That builds a really nice machine for the money. If I had some cash lying around, and more importantly, knew people with money, I'd build a few of these and flip them for $500+. Specifically, the 9800gt and the 1tb drive are really good deals and if you are upgrading, leaving out 100 bucks for Microsoft makes it easier. That E5300 will overclock to 3.5 pretty reliably. Intel has long mastered the 45nm process and bins really fast chips to fill market segments. Happy hunting! Also, this isn't spam... just killing time while downloading Mythbusters over a RTT connection. 16kbps ftw!
I've been out of the hardware loop forever but isn't the 9800 GT, at least, two years old, already? Won't the Pentium bottleneck the system? Still, nice set.
Yes, the 9800gt is old, but it will still crush anything you can find for $50 dollars, and you would be really hard pressed to surpass it for 70 assuming you never get your rebate for whatever reason. It is comparable to an ATI 5670... Also, it doesn't do DX11, which doesn't matter all that much since using DX11 features on any card near this price point brings such a performance penalty as to make games unplayable. The E5300 isn't as much of a bottleneck as the single channel memory, but overclocking will help memory performance. The memory will be the limiting factor in overclocking (low multiplier on the chip x fsb) as this chip is good for an easy 3.5ghz. The thing is, building to a $400 dollar price point necessitates compromise.
Just bought an NVidia GT240 for $34 (after $30 rebate) from Fry's, which blows away the 9800 in my other machine. Just sayin. And I wouldn't put anything less than an I5 in any new system, and even that would be pushing it. The new machine I just bought has an I7 930 in it, and even that is sort of middle of the road now, compared to the cutting edge. (and no, the 240 is not for the new machine, it was to replace an old 8500 that was dying in yet another older machine. Yes, I have a lot of PC's ) But I could see building the machine in the OP's post, maybe for the kids or as an extra PC or something, it's certainly not a bad price.
The GT240 , even in gddr5 guise, is not faster than a 9800gt. You might be having driver issues or something. Even so, that is a fantastic price for one.
Yeah, could be. All I know is that the performance is better in my specific situation. And where the heck is the 9800 on that chart?? Anyway, the 9800 is on what is now my 2nd machine, the 8500 was on the old 2nd machine, now the 3rd, and I replaced the 8500 with the 240, and the performance using the same programs is light and day - not that the 9800 is bad by any means. But yeah I'm sure there are lots of variable between the two machines besides just the video cards. And sweet, the new machine I just got has the 260 in it, with 1.8gb on it, so far it seems to be pretty much smokin .
8800gt and 9800gt are identical except for the name on the box. The GT250 is identical to the 9800gtx fwiw. Apparently, Nvidia has been taking re-branding lessons from GM.
See that's what I get for not keeping on top of that mess, it has all exploded and losing track is too too easy.
Simple way to gauge Nvidia class to disregard the last digit and focus on the digit right after it. 8800>>240>>>>320 9600/240 is much better than the 8600. It's not the same as the 9800/8800 rebadge.
