I'm not sure about NOLA, but I agree with Fredericksburg...I've stayed there and it is nice and quiet and romantic...
This B&B rocks in Taos: The American Artists Gallery House It's minutes from the town square and restaurants and about 15 minutes from the ski valley. My wife and I went last winter and didn't really ski. Plenty of restaurants and shops and gallery's to check out. The B&B itself has New Mexico style fireplaces, huge jacuzzi tubs that sit up overlooking the fireplace, and well laid out rooms. There is a main house open to guests all the time with drinks, a computer etc (also where meals are served), the owners house, and then several cottages all secure in the same compound. The couple who run it are great!
Just got back from NO a couple weeks ago. To be completely honest, I would highly suggest you go somewhere else. NO is okay during the day with all the shops, Cafe Du Monde, sight seeing, etc...but I didn't want to step a foot on any of the streets at night. Many of the buildings are still boarded up and while I have never been to NO before that, the place is quite dirty thus not all that romantic IMO.
No problem. The funny part is that we were camping in Caprock Canyon in the Panhandle but all those bad fires broke out at the same time, so you couldn't have a fire (and it was &%$*$#^ cold!)! I said 'let's just drive to Taos.' I made the reservation on the road sight unseen and knew I'd catch hell if it was a dump but luckily it was totally sweet. The couple who run the B&B also give you the complete lowdown on where to eat etc in the area.
