The Yankees used to be at the bottom of the league in attendance - winning gets you attendance, losing does not. It's the same everywhere. Don't pretend you damn yankees are any better.
The first post was ok. Now this is starting to push it a little...I think you have gotten your point across. The main reason this team doesn't sell tickets is because they havent been to the playoffs in 5 years. The same happens with the Astros when they start losing. Thats the way it is and always will be most likely. Houston fans only want to see a winner...
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~brians/errors/begs.html Sorry, pet peeve of mine. (<-- I know. sentence fragment) Live and learn, carry on. (<-- yeah, yeah. run-on sentence) Please spread the word. I've even heard Rich and/or Charlie misuse this phrase. Rich? Charlie? Are you reading this?
Die Hard, relax. If you are so pissed at me, try to get your fellow mates to the Toyota Center more often. Or just enjoy being with Atlanta as the worst sports town in America. Pued, I am not a Yankees fan. I hate the Yankees. They can't lose enough for me. Same with the Mets. The Knicks. The Rangers. You been here a while. Haven't you seen any of my posts over the years practically urinating on each NY Team? My point is that Houston fans suck. Boston fans are better. So are 80 percent of the other sportstowns. By the way, no whiny posters yet. Or the complainers. I guess this thread was a waste of time. Didn't get the people I wanted in here.
My point is that the vast majority of fans are unrepentant bandwagon fans - if the most successful franchise in sports history can't consistently draw fans - well, people are the same everywhere.
I am not pissed at you. This is a very relevant thread. Pued is hitting it right on the head... Winning = good attendance Losing = poor attendance I personally, am an hour and a half away from Houston and I am a college student. I don't have the money to spend on tickets. The majority of fans are bandwagoners...they are the ones who fill up the seats...the team has to win for them to want to come. unless you have a new stadium with a retractable roof and a train that can keep the kids entertained.
Ok. I give. My motivation for posting this is because I come everyday to the BBS and its overloaded with negativity and bandwagon jumping. I know its normal to be on and off the bandwagon, but we are trading the team, the coach, the assistants, the mascot, the dancers and the ball boys. I have been saying the whole year, you GOT TO give this team some time. You want immediate results? So do I. I think that I have seen enough positive aspects of the Rocks to know that we have the right coach and the right system. Fast breaks don't win championships anymore. We have a dominant center to be. We need to build around him. I think upper management and Rudy are more to blame than anyone presently with the team. This is their team. Not Gundys. We need to give him time to fix this crappy situation and install mental and physical toughness ala the Spurs to some extent. He deserves blame. He is sometimes way too tough. But his methods work not only in basketball, but in most sports. But alas, my effort fail to draw the weak into a heated debate as to why they do the jumping off bridges and buildings. I go back to my more pacifying posts and remarks.
No kidding, A buddy of mine just called and he is a Metfan. We started talking about the game since I am a Bravesfan. What did he rub into my face the most? Empty seats even on opening day. Then he says Atlanta and Houston are the worst towns for sports. So I bring up the fact that he is pissed we took his beloved Gundy and what does he say? He will be gone next year because we are wimps and can't take his coaching style. Can't say squat. He might be right. But he is a loser so... By the way, looks like the Rocks gonna win tonight big. Glad to know Francis and the boys read my thread.
My feelings are hurt. Almu is just too tough on us. Actually, I live in West Texas. We have vegetation tougher than New Yorkers.
I can't even beleive I read this enitre thread. I don't post here all the time, but I read often. This is by far the most rediculous thread I have read on any BBS. Who cares if there is a sellout everynight. Sports in Houston have been on the rise in the last few years. We may not be the best sports fans in the country, but don't even think about calling us soft. Let put all the sports cities together in a royal rumble and I'll make a bet that Houston will be on top. Don't mess with Texas! What other state have you ever seen with a slogan like that. Don't mess with Massachusettes! Gimme a freakin break. If you wanna bash the fans you might as well bash yourself too. Just because you live in Houston doesn't mean that you can attend the games. Sure you live in NYC, but how many games do you attend? I'm sure not that many, and if you did live in H-town I'm sure you wouldn't attend many more. There are a lot of fans out there that would rather watch the game in the comfort of their own home rather than be around a bunch of idiots at the game that think they know everything. Just because people don't attend games doesn't make them a bad fan. I for one would rather watch the game at home most of the time. Sure I enjoy going to the games, but its also expensive for some to go to several games. I just can't afford to go to several games or even one game on certain occasions. I have mouths to feed, and bills to pay. Are you honestly going to tell me that I am a bad fan because I can't go to a freaking sports event? Get real.
If you'd said all that in the first place, you'd have gotten a far different reaction. Instead, you come in sounding like a carpet-bagger. But, if you're just trolling for a heated reaction, you got it. Just the wrong cross-section. (Btw moomoo, as for "begging the question," the logicians may want to keep it for themselves, but that's over now. It's been taken by the masses. It no longer connotes a logical argument. That's the nature of language -- it evolves according to its use. Instead of standing with a small band of defenders, I suggest you give in to the inevitable tide that will sweep away the original meaning of the idiom.)
Hmn. People need to take into account that we still owe Rudy all that money and won't fire a coach after one measly season.
I'm sorry guys and I hate to agree with him but, Houston have some of the most Fair-weathered fans on the 3rd rock from the sun. I've said this plenty of times on this site before. In MY opinion, H-Town has more bandwagon fans than any city I've visited and it's embarrassing because I was born a raised here. We don't support our teams during the rough times and act like "die hards" when they start doing something positive. It's messed up, but it's reality. I'm not calling anyone on this site...just stating my opinion. By the way.......I don't agree with everything Almu said. Must of it was Porch Monkey ****
almu, the problem is not with houston sports fans but with houstonians in general. civic-mindedness is a totally foreign concept. you are talking about changing a culture, not encouraging sports fans to attend more games. houston is vast and spread out, the most contact people have with one another is in a fender-bender. there just isn't the same kind of social contact that one finds in new york. people greet each other in texas like long lost relatives because they have learned this behavior. the number of interactions one has each day in new york is many, many times this and people react in more matter of fact ways. people are not rude, they are frank. it's not a matter of toughness but of culture and place. you should know better.
Yeah, teams like LA and San Antonio (laid back cities) just can't possibly hang with the big NY. I mean, can the Lakers really match NY's 2 championships?? They need to get the NY attitude!
Last I checked Van Gundy couldn't handle tha HEAT in NY either. Didn't he Bail on the team 12 or 15 games into the seaon? And don't give me 9/11 as an excuse. Peace.
