I didn't know it was Matt Thomas doing them back then, but that guy was incredible, maybe the best in the NBA. I remembering wondering at the time why in the hell he was replaced by Mario Nanni who I found awful. I always liked the Suns' guy back during their Barkley-KJ era and the Bulls' guy was also great during the Jordan years. Is there any way we can bring Matt back?
Yea... Matt sounds totally different on radio... but then again he's not speaking in a booming voice into an arena full of screaming fans. He was the best. Hey... the Bulls guy (Ray Clay) got fired a couple of years ago for giving Michael Jordan that long-winded intro when he first came back with the Wizards. (not a classy move at all) Anyways, maybe we can get him if this guy is indeed temporary.
The P.A. Announcer is T. Grey from 97.9fm The Boxx "a black radio station" to you white people... j/k
Fuh-get it. They will say this is also a "Cynthia Cooper" tryout... gimme a break... I loved the way Mario used to do "RRRRRRRROCKETS BALLLLLL...!!!" After an opposing team's turnover. RUDY, please come back. LISA, please come back. MARIO, please come back.
Why don't we just get the 'And-One' team's announcer if we are after the streetball crowd? In fact, why don't we all just run on the court after a slamdunk and hoop and holla'? Let's throw out all the traveling violations and reward players for bouncing the ball off defenders' foreheads. Sigh. Last I checked, streetballers didn't represent the type of fan that *attends* Rockets games. Yet another Rockets' marketing FAILURE.
that hurts... i went to many many rockets games with my friends, and yes many of them are *street ballers* . T sounds aite on radio, but who let him get it to is head that he was all great and almighty, the guy sounds like P WEE HERMAN....
I agree. I never liked Nanni. Thomas was, indeed, the greatest. I shed some tears when his era ended.
Wow, he must have really been bad. Even the Houston Chronicle made fun of him. "cheerleader" I would love to have Lisa do the interviews at halftime....Lisa G. that is. ....ok..ok. I would also rather have Lisa M.
I noticed on particular chant, when you could hear him plain as day (TV).......I was less than impressed. I thought someone had snuck into the the mic, it had to have been a fluke. I guess not. No wonder the Rockets played so bad. They were backed by an annoying "cheerleader".
What do you mean about streetball crowd? How is this even related to the announcer? Do you say this because he is a DJ on 97.9?
He always take shots at blacks without saying "blacks". He's just being true to form. But if T sux then he sux.
I am pretty good friends with Mario and the dude was really disappointed that they let him go. He said that they told him that they wanted to go in a new direction. And from most of the posts on here it looks like they went down.
A new direction?!? First of all, how can changing the PA announcer be a "new direction" decision. Second of all, if this new guy is indeed temporary, how could they get rid of somebody without having his replacement in mind. Are they just saving him for opening night? Hell... are the Rockets in general saving their good play for opening night? The Rockets organization seems in dissaray...
The rocks pa announcer sucks. I wasnt a big fan of mario nani, but this new scrub makes mario nani sound like the voice of god.
Your explanation of where this Trader Jorge guy is coming from definately clears things up. I am surprised that they even chose T to announce the games to be honest.
Now that's scary: I went to search how Nanni's last name is really spelled (because I was bored) and I found his phone number and home address. I wonder what his voice mail is like.
1. T. Grey is the new PA. 2. Give him a break -- it's his first game. 3. We had extensive tryouts. 4. We're still working out the sound balance ... we had way too much treble in his mic last night. 5. Don't judge a PA just by how well he booms out the player intros. That's only part of the job. Interacting with the audience is important. Helping along on-court contests is important. Being able to ad lib is important. He'll get a feel for the right balance of helping the crowd along and pushing for too much -- that comes with experience. Tim
