I've read every book in the series at least 3 times and some many more than that. Patrick O'Brien is one of the greatest historical authors ever. The character development, the adventure and political intrigue, and the fascinating detail in the RN are all fantastic, but even more so is his ear for dialog. The books can be hard to get used to at first, but as the series goes on, you'll find yourself laughing and smiling at so many conversations, whether between the Lord Admiral and his mistress, or two able seamen... I could go on alllllll day about how much I love these books. It makes me happy just thinking about it. I might have to stop at the bookstore on the way home (such is the love of the series in my family that my brother absconded with 7 or 8 of my copies last Christmas).
Incidentally, that's the subtitle of the movie. My father has been telling me to read the books, but I haven't. I'd watch the movie to get the gist of it but I hate Russell Crowe. I am interested to see Last Samurai. And, I feel compelled by my heritage to see The Alamo, though I don't think I'll like it. The historical reproduction looks good, but I get the feeling it one of those 'courage movies' (chick-flicks for guys).
I trust Peter Weir to have made a very good movie, even though the previews don't make it look like a movie I'd normally be all that interested in seeing. So, I'll check it out.
Ah, so that's the name of the movie I've been referring to as "Russel Crowe On A Boat." Doesn't look interesting to me. LOTR, Last Samurai and Troy on the other hand...
"Oh my god, it's Russel Crowe" "Oy, don't you interupt my soliloquy!" "Tugga!" Damn, I love South Park.
Two questions for you, bama: 1. What are you smoking? 2. Why aren't you sharing it with the rest of us???
I felt the same way after seeing the previews but the reviews coming in are amazing. Looks like it will be up for Best Picture of the Year. Man, Russell Crow knows how to pick'em. http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808405079&cf=critic
Yeah, that is a good sign I guess. I just can't stand Russell Crowe. I don't get all the hoopla, especially since I believe that Gladiator is hands down the most overrated movie ever. I'll end up seeing it if it gets nominated though.
Gladiator was definitely no Braveheart. I do like Crowe, though, and, as much as I'd like to think of him as a bad actor, he simply isn't. He did nail the part in Gladiator and he arguably should have won anyway for The Insider and A Beautiful Mind. Plus, it's getting good reviews. Anybody who actually thinks Troy will be better has got to be joking. I have the advantage of having read the script for Troy already and I literally almost quite my job and started writing movie scripts on the spot it was so cheesy. And the preview with the 4,000 ships in the ocean - maybe it is accurate, but it just seems impossible - there is no way you can have that many ships at that time period in that proximity from each other.
I always saw the previews of Master and Commander and hoped it would be a good movie...but it looked like one of those films that could so easily turn out to be action crap. The reviews coming in are getting me semi-excited.
If it's about Napoleon won't it be hard to root for him? It sounds like a good movie. But how do you root for the anti-christ. People have trouble rooting for a flawed character. Just like people had trouble rooting for the guy he was trying to save in the meg ryan movie a while back.
Crowe rocked in Gladiator. He showed his range in beautiful Mind. I'm sure this one should be great as well. As for Last Samuri, they don't speak english today much less 150 years ago in Japan by some hillbilly samuri trying to get the best out of Tom Cruise. Then again, I wouldn't want to read subtitles, so carry on.
Master and Commander was the title of the first in a series of Patrick O'Brian novels about the adventures of Captain Aubrey and his friend Dr. Maturin. The Far Side of The World is indeed the 10th in the series, but to reades the entire series became known as either the Aubrey/Maturin novels, or the Master and Commander series, hence the rather awkward movie title. They are exceptional historical novels. For fans of the series, an interesting discussion might focus on why they chose the 10th book to film first.
Man i still havnt seen the movie ima ahve to go tonight im stuck at the store cus the gay employee didnt show up
Those gay employees always ruin it for those of us that are straight and like ship movies. When he gets in, make sure to ask him if he thinks women and seamen mix.
