Currently it does not play any PS2 games. They may add software emulation in the future, but if you want to play PS2 games on your PS3 now you have to spend a little more for either a 60GB or 80GB unit.
From a Gamespot article today: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6182193.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;0
here is the clear and simple breakdown: 40gig - $399, *no BC whatsoever* 60gig - $499, has full hardware BC...however it is being phased out and no new manufactured units 80gig - $499, software emulation BC...not as good as hardware of course, there are notable issues with a good percentage of games
I read on some forums some retailers are selling the 60gig for $499 + free controller or game + remote.
Yeah, I saw it...technically on Wednesday, prior to it being released on the PSN (though that was when I got to see the HD version). The graphics are impressive as always, but I did like seeing some of the new environments, as well as the subtle hints about parts of the story that Naughty Dog hasn't told us about yet. Not sure if you guys saw this, but I believe a demo for Uncharted will be available in next week's update. For those of you who haven't seen it, this is the trailer we're talking about: <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=27290"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=27290" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object>
I guess I missed it, but did anyone else see a commercial for Assassin's Creed that was promoted along with the $399 PS3 (making it seem like it was a PS3 exclusive)? I believe it was during the Colts-Patriots game, and it might have aired at other times as well on other channels. I think they've also done something like this with The Simpson's Game. Sony hasn't really bothered with ads like these for previous multiplatform games (think they might have done it with Spiderman 3, but that's all I can remember), so it is somewhat interesting to see them change their approach on things here (especially with a major game like AC). I've already seen the commercial in the OP (the full 60 second version) a couple times, including during the Colts-Patriots game, and I don't really watch much TV (usually watch just Cowboys/NFL games, or the occasional Rockets game if they are playing on national TV). Seems like Sony really is pushing this ad campaign pretty hard. Of course, when I read on Sony's blog that they'll be pushing a new ad campaign, it is probably easy to think that this is true after watching only a few ads.
I saw the Simpsons one. What was interesting was that it only had the PS3 logo attached, and showed only Playstation versions. Reminds me of Madden in that you would see a lot of ads with just 360 latched on to the end, despite these games being multiplatform. I think the new ads are pretty effective. Interesting to see them approach it more directly. It's a mystery to me why they didn't do that sooner.
My PS3 switches back to 720 when I play 2K8. It starts at 1080 but then goes blank for a bit then plays at 720. I have a Sony HD w/ HDMI. The game says it will play at 1080. Any help?
Yeah, I saw that too. I think I saw 2 versions of that commercial, if I'm not mistaken (one with Krusty, and one with Homer and Bart IIRC). Apparently, there's also a 3rd version of the commercial, which only has the PS3: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jQaX1lJF7EY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jQaX1lJF7EY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Yeah, it does remind me a bit of that. I guess one (big?) difference would be that it would probably be easier to mislead people into thinking Assassin's Creed (something like it) wasn't multiplatform vs something like Madden. Going along with what chow_yun_fat posted, I can understand why perhaps they didn't put a lot of effort into marketing (for the first 4-5 months anyway, while they were still working on making the system widely available). For what they wanted, the ads probably got the job done, especially since they probably couldn't have made an ad anywhere near as effective as these recent ones during that time period.
Your TV changes to the resolution that the game was designed for. I'm guessing 2K was designed for 720. Don't uncheck it as a resolution. You will find a lot of games use 720. One advantage is that is uses progressive scanning as oppose to interlace (like 1080i). There there is 1080p but a small % of HD owners have that resolution.
