I want to hump hookers like there is no next year. Seriously, I might just stay home. and hump hookers like no next year.
I'll be makin' that money, not lettin' it make me! My band is opening up for the O'Jay's and the Pointer Sisters at the Downtown Hilton. NYE is great for musicians because you can jack your price up 4 fold. I wish every weekend was NYE, then I could quit my day job!
You aren't lying... I've always liked NYE and this year will be my best paying one yet. Between NYE and Christmas parties, it's been a great December. It's time to fatten up now, because January and February have always been slow times me.
I hear you. I have 12 gigs booked in December not counting a couple of church gigs. The money has been great. Too bad most of it is already spent. Can you say property taxes?
Let me just adjust this statement a bit... NYE is great for musicians who play in cover bands. For original bands, December is a HORRIBLE month for gigs. It is difficult if not impossible to get people out to shows and it is tough to get hired for New Year's unless you are REALLY popular because clubs want cover bands. All the people I know who play covers do clean up this time of year.
I never thought about that. I've always been in cover bands that had originals, but never really tried to get by on just originals. Now I'm doing the biggest 'sellout' thing that any musician can do. I honestly don't think that what I do can even be considered musical, even though I'm actually playing and singing. But, if it's not musical, I still have a bunch of fun.
Nothing yet. Maybe if macalu puts something together, and if he doesn't mind people from the BBS coming over.
We're heading up to St. Louis on Friday to see our friends from the cruise and their new baby. Will probably be pretty low-key since the baby's only three weeks old, but I'll at least get to a) gamble, b) have a slider or 8 c) get me some Steak n Shake, and d) wear my Astros gear.
I'm headed to Austin! I've done that the last 3 out of 4 years. Last year, I was in Santa Monica, CA preparing for the Rose Bowl.
Yeah, I've only done a cover band one time in my life and I really didn't care for it. It made music feel a little too much like work to me. But, you can make money doing it for sure and if you are having fun, that's great.
By the way, I'll be putting up flyers for my band's CD release party on New Year's Eve. What better time to do it? Everyone will be out at clubs.
I'll listen to Shadoe Stevens count down the top 100 songs of 1991 on American Top 40, take a break from that to watch the Rockets game, then finish up the countdown, watch Dick Clark's return to the airwaves, make a toast or two and then hit the sack.
i was supposed to be heading to boulder, co to see a 3 night run of the drive-by truckers (29th, 30th, 31st), but that had to get nixed due to my new job in austin. so now it's between staying in austin or heading back to houston to watch a friend of mine play (the Paul Eason Band) at the firehouse with honeybrowne.
Rudyard's Pub. JW Americana (best rock band in Houston) Texas Guinness Lovers (first gig in about six years) Churchbus (from Chicago, with Kilian Sweeney from de Schmog & TGL)
I'm going to a lame party that I feel obligated to go to. I wish I could go to Rudyards to see JW but I would have to drive back (drunk) to Clear Lake.
I'm still looking for something to do. I remember back on New Years Eve for Y2K they shut down the streets downtown and had a big party. Even turned Verizon Theatre into a club. I wish they still did something like that.
