have them over to the Crawford ranch for some fried chicken.

 

I think this is completely about the PRC seeking to control the Tibetan religious community. They know that they can't destroy it as was tried in the Cultural Revolution but if they can control the succession they control the religion.

I totally agree and I think its been a huge mistake of the PRC to not accept the Dalai Lama's terms. This would be of huge beneift the PRC as it would remove a major criticism of them without giving up anything substantial.

 

That's why the Tibetan religious community already has a system for determining reincarnations that has worked for them for centuries.

There are already dozen's if not hundreds of Jesuses running around. Just hang around Washington Square park in NYC and you're likely to see a few people claiming to be Jesus.

Winky aside though in the US we have separation of church and state and this would be the equivalent of the US government deciding who the Mormom church determines is prophets.

This is all about control.

The process of selecting Dalai Lama by central government of China was instituted centuries ago in the early Qing Dynasty. It has never been a problem to the loving caring tender-hearted Western imperalists, until now. Big hoohoo.

FYI, the author of the original article, Jane Macartney, happens to be a descendant of George Macartney, who, in 1793 as the first British envoy to China, made such bodacious demand to then Qing Emperor Qianlong that China gave up a small island of Zhousan off the coast of what is now Zhejiang province. Like father like son -- well, not exactly, but you get the idea -- the Anglo-Saxon jingoism hardly dies.

They are afraid the future Lama may be reincarnated in India or somewhere. Then they will have to face the same dilemma with the current Lama again. Now they can be sure the future Lama will be born in China and under their control.

 

And they're busy buying up all the Russian hardware they can get, and they can afford a lot. Sucks to be a Tibetan Buddhist. It's like having the Federal Govenrment telling the Methodist Church who can be their ministers.
