I'm not being critical here, as a matter of fact I kinda liked him in the open practice...
But, did he come with some 97.9 radio-plugging in mind?

So, I guess this is permanant.

However, I wasn't critical of him during the player intros (mostly because we didn't hear the player intros on TV)... I was critical of just how unprofessional he sounded during the game, making foul calls and pronouncing player's names.

Also, no matter how much treble he had in his voice last night, it won't sound anywhere as good as Mario's or Matt's did... that's a given.

And, even though it was his first game and all, I don't remember these "growing pains" when Mario took over.

I guess my last question is... why was Mario let go in the first place?

    Tim,

Why can't you guys just turn all off court (and coaching, player personnel, concessions, maketing, um...cheerleading, everything) over to Bullard. Let him PA and do the pre and post game as well. Radio and color, tv too. Then let us sit back and start counting rings.

    Chance

BTW - the be big song rocks you just don't know it;)

There were tryouts? Extensive? When Mario Nani was selected, it was in the form of a public competition and in front of ROX fans. The main judge was Matt Thomas.

By the way, does anyone know what happened to Matt Thomas? He needs to come back and bring back that ROX voice we all loved. Cynthia Cooper and T.Grey for Lisa Malosky and Mario Nani......I dont like this new direction so far. Ill probably grow on it though

Matt did try out. We aren't ignorant of the past. Matt is still a friend of the organization.

He had to withdraw before we made our final decision due to other commitments with his regular job, though.

You actually made him try out?? Did his voice change from when he was the best PA announcer in the league? I guess he couldn't take the job anyways.

Also, regardless of T Grey's ad-lib ability, isn't the most important facet of a PA announcer his articularity, the sound of his voice, and his awareness of game situations (for voice inflections, and pumping up the crowd). Experience is also a plus (I'm guessing this is T Grey's first PA gig... and its at the PRO level... rather than college or HS).

If the MAIN reason for hiring T Grey was for his ad-libbing ability during the crazy promos, couldn't he just be hired for that?

Leave the game announcing to somebody with a good voice.

I too was embarrased when listening to the game. Hopefully this guy will tone it down some and try not to be such a cheerleader. Either that or I will have to start watching the home games on mute.

If it isn't broken, don't repair it.

I really liked Mario Nani. This is a completely pointless move by the Rockets. Why?

I know T-Grey.. I once worked for the Box.. he given me my Jock name.. Very Cool Dude.. He left the Box over the Summer to work for Music World ENT. ( Destiny Child). Went on a Europe Tour with Kelly Rowland.. as a DJ.. I talk to him about a month ago.. He's back on the box part time ( Mostly Weekends) but he told me that Music World Screwed him and now he's looking for another Gig I guess it was the PA thing.. But he screwed him self. when he left that 2-6 gig at the Box.. I wish him all the luck though..

Oh well, guess I will have to bring my RADIO to the game and turn it up REAL LOUD so that I can hear Gene Peterson instead of some reject from the freaking radio.
I do agree with Tim on one thing, give this guy a chance, BUT ONLY the pre-season home games. If he still sucks, (i.e. unless some miracle happens) cut his ass and get a REAL announcer. We shouldn't have to let this hack do the PA a whole season to know that he is terrible for the game environment.
Why do I always have to feel like the stuff in Houston is cut rate, second class, bottom of the barrel stuff when it comes to the extras for our sports teams? Am I not mistaken or is the Toyota Center not a high dollar arena? Are we not a prominent market? Are we not an international basketball presence especially now with Yao Ming? Why do we need to resort to local reject disc jocks for a PA? That is WEAK.

In radio announcers super fast car commercial voice:
The preceding was just my opinion. It doesn't mean that Rockets management actually gives a rat's ass what I think and that things will change no matter how much I scream, butch, moan, and/or wail. Prices plus TT&L. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. For contest rules go ask somebody who knows what time it is. Thank you for your time. Good day.

Tim, fan reaction have been overwhelmingly negative. Please reconsider.

Uh, no. We had an incredible PA announcer before, that was professional and *appropriate*. Now we have some clown from a radio station that is turning a respectable environment into a pickup game atmosphere. Trash.

Who was this guy's competition? Scooby Doo?

Uh.... this has nothing to do with the outrage you see in posters' opinions of this clown. The problem is a lack of professionalism. The problem is creating the wrong atmosphere at the game. The problem is having an amateur on the mic thinking that it's time for in-game shout-outs to players. I can just picture it now after a Francis dunk, "Stevie Franchise with the mad skillz, give it up h-town for my playuh pimp, Stevie!" Is this the NBA? NO.

Uh... Tim, the player intros is when the entire arena and fans watching on tv are focused on the announcer. It is the most important part of the job. I do not understand how you can downplay this. 'Helping along on-court contests' is IRRELEVANT. It is not the role of the PA announcer, it is the role of the FANS. This is just bush league.

I strongly disagree with the decisions that have been made by Rockets' marketing.

    T-Grey can be hilarious.

Did you guys remember how quiet and lame games at the Compaq center were? Never mind that we were losing, but still.
It was pathetic at the LAPTOP. There was no crowd participation because everyone was listening to the radio!
I was embarrassed to be at games yelling for the Rockets only
to have fellow Houstonians WONDER why I was cheering.

Get into the game for gawd's sakes!!!!!

And by the way...the last PA announcer Mario was lame.

And all this "streetball" and "bring Bullard in" crap has got to go. Undercurrent of racism?

Give Tgrey a chance. The people who hate on Calvin Murphy, probably arel hating on TGrey.

I just want to bump this back up to give the guy his props. I was at the game tonight and the PA announcer was NOT annoying. I guess they told him to turn it down. Not once did he chant "de-fense" or anything else.

I thought he did a good job.
