Problem is he is a rookie. JVG went off about Deke and the finger wag last season or the year before, but as we can see, it didn't make any difference. Deke still does it and JVG shut up about it, becuase it ain't that big a deal. It's Deke's signature and it would be stupid to force him to stop it. On the other hand, VSpan is a rookie. I hope JVG isn't too rough on him for the Showtime turnovers.
I think the reason is that JVG was a PG in college, who played within himself and maximized his potential. When he sees V-Span he probably wants to tone his game down quite a bit to be a PG who is more safe than creative. I think JVG would have had problems with Steve Nash, or Manu Ginobli, players that are creative to a fault, yes you are going to have turnovers, but you are going to energize your team and make some dazzling plays too. JVG would rather win with an Avery Johnson, and V-Span is WAY more creative than that. FREE - V !! DD
I have to ask, do you just make this stuff up? Rookie Year Ast/TO: Ginobili: 2.0/1.4 in 20.7 min. Nash: 2.1/1 in 10.5 min. V-Span: 0.7/1.1 in 10.8 min. Billy has major turnover issues that need to be adressed. How can you compare him to Nash? Ginobili's TO numbers are slightly worse, but nowhere near Billy's. Basketball is a lot more than "dazzling plays." A flawless, deliberate attack is more dangerous than a wild, "dazzling" one. V-Span definitely has a big upside to him, but he really needs to reduce the turnovers. A <1 Ast/TO ratio is not something to brush under the rug like you seem to advocate JVG do.
I agree with you on VSpan's TO problems and low A/TO ratio, and that comparing VSpan to Nash and Ginobili at this point is a bit ridiculous, but I don't see DD make any stuff up in his post, which was basically all opinion. Making stuff up is a cardinal offense IMO, you need to be a little careful with your accusation.
Whew, good to know. For a second there I thought his assessment of JVG's college playing career wasn't based on all those Menlo Junior College men's B-ball games that are always on ESPN classic all the time and just fabricated - or fabricating that guys like Steve Nash and Ginobili commit an inordinate amount of turnovers.
Bill also wrote in his blog that in his very little free time, he goes to drink a cofee with some friends or he goes for food with Novak and Battier, with which he makes more company. Sorry for my English, If I make any mistakes, I hope you understand what I wrote.
There's a difference between an opinion based on facts and one based on... well... nothing. Hence the "making stuff up" comment.
I don't even know why Steve Nash is in the conversation. The guy barely played for a mediocre Phoenix team that went 40-42 as a rookie. He didn't play a whole lot in his second season either Then phoenix traded him and he was regarded as a bust, he really didn't start to come into his own until seasons 3-5, and finally was playing at all-star level during his sixth season. If you want to follow his model of development, then Spanoulis shoudl get to the bench.
Well I guess, as the semantics goes, one makes up one's mind, but one usually doesn't make up one's opinion.
Fact- JVG was a PG in college. The bit about V-Span being like Nash or Ginobli is his court vision, creativity and playmaking. Not saying he is going to be as successful just that he has a little of that in him, probably more than JVG is comfortable having on the court. And V-Span had one game with 5 turnovers...ONE.....and THREE of them happened after the team was up by 30 points and he was having fun (as evidenced by what he posted in his OWN blog). JVG is a control freak, and IMHO, that is not the makeup of a coach that will adapt well to the changes of the game while it is happening. I think....yes...THINK...that V-Span is too risky for JVG right now, and that JVG is more concerned about his contract and views playing V-Span as a risk. Is it true? I don't know, but it seems to explain what is going on with JVG and his inability to play a guy who has played well in professional leagues and on the international level for years. Does it mean he is ready to start? No, but at least get him some quality time and if he screws up...pull him....but don't get pissed off in a 28 point victory because a guy threw a behind the back pass when we were up 30 points...that is just STUPID ! DD
Curious as to why V-Span never addresses the facts that he can't shoot, play consistent D, stop turning over the ball or make erratic passes? Could it be because these are not things he learned in America? This guy is so mediocre and once again everytime you guys jump on a bandwagon, it makes me weary of any of your analysis. Between V-Span and Novak why are we posting cheerleader pictures for you guys? Superimpose a crew cut and some hair on the girls and get it over with. The rest of us will drool over a better looking and better player like Sue Bird, thats sad!
He certainly can not shoot well from the outside, but his D has been great, and his passing was off in ONE game....ONE !!! He needs seasoning, those of us asking for it, are not concerned that he makes mistakes, we are concerned that if he doesnt' get court time, he will make the mistakes next year or the year after when he does.....he needs to be learning NOW, before Tmac loses all his abilities.... 3 year window......win now, V-SPan is a piece of that puzzle.
One more question: why come up with this wild fantasy about JVG and his JuCo PG complex? Aren't V-Span's turnovers enough of a reason for JVG to limit his minutes? I guess not. Your arguments are pure speculation and absolutely no substance. Your posts ooze anti-JVG bias. 12-6.
Fact - you have no idea how he played in college. Considering that he was never half the playmaker they were in College or Europe respectively, let me take a wild guess and you're playing "If he's a euro, he must be X!" wild card. Uh, JVG let's the former "Skip to my Lou" play 40 minutes a night - yeah he only wants uncreative players In case you didn't know, the team needs a backup (and starting PG) BADLY. In his audition for the role, Spanoulis plays like ass and decides to have fun. Tell me why he doesn't deserve criticism for this? Let's look at another example. Spanoulis had a good game his second game, JVG was effusive with praise. See? easy. Play smart and well - reward. Play dumb and bad - punishment. Shocking, what a slave driver that JVG is for employing such a CRAZY system.... Your opinions on JVG have been proven so wrong, so repeatedly over the years that we could construct a "Classic Moments" database solely out of them. Or....MAYBE....he's trying to make him into a better player instead of one who creates chances - for the other team. Umm, he IS playing him, EARLY, in his rookie season. That's why we're having this conversation, you ninny. BTW, you need to look up his old stats. It's not like he was scoring a zillion points a game or dropping 10 assists. The guy was a second round pick for a reason. What is STUPID is if you think that coaches being critical of players who make mistakes doesn't happen. Apparently you do.
Why should V-Span get to keep playing through these mistakes when half the players in this league wouldn't get that luxury? Put his ass in the NBDL where it belongs and give someones who is more prepared a chance! Even JVG's juco coach knew when a guy is earning a chance and when a guy thinks he is entitled to a chance....if he doesn't work hard in practice than he should be playing 1 on 1 with Bonzi in JVGs driveway, not in his rotation. VSpan should be making his case in practice not in his blogs or on his summer track record......repeat after me..."MAN UP V-SPAN!"
